I've always enjoyed bowling, I was in a league when I was much younger and my team generally was pretty decent and we ended up in 2nd place for a few consecutive years (we would've been 1st but the team that always won first place was consistently stacked with guys a few years older then us that should'nt have been in the same league) but anyway I stopped bowling in leagues for quite a few years but I still went all the time with people for fun.

I just recently (a month ago) joined a league on Monday nights because on of my brothers team members decided they didnt want to be on the team anymore. I know bowling leagues have a weird stigma and a lot of people think its like an old fogey type thing to do or the weirdos all hang out at the bowling alleys but its a lot of fun and I really like the competition, I'm getting better in a short time since I've started going regularly but I'm really glad that I was in that league when I was much younger cause they taught me a lot of stuff that has helped me not to just look like an idiot throwing the ball and properly set up my steps and use the marks on the lane and such.

I only do candlepin bowling because that's whats popular around here anyway, theres a few 10-pin alleys but I never bowled it before and the few times I went I didnt enjoy it, I think theres more skill in candelpin anyway and of course the scores are much lower because its so different (my average now is a 95 and I consider myself a pretty reasonably good bowler) but I've heard that candlepin is mostly only a northeastern type thing and those types of lanes arent really that popular in other parts of the country, not sure if its true though.

So what about it any other big fans of bowling or league bowlers around here???

I went bowling, for recreation and in a leage with religious regularity when I was younger. Don't quite know why I dropped it, really, as it is quite a bit of fun. In the years since, I never really thought about picking it back up, but I might go play a game or two in the coming weeks. I was pretty good for my age, and I know with practice I could get good again.

We only have 10-pin here. I don't even know wtf candlepin is.

I've been bowling for 30 years now. Not that it matters as I still suck! But it's a good reason to drink beer.

I bowled for a long time and never got any better either... My mom got me into it when I was a kid. She was really good at it.

I used to bowl regularly with my friends, but then GH noticed a pattern. Apparently everytime we went bowling, something drastically bad happened to him soon after, like karma for knocking down all of those innocent pins, or something. Now, he always vetos bowling if someone suggests it as a group activity.

Used to bowl all the time when I was Active Duty Air Force, cheap games & cheap beer at the Base Bowling Alley! WOOT! Stopped going after I left the military.

Had a 220 average for a while, went a few weeks ago with some friends, barely eeked out a 160! :wtf: :bawling: Kept hitting myself in the leg as I released, need some serious practice. :shakehead

I guess I should've explained the difference when I said that I thought candlepin was only around the northeast, guess I heard correctly :)

The difference is the pins are shaped a lot differently, the balls are much smaller and lighter and you throw 3 balls per frame (having only played 10 pin twice, I think I remember you only roll 2 balls per frame, right??)

candle pin on the left, 10 pin on the right of course

candlepin vs. 10 pin ball

this page has a lot of good info

but it says that people play duckpin bowling on the "east coast" but I've never seen a bowling alley with duckpin bowling.

and like I said before the scores in candlepin are a lot lower because it's much harder to score a mark, or I guess just harder to score higher in general, than in 10 pin with the larger balls and pins. There's a couple alleys around here that have both candlepin and ten pin but most around here at candlepin only.

I don't bowl much, but I know of one duckpin alley in Maryland. I was very weirded out at first.

Candlepin? I've never heard of it - and probably the rest of the country hasn't either since any televised or "professional" bowling thing that you hear about is always tenpin.

Hey, in michigan we have the original "featherbowling (http://www.freep.com/entertainment/newsandreviews/clubs/cadieux.htm)!" :D

Yeah, like I said I've mostly heard of it only being a Northeast US/Parts of Canada type thing. They do have televised candlepin tournaments on some of the regional channels around here, but yea I've only seen 10pin on like ESPN and stuff.
