Infected with Winfixer 2005 (virtumondo)

Hi Guys

My computer was infected with virtumondo virus, and while browsing I have constant pop up ad for winfixer, poker, and others. This is getting annoying and my computer slows down.

I have run Webroot Spysweeper, Microsoft antispyware, and Spybot, but everytime they say the virtumondo.exe has been cleared from the computer, it comes back! I even ran FixVundo.exe and FxVMonde.exe from Symantec, it didn't help.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/downloads/VundoFix.exe) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.
It should look like this
VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk.

At this point press enter one time.
Next you will see:
Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):


C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvtr.dll



Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):


C:\WINDOWS\system32\rtvwa.*



Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.


Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm)

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi Crunchie

I think I did something wrong while running vundofix.exe, after inputting " C:\WINDOWS\system32/awvtr.dll, I pressed enter, then F6, then enter, which the program says that it doesn't recognize delete as some internal or external command, and hijack this auto pops up.
When I looked closely, I think after inputting the first filepath, I am supposed to press enter, then input the second filepath, then enter, F6, enter. In another words, should I press F6 and enter right after the first filepath as instructed in your guide?

I wasn't able to complete the fix, but I don't want to do anything before you take a look at my new hijack this log: (my computer is still infected as told by microsoft antispyware)

One thing to add, everytime I restart my computer, Microsoft Antispyware will give me a warning about virtumondo trying to install on my computer. I have the option of ignore or remove virtumondo, and I always chose the latter and then do a full scan, which gives clean result. But the problem comes back after restarting. Perhaps virtumondo is still in my system?

Try this;

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig.

Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore button.

On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.

Reboot.

Go back in and turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Sometimes MS antispyware and other such programs actually interfere with the removal process of malware. If you still get the message from it when rebooting I suggest uninstalling it and then reinstalling it if disabling system restore doesn't work.

Hi Crunchie

I think it works, but I think it wasn't able to fix because I had SpySweeper on, so everytime Microsoft AntiSpyware tries to remove it, I had to select whether to keep the registry change or not. (At least after vundofix AntiSpyware is able to pick up virtumondo upon startup). And I wasn't really sure to select yes or no. So after Microsoft Spyware removes the virus, I shut down SpySweeper, and that seems to solve the problem. After rebooting several times with a scan each time, I think my computer should be free now.

So you are no longer getting the alerts from MS antispware?

Can you please do the following.

We'll need to unload Spybot's Teatimer before we begin. To do this can you start Spybot and go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer. Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit". Do not forget to re-enable it when we are done :).

If any other security program asks if you want to make the changes, select yes.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/) which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Spybot S&D. (http://www.computercops.biz/zx/phoenix22/spybotsd13.zip)
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.


Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here. (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
