My friend recently reformatted her laptop due to some problems (i don't really have the details..) and after reformatting and reinstalling WinXP, she has encoutered these major problems - No internet access, and errors when she starts applications. I tried to run 'msconfig' but it doesn't start, and the system registery is inaccessible. The following error appears whenever we try to open the 'systems' icon in the Control Panel. Firstly, the cmd window pops up. When we try to exit it, the following error pops up.

Error:
Run a DLL has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Error signature
AppName:rundll32.exe
AppVer:5.1.2600.0
ModName:Unknown
ModVer:0.0.0.0
Offset:80000002

Exception Info: 0xc0000005
Flags:0x000000000
Address:0xfffffff80000002

It tells us to send an error report to microsoft, but since there is no net connection, we can't. The message also states that the following file will be attached. C:\Docume~1\Owner\Locals~1\Temp\Werb.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Please help. If there's any more information that you guys need, please let me know. We'd really appreciate your help since we're in the middle of doing school projects. :)

I had similar problems when I first installed XP. I found that Service Pack 2 fixed all of my issues. I realise you won't be able to download from Microsoft direct onto her laptop, but I rang my local Computer Shop and they had spare copies of SP2 which they gave me. If you have any trouble locating a copy let me know, I can burn it for you and maybe snail mail it.
As for the msconfig, I think that both Windows 2000 & XP don't have the tool installed by default, however if you go to this site:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html
you can download it.
I hope this helps.

I just realised that you are also having trouble with your rundll32.exe file. The same site that I have listed in my first reply for msconfig download, also has the rundll32.exe file and instruction on how to install it onto your system.
Hope this helps.

I also found this information on another site regarding the error message:
The appcomp.txt file is created when there is a conflict between programs,
drivers, etc. It is a reporting file used when uploading error reports to
Microsoft.

If you do not want to see appcomp.txt again, disable Error Reporting.

Open System Properties...
Start | Run | Type: sysdm.cpl | Click OK |
Advanced tab | Error Reporting button | Check:
Disable Error Reporting | Check: But notify
me when critical errors occur | OK | Apply | OK

Disable Error Reporting
[[Select to disable error reporting. When this option is selected, error
reports will not be generated.]]

But notify me when critical errors occur
[[Select this option to have Windows notify you when a critical error
occurs, even if you have disabled Error Reporting.]]

Hope this helps.

Hmm....thanks for your reply... Sad to say, my friend said she couldn't wait and bought a new laptop instead. That's another way to solve the problem I guess (though it's much much more expansive), but thanks for you help! Really appreciate it. Guess there are still people that don't believe that you guys actually help people for free... :)

By the way, what did your friend do with the laptop?

You can actually copy msconfig.exe from another machine and use it on Win2K as well. :)

Strange that they would omit for one version innit.

I've never understood it. The only thing I can figure is that Win2K was back before the "home" (Win95, Win98, etc) and "business" (WinNT) Windows lines converged. Maybe they figured admins would prefer that users couldn't have such control over their workstation. :aol:

Damn, more landfill....at least it feels kind of nice to trash the suckers when they give you a hard time. Hopefully, we can help you a bit sooner next time cos it really was probably just needing service pack 2.

PS - If they really piss you off, it feels mighty good to smash em up good before you throwem in the trash!!!
