anyway, if anyone here besides me plays the guitar, help me decide which to get! im stuck between those 3. i have a strat right now, but it has 3 single coil pickups, and i really want humbuckers for that crunchy rock sound

I love playing, although I don't play nearly enough. I'm a noob though, just picked it up in February. Bought myself one of those cheap $100 acoustic kits that come with a bag, picks and extra strings, also bought guitar for dummies and now I know a bunch of chords, learning some chromatic scales and stuff like that, hoping I'll be the next Hendryx some day ;D

Hey, well at least you play. Playing the guitar is my 2nd favorite hobby, and along with almost everyone here, messing with computers is my favorite.

I play bass, but I find myself picking up the guitar every once in a while :D I bought my kids a Squire (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10323) last year and I find myself dabbling with that. I also play around with my wife's acoustic Takamine.

But I am and always will be a bass man :D

Ahh yes.. a guitar thread :D

I wouldn't recommend any of those guitars.. for the same money you can get a beautiful ESP/LTD KH-203.

Ignore the Kirk Hammett signature part. This is a very high quality instrument with a great set of pups (pickups) and a much higher quality build standard than the generic Epiphone guitars :)

I have 5 guitars currently... Dean Dime-O-Flame Dimebag ML, 2 x ESP/LTD H207 (1 flame red, 1 flame green) 7 string guitars, Jackson SC1 Surfcaster & Peavey Tracer :)

Actionally i saw that guitar (the kirk hammett one) this morning while i was browsing, and I really like it. Im going out to a guitar center thats near my house to check out some of those guitars.

Im thinking about spending the extra $300-4000 from the epiphone SG, to the gibson SG because im going to have it throughout college and i need something thats tough and isnt going to give me any problems. you know how it is being a broke college kid. ;D

o yea, do you guys think the ephiphone zakk wylde would be worth the $750. Theres no way im going to spend $3000 on the gibson version.

If you're wanting a really crunchy sound then I'd suggest going with anything BUT another Strat or Tele, they have a long (25.5") scale that means you're twisting your strings tighter to reach the same note as a shorter scale guitar and for crunch a slightly sloppier string will give more grunt on lower note power chords than a tighter string will.

I've had guitars running the gamut from a humbucking Strat with Floyd Rose trem, to a single coil equipped Tele to a very nice J.B. Player PRS replica with a roller nut, locking tuners and a Kahler bridge (kinfe edge trem unit) and dual Duncan PAF replicas and while my F.R. Strat (with a full EMG setup I installed myself) was an awesome sounding rig the J.B. Player with it's shorter 25" scale had a much more satisfying lower end grind than I was ever able to get out of the Strat.

My overall favorite axe though was a Guild X79 which was a solid body unit they made for a few years, it had a 2 octave neck with ebony fretboard, 24.75" scale and a pair of the hotest pickups I've ever seen installed from the factory on any guitar and while I was playing I've owned at least 45 different insturments.

Anyways, me personally I'd go with the Les Paul, I'm a sucker for a carved top and set neck plus the playability is simply astounding.

To tell you guys the truth, ive only played 1 les paul ever and i loved it. It was also the cheaper epiphone version, but it was still very nice. Im going out to guitar center in a few hours to test out a bunch of guitars. I plan on getting one by the end of this week hopefully. I want to get a crunchier, rock/metal sound, and my strat just isnt delivering it, even with upgraded humbucker and pickups, AND a boss ds-1 distortion pedal, which i might add is awsome.

I do honestly think you should stay away from the Epiphone & cheap fenders.. they just don't cut it against similarly Ibanez & ESP/LTD guitars :)

Go into the guitar place and play a few different models. Find one that is comfortable for you and that will work for you :)

The only fenders that I like are the American series strats, which also start of at like $1300. All of the lower model strats have cheap pickups and arent very good. My friend has a classic american series strat, and its one of my favorite guitars ive ever played, and ive played alot of different guitars (except for les pauls).

I don;t play a lot anymore, life kinda got in the way. I owned a Yamaha electric and thought it handled nice...I put through a borrowed Zoom effects box into a $25 amp and I liked the sound, but I would still say to have a look at the Yamaha line.

If you are thinking of the cash to get a real Gibson Les Paul, try looking at Paul Reed Smith...When I get serious money for a toy, I will definitely put a Les Paul and PRS at the top.

I'd love a real gibson les paul, but theres no way im gonna spend like $1500 on a guitar. the sad thing is that id easily spend that on a pc ;D

I don't share the same sentiment as everyone else with the Ephiphones. Stock they don't compare (but neither does the price) but putting in your own electronics (even the stuff in whatever your buying) makes for an almost exact replica of a standard Gibson. Several of my friends have done that (2 of which are in a band I piddle with) and it sounds great, plays great, everything. I also have no problem with Standard Fenders. It's the same deal, if you put your own pick-ups in, you're going to get the same sound (or very very similar) for next to nothing compared to the $1000 price tag you're looking at for Americans. I've noticed it's not like it used to be, with Standard Fender guitars being cheap, cheap, cheap. But as is, they're great for the price, and putting in your own pick-ups isn't a tough ordeal or pricey.

I guess what I'm saying is, it's nice to own those more expensive guitars, but the only thing you can't change about them is the general wood make-up, and it's still not bad for most of the Standards, they're made out of some decent materials, and I'd suggest to anyone to just gut their own cheap one and put in whatever pick-ups they like...unless you're saving up for a Rickenbacker 360 like me...then...well yea.

Edit: Oh, I missed the part about looking for more crunch. I'd personally go for the Les Paul (anyone who makes a replica or otherwise), even the Epiphone, now that he actually applies his name-sake to the things, they're not nearly as bad. You might also want to look into the Gibson SG or similar models (I do believe Shorty suggested one), from every one I've played they're beautiful and play a wide range of sound.

i love gibson SG's. Two of my friends have them. Well one has a Gibson SG, and hte other has an Epiphone SG, and i can barely tell a difference between the sound in both. you have to sit down and play a few scales with both guitars at the same time, and even then it is still tough to tell the difference.

Personally, if you paying $500 for any guitar (epiphone in this case) its going to have a pretty good sound to it.

I should add that I am going to definitely look into a hollowbody, of indeterminate make right now- my fav guitarist (Trey Anastasio) plays a custom-made hollowbody, and the tone is superb. You may want to try one of these yourself...

Ok, You DONT need a stupid les paul to get a "Crunchy" sound. I hate that. I've been playing my fender strat for over 12 years, I play every style from classical to death metal, all you need is a better distortion pedal and a good EQ setup. If you like crunch, crank your mids and use the middle and bridge picks at once. Turn the tone knob down for the middle pickup, turn your highs to about 7, bass to 5, and mids to 10 on your amp. Get a boss distortion pedal, I prefer the Boss Metal Zone, has an onboard EQ Setup and some of the best sounding distortion out there. I would tell you my EQ settings....... But then I'd have to kill you.....

I have a friend who plays a Fat Strat and a Jag Stang. They both have decidedly different tones than a Les Paul or SG. I wouldn't call it twangy, but they definitely don't have that...sound...that a humbucker makes (Although the Fat does have a bridge humbucker). If he really wants metal crunch, get a Jackson and the pedal you suggested.
