Monitor Driver

Problem: Monitor screen is not what I set it as, all options but brightness and contrast are locked in the 'menu' button. Can scroll thru, can't do anything.

Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 175v

Driver: I have no idea, if you have somewhere for me to check it, I will.

What I would like done: get it fixed so it will have my settings and menu not be locked

Extra info: I've fixed this twice now by going into 'Intel extreme graphics' and hitting reset settings. This works at odd intervals, sometimes it does, sometimes...not...the screen stays the same colour during booting, if that helps any.

Are you sure you have your graphics card drivers installed properly? That is normally the cause for the screenmode not being saved and asking you to restart every time you change it.

it was for a long time, since I installed windows on this computer, I think it broke though...screen mode IS saved, I have all the properties there, it's the monitor that tweaks its own settings in its own screen (hit menu on your monitor, the coarsness is up to 100 here...) Also, if I restart, it goes like this. It doesn't care if I restart or not. Just restore settings will work sometimes/rarely.

Ah, thats nothing to do with Windows or Drivers at all, it's a problem with your monitor itself then.

Samsung would like to disagree. I ran their self-test (shut everything, check if a box popped up, which it did, said 'oh...you're fine then, it's a driver')

So the question remains, 'how and where would I find a driver that would fix this beast?'

Control panel - classic view - intel (r) extreme graphics

intel extreme graphics is my video card (I guess...) and it lets me tweak the colours displayed. It's like the one that comes with the monitor but..different by a little.

From what I understand, your OSD monitor settings are being changed- right? If this is the case, its definitely your monitor's fault. Maybe your power is going out, or some other electrical problem, and the settings are being lost?

OSD? Power is not going out, wires should be okay..:goes to double check:..yea, wires are good..settings on the monitor are being LOCKED, it knows that they are in there, it just chooses to lock them and change them to something obscure to say 'hey, I locked it, fix me'. I'd assume driver as the wires are all good, can't see any breaks/looseness.

What we need to establish here though is the difference between terms because you're confusing us. Monitor settings are what you change when you press the buttons on the front of your monitor (and they normally have an OSD). Graphics card settings are the ones you change through control panel and display settings.

I gotcha, sorry for being confusing...this is why I don't work between drivers and all that technical crap I REALLY dispise...I can work my way around spyware and the like but a driver will get me confused beyond anything.

Okay, I'll restate everything in the tech terms here. My OSD is changed, not very much as most of the settings are the same as they are when the screen is behaving. The graphic card settings are the ones that I go to to fix my monitor. I don't know why but hitting the 'restore default' button will fix it sometimes. Possibly because my monitor decides to change the OSD settings back.

Like I said in my orignal post and several posts ago, I need to update the driver but where? Dell installed the software for me, I'm sure it's not a monitor thing because I can't change its driver or anything. (Didn't come with cds, didn't ask for cds, like a monitor should). I'm about 80% positive that my electrical crap is fine because Samsung said it was all running fine, just a driver defect.

The video driver was installed by Dell, when my first hardrive crashed, I had to reinstall the driver but I don't remember how I did it. I think I'll check thru my cds and see if I saved the .exe (if there was one). (I save my install .exe's, saves a LOT of time when your computer malfuctions or something...or a friend needs a program that's gone off the internet or to fix their computer...)

Okay, I ran the .exe from the CD (I had backed it up!), restarted...grey screen *punch*..manual boot...grey screen *punch*...manual boot...wait..wait...grey screen...wait wait..shower..login screen so I log in, it's FINE, everything is temporarily fixed. I'm not sure for how long, so don't close this YET. If it's fine when I come back from the parade (lawl, how well placed is that?) I'll check to see if it's reverted back. If it has, manually delete the intel drivers and reinstall them.

Drivers rarely if ever have drivers as they are pretty much generic. Nothing can change the monitors OSD controls other than you, or the monitor itself if it is defective and not saving the settings. If the Intel Extreme thing is messing up then go to the Intel website and look for the latest drivers for that. Driver CDs are BAD. They are normally months or YEARS behind the latest drivers available. They are only useful when you can't get online to get an initial driver (say for the ethernet card to use the LAN to browse the web).

Went to the Intel site, entered the driver I had for 2 years, the one recommended. Found a recent one, about a month old. Downloaded, installed, completely useless. Monitor worked after the other one was installed but this one just added like half a feature. Completely useless to my eye, not sure about security and whatnot but whatever, hopefully it'll stay up and working.
