View Full Version : Promise TX4 vs Silcon Image

I'm currently using a Silcon Image (v2) IDE RAID controller card. It's hooked to two 40gig WD 8mb Cache drives. I just picked up a a Promise Tx4 (older one) which is a 4-channel card. If I still only used the 2 drives would there be any speed benefit in switching to this card?

I also have a WD 80g 8mb Drive. Would running 2 of these be faster then the 2 40g?

I also thought about picking up another 40g & running a 3 disk array.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've heard that the SI is a tib faster, So I don't think it's worth switching. I've been using Promise controllers since they started, and I've never liked them. All of the RAIDs I've ever lost have been on Promise controllers. I would say to stick with the SI.

Stick with the SI as it is faster. You could probably tweak your array with the Latency Guide at the end of this thread (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=195) (last post). As far as an 80 being faster; nope, it is the same drive but with 2 platters so the density is the same and that is where the difference in speed would come into play, but not here.

Thanks for the input guys.

I have tried tweaking the latency. from 64 all the up to 248. I never really saw much of a difference. I also tried the Breeze latency patch and that seemed to make things slower.

How do my Atto scores look?

I have an A7v333 v1.02, 2500+@2255, 1gig pc2700 (512x2)

Hey guys thanks for all the help and input. I think I'll stick with the SI card and sell the Promise for what I paid for it.
