i've attached my hijack this log.

[i brilliantly clicked on a link in an AIM message. and not the first time i've done either...]

i've already eliminated lots and lots of things using various anti-virus and anti-spyware tools etc.

norton and adaware do not think there is any problem with my computer any more. a pcdoctor scan, however, revealed that vx2.look2me and trojan.dropper.agent.tk are still around somewhere.

i've seen quite a few people with the look2me infestation... and i just tried to run something called l2mremover. bad things happened when i tried to run it...

anyway, my logfile is attached. help is muchly appreciated [and desired]. thanks.

Drjpooch. I've copied the full text of your log here so the moderators can look at it without having to open the text file. Hope you don't mind. I'll have a look at it and get back with you.

Definitely a Look2Me infection.

Please follow all the instructions below very carefully:

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

OK. Now follow the below instructions, again very carefully. After performing this step please post another Hijack This log.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new Hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Note : Once the PC has restarted if a log does not appear or the icons didn't disappear, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2mfix folder.

We're making progress. This can be a nasty. Sorry there are so many steps :)

Next download Ad-Aware from my signature below. Install the software and update it but don't run it yet. Download the VX2 plugin for Ad-Aware here. (http://www.lavasoft.com/software/plugins/vx2cleaner.shtml)

Install the VX2 tool.

Next run a full scan with Ad-Aware. Let it delete anything it finds. Then run a scan with Ad-Aware using the VX2 cleaner. It's pretty straightforward to use.

After that post another Hijack This log then we'll work on fixing some entries and looking for some nasty files that might need deleted.

Good news with the Ad-Aware. I didn't think the VX2 cleaner would find anything after we ran L2Mfix but I wanted to be sure we got it. Next step is to make sure you can view all hidden files and folders explained here. (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14915)

Remember to change this back after we're through cleaning. If left on a crucial file could be accidentally deleted.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to this folder:

C:\WINNT\system32\

Find and delete the following files. Do not be alarmed if they don't exist:

kaqcpi.exe
dn8o01l3e.dll

Next go to this folder:

C:\WINNT\

Find and delete the following file if present:

scvhost.exe

Note the spelling on the above file. If there happens to be a file there spelled svchost.exe leave it alone.

If you find any of the above files and you can't delete them in normal mode you may have to boot to safe mode to do it. That is explained here. (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315222)

Next run Hijack This again and put a check (tick) next to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINNT\system32\kaqcpi.exe reg_run

O20 - Winlogon Notify: OemStartMenuData - C:\WINNT\system32\dn8o01l3e.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\scvhost.exe (file missing)

Now close all other open windows/browsers except Hijack This and click Fix Checked.

Post another Hijack This log after you do this. There is one more entry in your log I'm researching so we may have to deal with that too but it doesn't appear to be too much of a problem.

OK looking better. Go to the start menu and click "run". In the box type: services.msc.

A window will open. On the right hand pane look for the following service, if present:

Local Security Authority Subsystem Service

If it is there right click on it and click "stop".

Close the services window.

Run Hijack This again and put a check (tick) next to the following entry:

O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\scvhost.exe (file missing)

Close all open browsers/windows and click Fix Checked.

Post another log after you have done this.

OK. Still can't seem to get that startup service stopped even though the associated file is gone. Copy the following text into notepad:

@ECHO OFF
cd %windir%
sc config Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) start= disabled
sc stop Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass)
attrib -r -s -h scvhost.exe
del scvhost.exe
exit

Save the notepad file to the desktop as remove.bat.

Restart the computer in safe mode and then double click on the remove.bat file. A black screen will appear for a moment. That is normal.

Restart in normal mode.

Run Hijack This again and put a check next to the following entry if it exists:

O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\scvhost.exe (file missing)

Then close all other browsers/windows and click Fix Checked.

Close Hijack This and then run it again to generate a log.

Post that log here after you've completed the above steps.

this remains in the log after the the attempted remove.bat fix:
O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\scvhost.exe (file missing)

When I start up my computer, after the startup icons have appeared on the bottom right, this window appears:

Windows Installer:
Preparing to install...

then changes to

Windows Installer:
Please wait while Windows configures Norton AntiVirus 2005

Then this window appears:

Norton AntiVirus 2005:
Norton Anti-Virus 2005 does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall.

Should i uninstall Norton? Is this actually from my computer or from one of the nasties? Could a corrupted Norton be the reason that
O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\scvhost.exe (file missing)
is not being deleted? Thanks for all your efforts...

Sorry about the delayed reply. I'm currently consulting with another moderator regarding the 023 entry. Hijack This has a little bit of a bug when it comes to these entries. I'm almost certain that this service entry is not affecting your PC, but I don't feel comfortable with it being there so as soon as me and my fellow moderator decide what is best we'll tackle this. The look2me is gone which is great. It would only hamper our efforts. There are a couple more entries you should check with Hijack This and have it fix them. These are listed below:

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

I will get back to you on the 023 entry as soon as possible. In the meantime, other than the Norton issue, could you tell me if you're experiencing any other problems?

The Norton issue could be a corrupted Norton database but I wouldn't uninstall and reinstall just yet. It could be related to the former infection but I'll find out more. Thank you for your patience.

OK it looks like we need to edit the registry to clear this 023 service entry from your log. Please follow the below instructions very carefully:

Go to;

Start>>Run and type regedit
Press enter.
Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass)

If Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass)

If LEGACY_Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Please repeat the above steps for the following 023 service:

O23 - Service: Network Monitor - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\netmon.exe (file missing)

The service name in the registry for this one would be "Network Monitor"

Run Hijack This again after editing registry entries. If the below entries exist put a check next to them and have Hijack This fix them:

O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\scvhost.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Network Monitor - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\netmon.exe (file missing)

Run Hijack This again to generate a log and post the log here.

You said to Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass)

My Registry Editor shows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lsass

[with subfolders 'Enum' and 'Security']

Is that what i want to delete?

Same with:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass)

Mine shows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_lsass

[with subfolder '0000']

Is this also what i want to delete?

Just want a clarification before i start deleting registry files etc.

thanks.

My timeline:

Late afternoon, I return to my computer to find a AIM message [i was actually using Trillian, but this was from an AIM user] from a friend saying something to the extent of "do you want me to post this picture of us on facebook or myspace [and then some link]"

So i clicked on the link [dumb]. and then i clicked on 'save to disk' [dumber], which was the only option it gave me [to merely view it was faded, etc].

[the only defense i will offer, if you choose to believe it, is that i really was expecting a picture prior to receiving this AIM message... and the only reason i'm offering such a lame excuse is because it's true. but clicking on links is still a super-dumb idea. etc.]

the icon that appears on my screen is a MS-DOS shortcut. i double click on it. this causes the icon to disappear.

i then carry on as if nothing has happened [also very dumb]. i continue to use firefox and trillian.

then i leave the computer running, with firefox and trillian still running. folding@home was also running.

i return to my computer 7ish hours later. the screen is black and won't become unblack.

i use the power-off button to turn off my computer and then start it back up.

it starts up normally.

nothing seems to be wrong. so i open up firefox. then things get crazy.

firefox windows start opening all over the place. and they don't respond to my clicking on the tabs or windows to close them.

i contol-alt-deleted and End_Task-ed Firefox.

immediately after i updated ad-aware and norton, i disabled my wireless internet connection.

i then ran ad-aware and norton. i deleted everything they found. they each found lots.

i ran ad-aware till it came up clean. i ran Norton until it deleted everything it could, but there were things it couldn't get rid of.

i then did a search of all files that had been modified since i got infected. i deleted lots of temp files and anything else that didn't look like it belonged. etc.

i then loaded a few other detect-bad-things programs, ran them, deleted what they found.

i decided to try reconnecting my wireless connection. It would connect, but i would only get 'limited/no connectivity'. the same message one gets when connected to an encrypted network without the password...

clicking on Repair would tell me that i did not have a valid IP address.

then...

one thing that i found during my searching was newdotnet . i deleted its entire folder. but then my computer would show a message after restart that newdotnet.dll (or something similar) could not be found.

i looked around online and found that i needed to run the newdotnet uninstall program. i ran the uninstall program.

and my wireless connection worked again. indicating that somehow my lack of wireless connection and newdotnet were positively correlated somehow...

but. now that i had an internet connection, i discovered that firefox and all firefox files had completely disappeared from my computer.

a Search for 'firefox' returned Zero results.

[i've been surfing and posting etc on a housemate's computer, transfering my logs and downloads etc with one of those handy little data traveler things...]

it is at this point that i first posted on short-media.com .

the previous post about norton and the windows installer is still valid.

However, this is the update on firefox:

I re-installed firefox 1.5 .

i then tried to run it. this window appeared:

Close Firefox:
Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

The Task Manager, however, does not show firefox in 'Applications' or 'Processes'.

I then uninstalled and reinstalled. The same message appeared when i attempted to run Firefox.

So i just re-uninstalled Firefox.

What do you think is preventing Firefox from opening?

And another question. These are the items in my Add or Remove Programs Window that seem like maybe they shouldn't be there. Should any of these be removed?:

DoMore Size .95MB
MSXML4 Parser Size 1.24MB
Network Monitor Size .09MB
Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) No Size listed

Also. These two were in there previously:
Polar Bowler from Gateway (remove only) No Size listed
Slyder from Gateway (remove only) No Size listed

When i tried to remove them, an E-fax Messenger [which i did have installed] window appeared asking if I really wanted to delete E-fax Messenger. This is despite the fact that E-Fax Messenger had its own Listing on the Add/Remove Programs list.

So i clicked on Delete. I then received a message telling me that its files were in use and the program could not be removed.

However, it gave me the option of restarting and deleting upon restart. So i did. The programs are no longer listed in Add/Remove Programs and neither is E-fax Messenger.

Do you know if these were legitimately associated with E-Fax Messenger?

i hope that maybe any of all this information helps...

two more bits of information and questions.

my Windows Firewall has been turned Off. and when i open the Windows Firewall window, all of the options are faded. So i cannot turn it back on.

Since I got my computer a year and a half ago, I have never been able to turn Automatic Updates Off. similar to my current Windows Firewall screen, all of the options are faded preventing my changing them. The consequence of this is that, mostly when i am not at my computer, something decides that it is time to update and then things are downloaded and then my computer restarts itself. All without any action on my part. this does not please me at all. especially the whole restart and lose all running applications and data etc experience. but the complete lack of control thing is also very not cool. etc.

Is this standard in windows xp home edition? and either way, is there any way for me to turn off automatic updates?

again, thanks.

You said to Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass)

My Registry Editor shows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lsass

[with subfolders 'Enum' and 'Security']

Is that what i want to delete?

Same with:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass)

Mine shows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_lsass

[with subfolder '0000']

Is this also what i want to delete?

Just want a clarification before i start deleting registry files etc.

thanks.

Yes those are the entries that you want to delete. Lsass.exe is a crucial system file but the service should not appear in these keys. Don't forget about the entry for the 023 network monitor as well.

I'm sorry about all the problems you appear to be having now. It's sounds like a real bummer. You mentioned newdotnet. This program is a winsock (internet access) hijacker. You should look for any instances of it in the add/remove programs panel and uninstall them. Your last log is clean other than these 2 023 lines which are probably not even causing problems but I would really like to see them not be there.

As far as theses program are concerned:

DoMore Size .95MB
MSXML4 Parser Size 1.24MB
Network Monitor Size .09MB
Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) No Size listed

Only the windows installer is legit. I would uninstall the others. The network monitor program is what the 023 netmon.exe service is running under and my guess is it's malicious. After we do the registry edits and uninstall those programs I would like you to completely uninstall firefox once more and use windows explorer to see if the firefox folder still exists. If it does, delete it then reinstall the program. It's coming together. All in all it seems like it was a fairly bad attack and they can take time to recover from but I appreciate your patience.

Yes it is normal for windows to update itself automatically. It has a built in program that looks for updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com and when they're available it downloads them, though the automaticity (is this a word?) is adjustable as to what it can and can't do and what type of verbosity you receive, but it can be set to download and install them automatically.
You can turn off automatic updates by going to "control panel" and selecting the automatic updates icon.

Also after the regedits re-run hijack this and check the two 023 entries we talked about before and have hijack this fix them. Run another log and post it after you have done this so we can see if those services are gone from the log.

i could not delete:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_lsass

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_network_monitor

but i did delete the lsass and network monitor in the Services folder.

i Removed DoMore and MSXML4 Parser . Network Monitor could not be removed.

Firefox. I found and deleted firefox files that were still hanging around as a result of my install and uninstalls etc. Firefox now opens normally.

Automatic Updates. I know that it is supposed to allow me to adjust the settings. but that's the problem. it is set on Automatic and all of the options are faded which Prevents me from changing it to a more i'm-in-control setting. have you heard of that happening before? i realize that they are necessary due to windows' desperate need of help. but i want some control over how these updates occur, and at the moment i am denied that control.

Firewall. is still turned off. and the options are faded so i cannot turn it back on.

thanks again for all your help.

but i did delete the lsass and network monitor in the Services folder.

i Removed DoMore and MSXML4 Parser .

Firewall. is still turned off. and the options are faded so i cannot turn it back on.

thanks again for all your help.

i could not delete:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_lsass

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_network_monitor

but i did delete the lsass and network monitor in the Services folder.

That's good.

i Removed DoMore and MSXML4 Parser . Network Monitor could not be removed.

I'm not 100% sure what network monitor is. It may be legit. I'm trying to get more information on it.

Firefox. I found and deleted firefox files that were still hanging around as a result of my install and uninstalls etc. Firefox now opens normally.

That's good news. My thinking is that there were corrupted files sitting around somewhere.

I can't imagine malware causing you to lose the ability to work with windows update manually. Most malware will turn off windows update and set a registry key so you can't turn it back on. So this one is going to require some more research.

Firewall. is still turned off. and the options are faded so i cannot turn it back on.

This is normal because of this:

O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Firewall Monitor Service (NPFMntor) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe

You have the Symantec Firewall installed which disables the Windows firewall. Can't run 2 at once. Symantec's is better anyway. If you uninstalled Symantec Anti-Virus and the Firewall product you would be able to use the Windows Firewall.

thanks again for all your help.

No problem. Thank you again for your patience.

Please see all answers above and post another Hijack This log. :)

Log looks good! Are you still having problems? With the exception of Windows update. Good to see those dead services now gone :)

Let me know of any other issues you're having.

When Norton is Loading during the startup process, this series of windows appears:

Windows Installer:
Preparing to install...

then changes to

Windows Installer:
Please wait while Windows configures Norton AntiVirus 2005

Then this window appears:

Norton AntiVirus 2005:
Norton Anti-Virus 2005 does not support the Repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall.

Also. Running the trial version of pctools.com's Spyware Doctor [which detects things but won't fix them for you] shows:

I-Search Desktop Search Toolbar

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cmdService

Trojan.Dropper.Agent.TK

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate##DoNotAllowXPSP2

It also showed:
Backdoor.SdBot.ADS
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SVKP

but i was able to delete it.

aside from those Norton windows at startup, my computer seems fine.

OK. You could delete this entry:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cmdService

Using the registry editor like we did for the others. At this point I would run 2 online virus scanners. Run the Panda Active Scan from my signature below and also run the Trendmicro Housecall scan at housecall.trendmicro.com

After that it wouldn't hurt to download Ewido Anti-Malware from my signature below. Update the software and then run a full scan in safe mode. In all instances above let the software delete whatever it finds.

Last thing to do would be to uninstall then re-install Norton. The malware could have corrupted it in some way. After you have done all this let me know if you're still having problems. My thinking is that Ewido will clear out a lot of dead trojan stuff.

so i deleted one of the hidden files in my C: folder... and now my computer won't start up. it gets to the black Windows screen, then goes black as if it is going to continue, but then it starts all over again...

what am i supposed to do about that?

skywalker45

Reboot your PC. Begin tapping the F8 key once it reboots. Keep tapping the F8 key until the advanced boot options menu appears. You'll see safe mode at the top. You'll also see "last known good configuration that worked". Use the arrow keys to highlight that one and press enter. It should load the last good configuration which unfortunately means we might have been set back a little because some malware might be in those restore volumes. What file did you delete anyway? And Why? Was it an accident? I've done that before to. That's why it's important that when we're done we set the folder attributes back to hidden. :)

Once you get it running again you'll have to post another log.

last known good configuration that worked : did not work.

i loaded the xp restore disk. i ran fixmbr and fixboot .

this also had no impact on startup.

i'm not sure what i deleted... i kept finding bad programs/files... so i deleted it.

so i have no clue what to do next.

At this point I would recommend you visit the Emergency Help Forum:

http://www.short-media.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=8

Short of doing a repair install of Windows XP I don't know what else I can tell you to do. We need to get the PC back up but without knowing exactly what file/files you deleted it's going to be difficult to do in the SVT forum. So visit there and get some advice and come back when you get the PC back up. A repair install is possible without losing programs and settings. :)

i think just the I-Search Desktop Search Toolbar remains [in the registry in the folder 'cmdServices']. but this folder cannot be manually deleted.

It wouldn't hurt at this point to go to this site:

http://toolbar.isearch.com/uninstall/

Try their automated removal tool to remove the toolbar then post back and let me know what is going on. As far as your Hijack This log is concerned put a check next to the following and have Hijack This fix it:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

This entry has nothing to do with what is happening with you but it's just taking up space.

i deleted the useless hijack this entry that you told me to.

i also downloaded and ran the isearch uninstall program. it did not remove the isearch files from my registry. however, after downloading and running the uninstall, my scanner picked up Alexa on my computer... which i then deleted. my suspicion is that alexa was somehow associated with the isearch uninstall... etc.

so. how do we get isearch out of my registry?

You might try deleting cmdservices (isearch) while in safe mode. I-Search claims that nothing can remove their software except their uninstaller. Funny though how the isearch remover didn't work and then you saw Alexa related material. Can you tell me what other anti-spyware programs you have tried? Have you tried Spybot? If not then download it from my signature, update it, and then run a full scan with it in safe mode. You should do spybot even if you find you can delete cmdservices in safe mode. Anyway try both of these things.

deletion in safe mode is also results in the message Cannot delete cmdService: Error while deleting key

Sbybot detected nothing.

Can you post the complete path to the key and list it's contents please (those would be in the right hand pane). I'm going to try to simulate some kind of fix on my PC. I would specifically like to know where this I-Search is living and it's particular symptoms when you're using your PC. That might give me some more information. An internet search on this stuff is not turning up as many usable results as I would like.

Supposedly Ad-Aware has a tool that will remove it and I'm researching this possibility.

You might also be able to uninstall the toolbar from the Add/Remove programs utility under Control Panel. Check there as well.

I've also been told that the i-search toolbar uninstaller works but unfortunately leaves the files on your system. I can see this is going to be a toughie :)

I-search is now gone...

for future reference, the path was

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\cmdService

and there were 6 files in the cmdService folder.

But.

This is what i did:

I discovered that one of my options when right-clicking on the folder was 'Permissions...' . So I went into Permissions, gave the Administrator, and the Administrator only, full rights. I then restarted in safe mode and logged in as Administrator. I turned off System Restore. Then I deleted it. And it worked.

Since then I've restarted several times and it's still absent from the registry. Also, pctools's spyware doctor now shows no trace of it.

So. All scans show that I'm clean.

Thanks tons for all the time you've put into fixing my mess.

No problem and you're welcome! That's what we do here. I'm only sorry it took so long. I was actually going to attempt the fix on my home PC with permissions set to administrator also. That was the next step. I'm glad you're clean. If you need any more help just let us know. I will now close this thread. If you need it re-opened just PM one of our moderators and we'll re-open it.
