Hi, I would be extremely grateful for your expert help please. Some days ago I was hit with Smitfraud & Spy Sheriff, I seem to have cleared those (I hope), but ever since I've been plagued by YYY102, YYY65 and various other pop-ups. I've tried to follow a similar thread on here to try to get rid, but can't seem to generate a log file with L2mfix. I've left it running for about 15 minutes or more, but no log file in notepad appears. When I look at the report in the folder it seem's to have come to a halt at 'Files Found are not all bad files:' Anyway, thought I'd better leave it to people who know what they're doing. I use 'Trend Internet Security' for my firewall & antivirus, together with 'Ad-aware SE Pro', Spybot v1.4 & Xoftspy (Is the latter any good? by the way.) I don't know if it matters, but my computer is profiled for 2 users. So, here is my Hjt log.

Thanks for the response SpywareShooter. I was unable to find the file 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\Lsas.exe' anywhere on the system. By the way, should I have turned off System Restore before I worked through the steps?

[STEP 2]

Fixed all entries successfully.

[STEP 3]

Deleted all files except the 'Lsas.exe' which doesn't seem to exist. Used Killbox to delete 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\ir82l5lo1.dll' on reboot. There's a similar named file in there also named 'ir84l5lq1.dll'. Is that significant?

[STEP 4]

Rebooted, reconnected to the internet, still plenty of pop-ups around. Here's the new HijackThis log:

Hi, while SpywareShooter is offline and you are online, can you do the following:

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Hello there! trogan thanks for coming back to me. I tried L2mfix before I posted, and got the results you'll see in my first post on this thread. Any idea why?

You may have an older version.

Just to make sure, could you Delete your current L2Mfix file/folder and then follow the instructions above. I'd like us to try it one more time before using other tools. :)

Close any browsers and programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. It will process then start. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

That O20 file's looking good, it's missing for the first time. And even better still, NO pop-ups after days of being plagued by 'em.

Thankyou so much both of you for your invaluable help. I'm that pleased, that having been a Derby County supporter for 60 years I might even change my allegiance to United. Thanks once again.

No problem

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here (http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm) and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/) which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Spybot Search & Destroy. (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Read the article So How Did I get Infected In The First Place (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=4959)

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here. (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Hello again, Just to tidy things up. Although my profile was clear, when running in my wife's profile it was still generating browser pop-ups. Then Trend came up with the following warning when I brought up Windows Explorer :

Real-time Scan
Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security has detected a virus, spyware application, or other Internet threat, and performed the action specified.

Infected file: C:\Installer.exe
Virus name: ADW_LOOK2ME.Y
Action: Denied Access

Obviously a file we'd missed somehow because the date on it was 25/1/06, anyway, I managed to delete it and both profiles seem to be to be perfectly clear now. However just to make sure, here is the Hjt log generated whilst running in my wife's profile. I wonder if you'd be kind enough to have a look at it and tell me if there is anything nasty I should delete, please.

A few things that needs to be cleaned.

Download the PurityScan uninstaller. (http://www.purityscan.com/uninstall.html).

Click on the link given and download the tool to your desktop.

Close ALL open browsers and programs

Next, open the file and enter the 4-character code shown. Once the code is entered correctly, click Uninstall.

Reboot your computer and post a new HJT log :)

Ah! I forgot to mention that a scan with Xoftspy picked a file up it said was purityscan. But being as Adaware and Spybot and running the file in Virusscan.Jotti never came up with anything, I left it just in case. Anyway, ran oiunstl, rebooted and here's the log.

These are the Jotti online scan results for that 'C:\Program Files\neam\odaa.exe', haven't a clue what it is, only that it was created at 11am today. There also seems quite a lot of dodgy files in my wife's Local Settings/ Temp folders as well, like
!update.exe, sskdr.dll, etc. Should I try and delete them all, or is it best I create a list for you to look at first?

In that case, I think we should remove that entry (O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Emuu] "C:\Program Files\neam\odaa.exe" -vt ndrv)

It is safe to remove files in the Temp folder. An easier option is to do the following:

Download CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp) and install it, then run it.

Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
Close when finished.

==

Go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and look for the following

neam
Emuu

If found, please uninstall.
==

Open HijackThis
- Click the Do a system scan only button
- Check the following entries (below)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Emuu] "C:\Program Files\neam\odaa.exe" -vt ndrv

- Close ALL open windows
Click Fix Checked
==

Find and Delete the following:

C:\Program Files\neam << this folder
==

Reboot and post a new HJT log :)

Let me know how things are.

Cleared all the dross from the Temp files. Was unable to locate the neam/Emuu file in add/remove programmes list, but managed to locate and uninstall a prog called 'Clickspring' with the JV16 Power Tools app, this was the only hidden prog with the same date/time. Removed the neam folder.

Everything seems to be ok on both profiles. The only thing I've noticed is that anything that requires Java to load, is extremely slow now. Could it be something to do with all this protection I have running in the background now? The Ewido app seems particularly resource hungry.

Do you have any idea what this might be? It's being kicking around in Program Files since 2003:

Everything seems to be ok on both profiles. The only thing I've noticed is that anything that requires Java to load, is extremely slow now. Could it be something to do with all this protection I have running in the background now? The Ewido app seems particularly resource hungry.
You don't actually need Ewido on your computer. Normally, it would be advised to uninstall it after its done its job.

Do you have any idea what this might be? It's being kicking around in Program Files since 2003:

O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" -d -f "%ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.ini (file missing)
It's seems to be legit. See here (http://http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/rpcapd.exe-7147.html)

If you don't recognise the program, then look for WinPcap in Add/Remove and Uninstall it.

You can get rid of this line with HJT - it may help your java problem

I seem to have lost Java VM altogether now, since the last fix. ADSLguide is telling me I need to d/l it.

Problem solved, I'd cleared restore and created a new point after we'd cleaned up, so I restored and uninstalled Ewido and the Java VM is back to normal (But loading faster since Ewido's gone). Thank's for your time and patience, you all provide a fine service. I'll keep an eye on things, and come back to you if I run in to problems.

Well, it's been 7 days now and all scans keep coming up clean, so I think it's safe to say that everything bad on the system has been 'knocked on the head'. I'll know where to come next time I'm in trouble. Thank's again.

Cool :)

If you have any more problems, post back.
