Opteron 939 production stopped.

AMD has cancelled production of several SKUs, including the Socket 939 Opterons. Are we ready for M2 yet?

You can see that the company has stopped production of Sempr0n 2500+, 3100+ and Athlon 64 3000+, 3200+ and 3500+, all in Processor-In-Box (PIB) format. At the end of the list, all Opterons using Socket 939. Is this a preparation for early Socket M2 launch?

They are telling and have been saying it for a while now. AMD is abandoning all the current sockets for new ones coming out next year. The new CPU's that fit the new sockets will run on DDR2 only so that means we will all be S.O.L. with our current memory sticks. :( I'm still not convinced that DDR2 has matured enough yet to be as good as DDR is now.

Good thing I got my opty early.. I agree mtgoat, DDR2 really won't benefit the A64 much, if at all. Sure, higher frequencies, but really slack timings. I have a feeling it's just because of pressure from memory companies, as it's going to be getting more expensive to produce both ddr1 and 2. Plus: it's a dog eat dog world... joe smith in the hardware store is going to see 667MHz memory for the intel platforms, and 400MHz for AMD, and assume intel is faster..

The ASRock Dual SATA board (the one with both AGP and PCIe) has a slot which is made to fit the new "M2" socket and CPUs by way of a daughterboard.

Since the DDR2 controller is supposed to be backwards compatible with DDR there's a chance that for a while at least there will be bastard boards with DDR rather than DDR2 for the M2 socket.

The thing about DDR2 even though it's latencies are higher you can run it faster than the FSB (ala 9XX Intel chipsets) for some outrageous bandwidth.

Yeah what he said ...this is why I built when I did. I like to give the market a chance to mature first before I spend that much money on a system.

I was reading today that the current stepping 175 is getting a better overclock than the ones we got. I think it's week 43 or 46 and they are getting 2.7 on stock volts. You better verify that it was xtreme systems.

I don't know about that, RWB. I just got one (because it can do either pci-e or agp and mainly because it's cheap :D ) and so far it's not been a bad board at all. My main problem so far has been dealing with the low voltage options that it gives for vdimm, with 2.7v being max when it's set to high in bios, since I'm running some value VX in it. I put my DDR booster in it though (it works fine with this board) and I'm now giving that UTT about 3.5v vdimm and it's running well. I'll guess I'll just have to see how long it stays running, RWB.

Don't wanna veer off topic, but mine constantly crashed, gave an array of artifacting issues in some games. Then just went dead on me without warning(if you don't count the a-forementioned ;D )

But reading up on other forums I noticed the board had various "issues". I don't care though anymore, I love my new X2 setup with an Abit Fatal1ty AN8-SLI :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Reading about the board make me think it's the Socket 939 equivelant to the K7S5A. It's a budget board designed for upgraders, and with care to keep drivers and BIOS up to date it can be rock-solid stable at stock, and with a couple hardware mods it could be a great overclocker board for the money.

I found this thread while wondering about Opteron 939 dual-processor units. Am I the only one disappointed that these (165, 170, 175...) ARE being discontinued? Seems like the graphics drivers are being extended to benefit from this, but the AMD chips are disappearing (until the new socket)!
