Slow Running Computer

Its been a while since I've been in the forum room and was wondering if somebody could take a look at my HJT log. Its been running quite slow and I believe it has something to do with the number of running processes. Thank you and its nice to be back (even though it means my comp is acting up again).

You are missing the top bit from your HJT log. It seems to me you have an older version of HJT.

Download the new version (1.99.1) if you don't have it from the link below:

In the meantime, follow the instructions below to remove NewDotNet.

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall NewdotNet. If you don't have that option or if you have difficulties then please follow the instructions on this site (http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html)

Thanks for your reply. I successfully removed new.net domains. I also have another problem for you to help me with if you would be so kind. When I type in a search in an engine's search bar there is a scroll bar that drops down with possible matches. Many are pornographic and some are not but equally embarrassing. I don't know where these come from because I do not visit these types of sites. (although my brother may when he comes to visit) I've tried everything from deleting the search history to cleaning up recently visited web sites to no avail. I am assuming it has something to do with some files that I can never delete in my virus scan report. They are types of search assistants but i can never get rid of them. Please help me with this problem if you can. Here is my new HJT scan and as always thank you for your time.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here (http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm) and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/) which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Spybot S&D. (http://www.computercops.biz/zx/phoenix22/spybotsd13.zip)
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster 3.4 (http://short-media.com/download.php?dc=69)

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.


Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here. (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Thanks a bundle!! I was wondering if you could help me with the problem I was having with my search bar. When I type in a search on an engine some program is giving me options to complete my typing in a scroll bar below the search box (i.e. some pornographic and some just ridiculous). I believe the problem is with some files that I can't get rid of when they show up in my virus scan report. They are: asm.exe, asmps.dll, IExploreSkins.exe and toolbar.dll. They are described as websearch and topsearch in the report description. Please help me if you can or if not no big deal you already helped more than enough. If I need to post another thread just let me know. Thanks again for all your help. Erik

Have you tried clearing your History and Deleting Temp files? Not sure if it will work but worth a shot...


Go Start
Control Panel
Click on Internet Options
Click the General Tab and under Temporary Internet Files click...
Delete Files...
Delete Cookies...
Under History
Click Clear History



If I could have a bit more info, I might be able to help or your best bet would to start a new thread in the General Software Forum.

:cheers: Nevermind. I just had to play around a bit with my comp and got rid of it. I tried all of that but nothing worked. I finally found that if I clicked The search button on the tooolbar and went to edit preferences and turn off autocomplete it worked. Sorry for wasting your time and thanks again. Erik
