New to your forum, having a problem stopping constant pop-up ads like www.shop-savings.com/normal/yyy65.html, www.deal-foryou.com/normal/yyy65.html, and many other similar. All seemed to start after one of my teenage sons downloaded a virus/worm through AIM. Followed directions from AIM Website for removal, but not sure if I was successful or if this is related to that. Running VirusScan On Access and have run AdAware and Spybot. Here is my HJT log-- can you help?

Hi, welcome to Short-Media :)
Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe
Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Thanks so much for your reply, and sorry for the delay getting back to you-- holiday madness. Since receiving your reply I have had to re-install Windows because it was so slow I couln't get anything done. Have reinstalled McAfee VirusScan, Spybot S&D and Lavasoft Adaware, and installed Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Beta. Running all these and still some popups and browser hijack attempts. I did as you advised in your post, and here's the log:

I should have mentioned, the last time I ran Spybot S&D, there were 2 items that could not be fixed-- both registry keys, called Command Service.

Please move HJT from your Desktop to its own folder on your C: so backups can be created. Do this before continuing.
--
Download KillBox. Unzip it to your desktop.
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
--
Check the following in HJT and click 'Fix Checked' - Close ALL open Browsers first
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [0wao0o9s.dll] RUNDLL32.EXE 0wao0o9s.dll,b 30960609
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [drsmartloadb] c:\\drsmartloadb.exe
O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
--
Open killbox and paste in c:\drsmartloadb.exe
With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, click the option *Delete on Reboot*
Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will ask you to reboot now, click YES.
--
Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml
Once in Safe Mode, please run Ewido
Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido
Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Followed your instructions in HJT, then when I put c:\drsmartloadb.exe into Killbox, and clicked Yes to confirm it was OK to reboot, I got this message: PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by external process. Was not sure if that was what was supposed to happen, and whether I should now reboot and continue with the rest of your instructions.

Disable SpywareGuard, as it will interfere with the fix:
Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, file, exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.

Reboot and post a new HJT log. Hopefully the last one :)
How are things?

Did as you suggested, and below is the new HJT log. No pop-ups since I returned from my son's soccer game (I see you are also a fan). Really appreciate all of your help-- this computer is used almost exclusively by my two teenaged sons, who are not so careful about what they're doing. I noticed that many of the files that turned up recently were cookies or temp internet files. Is it a good idea for my boys to delete these each time they finish a session online? Would that help?

Sorry- forgot to post log. Also, I don't know what the file is that you asked about.

I just found out that the file is bad.
Could you remove this entry with HJT:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CU2] C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient\VCMain.exe
--
Find and Delete the this file:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient\VCMain.exe << this file
--
Reboot your computer and post a new HJT log to check if its gone :)

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!
Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:
Secure your Internet Explorer by going here (http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm) and following the instructions there.
Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/) which in my opinion, is better still.
Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables.
Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Spybot S&D. (http://www.computercops.biz/zx/phoenix22/spybotsd13.zip)
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.
Install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster 3.4 (http://short-media.com/download.php?dc=69)
Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.
Check for Windows Updates. (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.
Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.
Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.
Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here. (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)
Empty the Recycle Bin.
For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.
Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.
Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.
Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
