View Full Version : Anyone else watch ROME?
Been watching it since it first came on HBO. I kinda disliked it at first becuase it was more of a softcore porn than anything else, but it's got me hooked now. Especially after I got to see Cleopatra today :vimp:
So yeah, great show... not so many porn portions anymore(if I want porn I can come here......... to the internet.) but it's still great ;D

its good, but not as good as most of HBOs other series. I would prefer, in order
Sopranos (JANUARY BITCHES WHOOOOO)
Carnival (this show is spectacular, just not as much material as the Sopranos)
Deadwood (all I can say... wow)
rome is an amazing show, thank goodness for hbo on-demand... i like carnival and deadwood too, never got into the sapranos deal
I really like Rome... My wife wasn't too keen but it has grown on her. We TIVO it every week now...
Carnival was a GREAT show. I wish HBO would have allowed the writer to go to Showtime though.... The last episode kinda left us hanging.... :shakehead

I'll check out the DVDs they'll inevitably release someday, but there's no way I'm paying for HBO.

Carnivale News from HBO... News from 05-11-2005 (http://www.hbo.com/carnivale/news/index.shtml)
After a two-season (24 episode) run, HBO has decided not to renew its Emmy®-winning Depression-era drama, Carnivale . As Carolyn Strauss said, "We have decided not to renew Carnivale. We feel the two seasons we had on the air told the story very well and we're proud of what everyone associated with the show has accomplished."

I don't know, I doubt it though being that it was so long ago. I take the whole TV/Movie "Based on a true story" type of thing with a grain of salt(whatever that means). It's just another form of entertainment to me.

other than the two main characters (who just play soldiers so what they did IRL doesn't really matter), they're pretty much on target with this stuff
HBO lives on accuracy, Deadwood wasn't so far off base either
yeah rome is a great show...i look foward to it every week.
as far as historically accurate, the answer is yes--sorta. based on real true story equals no-not really. it is based on as much historical fact as they could find, but mostly based on legends and myths and stories passed on through generations. i saw a behind the scenes "making of rome" on the history channel. it seems hbo and the history channel are working together to make the show rome as historically accurate as possible to that of ancient rome. so all of the costumes, sets, and scenery, etc...
the story is fiction of course, but based in a historically accurate setting. the behind the scenes was very cool, talked alot about pompeii (the city buried by mt. vesuvius, not pompei magnus). basically, since the volcanic ash preserved everything in pristine condition, it is relatively easy to figure out what ancient rome was like. the big thing that the history channel people pointed out was the amount of graffiti and the overall amount of color throughout the city of pompei. brightly painted houses and buildings adorned the cityscape but many of the their walls were covered in very filthy graffiti. Images of beastiality and other sexual acts littered the walls of public and private buildings throughout the city.
seems these romans were a preverted bunch. explains the softcore porno feel it had in the beginning.
keep up the good work hbo!
p.s. i also like curb your enthusiasm, extras, deadwood, and sopranos
Ohh yeah.... them Roman's make Japanese men seem prude ;D
