View Full Version : It's back
Alright new mobo/chip/video card in this computer, and i think its all coming back. I started getting random blue screens booting up today.. so i figured i'd update windows. REalized i didn't have service pack 1 installed so i did that.. and well that just made it worse. Now i get the error: "Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078." This was the error i got when my comp just stopped working for me last week... I tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers... same deal.
WTF is going on. This comp will be the end of me.
HEHE this is funny. Now windows won't let me install any of the other updates. This is FUN!
How do i system restore... i think that may help/

System Restore?
Like, XP rollback, or go back to your original setup with Windows?
If XP rollback someone else will have to answer.
If you want to go back to your original setup, insert your restore disk and follow the instructions. If it's not an OEM system (Dell, Compaq, Gateway, etc.) then just insert your Windows disc and do a fresh/clean install.

Have you tried Windows installation in "Restore" mode - WinXP or Win2000?
Edit - Er, uh, I meant "Repair" mode. Mmonnin talks about in his post below.

XP and ME.
Do a repair install of XP. Insert your XP CD and go all the way past the license agreement and all that to install XP. There is a repair console when files are being copied, its not that one. There is an option to repair again, not that one. Its the last one. Go as far as you can til you have to install fresh and partition. Its right there.

Also try the "Last known good configuration" option from the F8 boot menu.

Dude, 9/10 times bluescreens are from borked hardware. I hate to say it, but there's a chance that you may have some broken hardware again.

I had bluescreens all the time with my P3 machines when I had ME. I have the same machine now upgraded to XP and its fine. Actually went from XP down to 2k. Sometimes it just crappy software.

I'm trying to do the thing that mmonin suggested... but its not letting me get into windows setup. Won't let me into BIOS settings so i can set the comp to boot to cdrom... err.

Yes. Why DO you have ECC?
That alone could be causing problems.
