View Full Version : Forum Upgrade

It's time for a forum upgrade & update :)
The version of Vbulletin we are running (while patched to the correct security level) is getting long in the tooth and we need to bring it up to date, so that all the nifty little features in the new versions are available to you :)
So if the forums go offline for an hour at some point today, you know why ;D :D

Ok folks.. Im gonna make a cuppa (of tea) and then shut the forums & site down for a bit :)
VBulletin 3.5 has masses of changes that have significantly changed the frontpage as well. It's taken me most of the day just to get the frontpage fixed as well. Bit by bit :)
Shorty
28 Dec 2005, 5:34pm
Well it took just over an hour and it appears to be all working ok :)
Yes, most things have reverted back to default but this is because VB3.5 changed not only the forums but required 29 pages of code from the frontpage to be changed as well :)
I will add back in hot threads and so on over the next few hours and the little hacks will re-appear, please just give me some time and report all bugs in this thread please :)

I miss the link for short-Media at the bottom as it was easier to click on.
For example:
Short-Media Forums > Short-Media > Feedback << would be at the top
Short-Media Forums > Short-Media > Feedback << would be at the bottom
Where are the orginal smilies that used to be in the front???
EDIT: Click the attachment for bigger pic. I like the edit feature

I plenty of edits and things to do :)
I will be doing them all over the next day or so. This upgrade effected every customised template, alot of code changes and masses of frontpage work. It will come in time :)

28 Dec 2005, 6:24pm
Thanks shorty :)
//EDIT: Trogan addressed my concern already.
Secondly, I believe there used to be solid-black 1px borders around all the separate posts in a thread, and I'd really like that line back as it kept everything containered and clean.

28 Dec 2005, 6:29pm
One more thing: I also don't like the look of the new stickies. I prefer the way they were. :)
Shorty
28 Dec 2005, 6:29pm
Both will be returning :)
Im just having some food as I've not stopped working on this for about 12 hours today and most of last night as well :)
In the vein of things that are good, I like the new edit box which doesn't make you reload the page, and I like the knew quick-reply box as it is easily-expandable so one can keep track of everything being written.

Couple things I noticed, not to pester you, Shorty.
The block of space between different sections is gone. I couldn't figure out why the main page was itching at my mind so much, and I think that's it. Also, the bar separating stickies from regular threads is gone (unless you already covered that... I don't really know).

What about the stickies? And the SVT Forum?
Stickies are 50/50%. It is felt that seperating the stickies means they get missed. I am going to highlight/bold the sticky word instead and see how it goes :)

Great work, as usual, Shorty.
I like your idea of keeping the stickies and normal threads together, you're right in saying they got missed previously.
I also like the quick reply box that is smilie-free. I can "Go Advanced" if I forget what a particular smilie's code is, but it just seems so much cleaner without them right there on Quick Reply.
I also very much appreciate the persistent read/unread status on the threads.

I now seem to have a prob with SM.
When I post anything the screen goes to a white, blank window with 'done' at the bottom. That'll sit there until I open Firefox again then I get the send to microsoft message and firefox shuts down. If I then reopen it and come back the post has been posted. This only happens with SM, I have cleared the cashe etc.
If I edit my post and save it works ok, it's just with new posts.
Strange, I'm running FireFox with no odd issues.

Omega and I don't always have the time to screen thread titles for accuracy there. It's frustrating for users to get all excited about a for-sale offering only to open the thread, dig through it, and find that the item is no longer available. Thread title editing makes the Trading browsing much easier for the users and moderators.

Your dedication and persistance is above and beyond. My hat is off to you.
The only thing I do not like is the attached thumbnails. I liked it better when the pictures were just displayed. I did read your comment on page loading times. Is it a bandwidth issue for the server ? Or just an issue with users with slow connections ? It has never been "Slow" for me. Would it be possible to make it a choice in the users control panel ?

Awesome work guys ! Thanks

Cool look on the upgrade, very nice. Just thought I'd chime in that I'm getting a lot of "Done but with errors" messages on showthread pages and it seems a lot of time the pages are "sticking", ie: they load like half the page and then stick so I have to reload the page one or more times to get it to complete.

I don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but in FireFox 1.5, clicking "Post Quick Reply" at the bottom will of course post, but the next page is nothing more than my F@H sig and thats it.
FireFox 1.0.7 would error out clicking on that.

Yep. Im aware of it but at the moment, I have no way of finding out how to fix it. The folding@home signatures clash with the VBulletin AJAX javascript that is used to not require a refresh of a thread to add the new post :(
I may have to disable that rather nice feature so that the problem goes away. It's worse with any FireFox pre 1.5. It causes those older versions to crash :(
Ok...
I have disabled all the AJAX functions for the moment. Can all those with the FireFox problem tell me if you STILL get the problem or not...? Can you include your FireFox version as well please :)
