Cannot delete messages from Outlook Express

I have been using Outlook Express on my old Windows 98 Dell machine for years with no problems, but three days ago it refused to allow me to delete messages from the Inbox. I get an MSIMN caused exception: "MSIMN caused an exception c0000006H in module DirectDB.DLL at 016f:01f05556. It will not allow deleting individual message, nor emptying the deleted message folder.
