View Full Version : Installing Windows from an image

Hey guys, I'd appreciate any help on this one.

A friend of mine gave me his laptop hard drive to wipe, and stated that he'd like some version of Windows with it. He's got a busted CD reader, but a DVD reader that works. Couple of problems start here. I can't just install Windows to his hard drive, because it'll go based off of the hardware setup of my desktop. I ripped the image of a legal copy of Windows I have for this project, but you can't put it on a DVD because the images aren't interchangeable. Here's my question:

Is there any way I can put the image of the CD on the hard drive itself such that when it gets booted the first time, it can go straight to installing Windows right from there?

Short of that, do you guys have any other suggestions?

Thanks everybody

MJ

what kind of cd image are you talking about? I make iso images of all my cd's when I get them and keep them stored on a HD. I can burn a XP cd iso onto a dvd no problem.

Make a iso image of and cd and burn it to a dvd.

Tex -

Of course you're right. I was ripping it in Nero, which doesn't allow me much room for configuration. Trying again with Alcohol. Many thanks for knocking the sense back into me. ;)

Just kidding.

If I try to burn the ISO I got from Alcohol using alcohol, it tells me my DVD is unformatted and won't do anything. If I try to burn it using Nero, it tells me it needs a CD to burn the ISO, not a DVD.

Other ideas?

Apparently I was just kidding again. Playing around with Alcohol got it all worked out. Sorry for the premature posting!

Thanks for everything - you guys have helped me before, and it's always been great!

try using Ultra Iso or one of the other iso specialty programs to rip it to iso format. Its so slick and easy. Then nero will burn it fine
