Announcing A New SMx Computer!
:celebrate SM31 Needs A Good Home!!! :celebrate
:smokin:
It's that time of year when gift-giving is popular, so Team 93 would like to give some lucky person the opportunity to host one of our SMx Project computers in their own home. While everyone else is opening gifts like socks, underwear, and hard-as-a-rock fruitcake left over from 1967, you could be unwrapping the makings of a pretty nice Folding machine. Tell me, which would look better under your tree? :D
:smokin:
If you meet the qualifications for hosting one of our SMx machines, why not sign up to be a candidate? You could be the one chosen to house this Folding rig in your home, not to mention having that extra Folding sig to show off your status as one of Team 93's elite group of SMx Hosts.
The Hosting Requirements and Selection Process are available on the team page. (http://www.short-media.com/folding.php?v=smx) Please look them over carefully before signing up.
If you feel you meet the requirements and are willing to sign the contract, throw your name in the hat by posting in this thread and giving us some details about your hosting conditions (connection, environment, etc.) and your computer ability that would mark you as a suitable host for our latest SMx Folding machine.
:smokin:
Check out this baby:
SM31 Specs:
Motherboard: Soyo Dragon Ultra Platinum Ed. (KT400-8235)
CPU: Athlon XP 2000+
Hard Drive: Western Digital 4.3GB
Display Adapter: Diamond Viper II Z200 32MB AGP
Memory: Kreton Blitz series DDR433 512MB (256MB X 2)
NIC: Onboard VIA PCI 10/100Mb Fast Ethernet Adapter
Case: A Brand-New Case & PSU will be shipped directly to the new host.
:smokin:
If you happened upon this thread by accident and wonder what it is exactly that Folding hopes to accomplish, check out Join Folding (http://www.joinfolding.com) for a quick summary of the F@H Project. Like many of us here, you could put your spare computer cycles to work for the betterment of mankind. Won't you consider joining us?
:smokin:
Sign up soon. We will give you plenty of notice before the signup period is closed and the SMx Committee vote is taken.
As per our new policy, there are no geographical limitations on hosting eligibilty.
:smokin:
Check out The SMx Project - Reloaded! (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?p=261619) thread for more information on the project in general. If you have any parts you could spare for future SMx rigs, go here (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30550) and have a look at what we need. Memory (PC1600 or greater) and Motherboards are in extremely short supply. To keep this project going we need your help.
Good luck, everybody! :fold:

UM I think I am qualified!
I am still running a Nice Fiber connection, with about 14 open slots on my network of 12 computers. My room never goes under 72 Degrees because I like it that cold :) Power bill isn't an issue, I run my own computer repair shop and build my own comps so I don't think and Comp issues will be a problem! www.mandmcr.com
I have been a Member here at SM for 4 months now "not the longest. but starting to build friends around here", But I think I have made it clear this is my home for Folding :) I am now folding in rank 75th for Team SM I have also gotten the community going with the other fun things I try to do. So I can only hope you the SM high ranked ballers will consider me for the cause :)
SLEDGEHAMMER70 wants In :)

The Powers that Be, (SMX Committee) take a lot into consideration. Don't let Sledges' app. discourage you. Throw your hat in!
FWIW, Still no room at my house. A couple of rigs still sitting idle.

It's not the application that is chosen for the SMx rig, Like Donut said, the SMX Committee is the one to decide. IN my opinion everyone who applies has a very good chance of making it on the SMx team if they can meet all the rules & expectations for the SMx project.

How about a slight deviation from our normal decision method:
I propose a stickfight to settle the winner. He who still has most of his fingers and both of his eyeballs at the end wins. You'll need those to put together SM31 :D

We are rolling these out in a different order than they were marked when they first appeared on my test bench, so the one labeled "SM33" is actually SM31.
Even with a new rig every couple of weeks we should be set for the next few months:

Nope, not too late. :)
We usually give a full week for people to sign up (though this is not guaranteed for future rigs - we sometimes encounter special circumstances). Going strictly by that there are about 6.5 hours left. Since the process is not automatic, anyone who is eligible may throw their hat in the ring right up until the point that a member of the SMx Committee announces that the signup period has ended.
Good luck!

I'm a systems admin so can fix most problems that crop up, I've been folding since August 2004 (I think) and seem to have come to rest at around position 27 in team 93 (although that might change when I go dual core ina couple of weeks :) ) and um...well that's about it I guess. Oh, I have an 8Mb 24/7 connection and a 24 port switch with several spare ports

With four of six voters reporting in, there is but a single vote separating the leader and the guy in second place. Every candidate still has a mathematical chance of at least being tied for the lead once the last two ballots arrive.

If you guys knew the subject of a PM I received from Armo the other day, half of you would faint from excitement and the other half would storm Villa de Prof demanding that I hand over the {item which will remain a secret for the time being}.*

All I can say at this point is that I'm sure that there will be four worthy candidates who will be disappointed this time around.
I can also assure them that their disappointment will not be permanent. Every one of our candidates deserves the exalted title of SMx Host, and with the lineup I see sitting here on my workbench, (not to mention The Big Number™ - which UPS tells me is sitting a mere couple of hundred yards away) I think it's safe to say that any also-ran status will be fleeting - there will be a new rig announced soon. :fold:

It's been picked. :D
Two boxes; one big'un and one little'un. The big one is there to take care of the heavy lifting and provide the backbone of what will be a very big step for the SMx Project. The smaller one is just oozing raw potential Folding power.
Gee, as much as I'd like to clue you all in on the details, the Big Number™ will have to remain a secret between Armo and me for the time being.

Can't you atleast tell us who is in the running?
It's like the final ballots for 2 presidents! and we are blind folded on our choices...
Yes, the two people in the running make up a full 40% of the five people who entered their names. Those two are tied for first place with the same amount of ballot points. Their forum names contain letters and/or numbers and they are both- as far as we can tell- of the species Homo Sapiens. Additionally, both live on Earth and both have 4-chambered hearts.
I know I shouldn't have divulged that much information, so I apologize to those of you no longer in the running. It's always difficult to exclude 60% of the population from something as prestigious at this.

"As far as we can tell" being the critical bit of information. :mullet:

I wouldn't want to get too far ahead of myself here, either.... ;D

u should just announce the two that took it to the wire and release 2 machines at once! U have enough going!
releaseing two machines would speed up "other" projects

I think that releasing the SMx rigs one at a time insures that there will still be a pool of viable hosts each time a machine is put out. For example, all 5 of the people who wanted this rig are worthy candidates for hosting. What if the committee decided to give each person a machine now? Then, next time a machine is ready for release, what happens if nobody signs up, because everyone who's ready to host a rig at the time just got one from this time. Or, even worse, what if a new rig is ready, and only Johnny N00berman signs up for it, then there's nobody except an untested team member to give it to... that's a recipe for a lost machine, if you ask me.
In other words, it's my personal opinion that prof's got a good release schedule going at this point. Besides, as often as he's releasing them, all 5 of these candidates will probably be hosting by June or even earlier!

all 5 of these candidates will probably be hosting by June or even earlier Well, that would depend on the payola. :D
Did I say that? Uh, "payola" - that means granola with peanuts in the mix. Yes, that's what I meant.
