Syster Restart Hangs

To whom it may concern:

A short while ago, my system began to hang when I would try to restart it or when it would have to restart after a program installation or windows update etc. What happens is I'll click on the restart button from the "turn off computer" context menu and then nothing happens for almost a full 3 minutes. Then it goes into the blue splash? screen for saving windows settings for another minute or so before finally "logging off" and then restarting. The boot up sequence is all normal. Boot up takes almost no time at all.
This happened once before when I first purchased my system and when I contacted the manufacturer (Alienware) their solution was to reformat from my image disk. I don't want to go through that again so I'm looking for a possible alternative answer. My only guess is that there is a (or several) program(s) that is not shutting down right away, facilitating the system hang-up. I don't know what it is though.
Browsing through other threads, I've already gone through the process of running Spybot S&D, as well as HijackThis (posted below), ran a Panda ActiveScan, as well as various other spyware programs including Webroot Spysweeper, and Lavasoft AdAware. My antivirus program is McAfee virus scanner which runs every day.

Let's start by fixing those O10 entries. Download LSPFix (http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm) and then unzip the file to your desktop. Open LSPFix then check the "I know what I'm doing" box. Locate all instances of nvappfilter.dll and remove them.

Reboot into safe mode. To enter safe mode tap the F8 button at the start up screen. Then select safe mode from the menu. Run a full system scan with spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE. Remove all items found.

Reboot and post a new log.

Done and done. I removed the nvappfilter.dll files as directed and ran sweeps in safe mode. With the exception of spy sweeper, only tracking cookies were found. Spy-sweeper only found a Windows-firewall-disable-notify, or something to that effect. Here's the new HijackThis log.

I did as you requested and the problem still persists. The problem is thus: When I go to restart my computer, whether after a software update or otherwise, my system remains in the desktop for anywhere between 2-4 minutes (in the process of shutting down, as I can't open any programs during this time) and then proceeds to the blue "logging off" screen where it then hangs for another 1-3 minutes before finally restarting. The system boots fine and in fact quite rapidly, it's only when a restart request has been sent. Here are my system specs:

This problem has happened once before when I first purchased the system and so all I did was re-image the computer and it worked fine. As I've had the system for quite some time now, re-imaging wouldn't be as easy as popping the DVD in the drive, I'd have a lot of backing up to do and so I'm looking for another solution.

I once had the exact same problem as you about a year back. I can't remember what I did to fix the problem because I tried all sorts such as registry editing etc. Like you said in your first post, it could be a software problem where something is not shutting down correctly.

Try this:

Close any apps you have running in your system tray such as MSN Messenger but especially your Anti-Virus software.

Reboot your computer and see if things improve.
