Ok, it was a week since I was able to get back to this PC and it's problem, but I did get the latest CCleaner to supplement the already existing (updated) Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search&Destroy, CWShredder, WebRoot (?), and latest Nortan Anti-Virus definitions.

Before this latest cleansing, I had a persistent BackDoor Trojan, plus some other spyware that was still being trapped by Nortan and Ad-Aware.

Can you please do the following.

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

Scan with HiJackThis, then check(tick) the following, if present:


F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\windows\inet20001\winlogon.exe

O4 - Global Startup: hpoddt01.exe.lnk = ?


Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Reboot.

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Ok, while still having System Restore OFF, I let HijackThis.exe fix the following:
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\windows\inet20001\winlogon.exe
O4 - Global Startup: hpoddt01.exe.lnk = ?

I then went to look for the folder:
C:\windows\inet20001

but there was no instance of it (Yes, I made sure that I had Show Hidden Files/Folders enabled and other file view properties)

I then Rebooted. When I came up, there were NO warning dialog windows about "winlogon.exe" (there used to be two warning dialogs appear.) Looks promising!

I then ran HijackThis.exe again. Oh yes, I had moved all my important Temp files like HJT and a few other Ad/Spyware removal tools out of C:\TEMP.

Below is my latest HijackThis.log file. My only concern at the moment would be if I had mucked up the correct instance and registry entry of "WinLogon.EXE".

Looks like you did good :).

Scan with HiJackThis, then check(tick) the following, if present:


O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\temp\AD-SPY~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll (file missing)


Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here (http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm) and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/) which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ewido anti-malware, (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ewido_security_suite_d4677.html) Ad-Aware SE (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Spybot S&D. (http://www.computercops.biz/zx/phoenix22/spybotsd13.zip)
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.


Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here. (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

I still am puzzled by a Windows folder, C:\Windows\temp\08??????.

In previous attempts to clean the trojan virus, Norton and another spyware detection program found persistent executables in this folder.

When I tried to delete the files in this folder and the folder itself, I was not allowed - even to view the folder. I tried in Safe Mode / DOS, but still same thing about "Access denied" and "Another application may be using..."

I have NOT seen if this is still a problem after the last rounds of virus removal. Those previous viruses were not detected anymore.

Recommendation(s) for Firewall for DSL connection, WinXP?

For a firewall, I did use Sygate, but that has now been purchased by Symantec so I ditched it for Kerio. Has built in popup and ad blocker.
For the temp files, try Ccleaner.

Download CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp) and install, then run it.

Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
Close when finished.
