Too close to call ( pics )

Well there is nothing more to do here with the hurricane, so since my psu was about to bork on me, I took it out, slapped in my antec and hooked everything back up. About 25 minutes ago, I went to put the side onto my case, and :sad2: my fan on my h/s was not moving, I then shut my pc down, and smelt a burning smell from the h/s. I waited about 5 minutes, wrapped my hand with a shirt and took off the scorching hot h/s and fan. My cpu ( 1700+ ) has some burn marks near the die but that is it so far.

I then ran to the parts bin, took out my slk-800 and put a Thermaltake smart fan on it, with some asIII put it on my what I thought was fuxored cpu. It boots and works fine, but my cpu temp is running at 42c.

I'm really suprised that my cpu wasn't toast :respect: as because I do not know how long it was running with no hs/f over it. So far my psu went up, my fan on my hs, it is now time to get on new egg and finish ordering my parts for my new build, no more close calls for me.

I knew a guy that ran a 1.4 T-Bird with a retail (coolermaster) aluminum heatsink with a dead fan for three months. The system was unstable as hell, but it ran just fine, even with a burning hot heatsink. Say what you will about the Athlons, but they're tough little buggers.

How can you say, IN THE SAME SENTENCE nonetheless, that something ran just fine, but yet was unstable as heck? That makes about as much sense as saying melted ice cream is nice and firm.

I would guess "ran fine" meaning that it didn't die ;)

You took the words out of my mouth. I was wondering the same but knowing Geeky, im sure he meant "it didnt die" or something in the line of that.

To the topic again. Older Athlons where a lot tougher and could take more heat, but its core where a lot more sensitive with snapped sides of the core etc. Fortunatly, the Xp´s and Barton´s putted the shim-makers out of their misery. It was the PC-worlds worst invention evar.

I'm still looking for the cpu to go out soon, glad I have a new 1700+ JIUHB sitting in my parts section, in case things go downhill though. But so far it's been running stable, no slow downs are any thing like that, and a big plus is no more burning smell :)

Hey Clutch, is that old heatsink the TMD kind? I just bought a TMD fan and I hope it doesn't have the same fate!

By the looks of things, it's the Vantec Aeroflow... from the shape of the base anyways.

Yes it is a Vantec Aeroflow, it was the ys tech fan that came with it that went out on me.

About 5 minutes ago, I got to lay my good ol 1700+ down, she totally went out. Luckily I had my new JIUHB I mentioned, so she wasnt down too long :) but still once my new rig is built this one will become my server, and I will have to order a new cpu for it, oh well you live and learn.

A similar thing happened with that 2100+ I burned out, except the thing wouldn't boot afterwards at all, and I can't figure out why it fried.

On second thought, it's not really similar at all...

Mack, you're beginning to scare me... you're starting to predict what I'm going to say.

What I mean by "ran fine" is that it was useable, and that it didn't die, but that the owner of said system was constantly complaining about how unstable it was....

Clutch, now you see why I insist on getting premium hsf's for my rigs, like the MCX462 and the SLK800. That way, if the fan bites the big one, I still have a decent chance of the proc surviving just from the ventilation in my case. That new MCX462+V that Swiftech just came out with really looks like it might even be able to outperform the SLK800, since they spread out the pins on it so that you will get better airflow through the heatsink. The only problem with it is that it costs $50.:eek3:

BTW, what Antec psu did you throw in your case? I just got in my True Control 550 today and I will be putting it in my nforce2 rig tonight.
