Hi, Im trying to build the best PC ever, Money isnt a worry, help me design it and once its built ill give u the awesome specs!!!
You came to the right place... We need to know a bit about what you want.
CPU preference - AMD, Intel
Memory Requirements - 1 GB? 2 GB
Money isn't a worry? $3000, $5000, $9000, &15,000??? We can help you build a $50,000 PC but why?
What do you need to do with this PC? Game? Fold (http://www.joinfolding.com/)? Drafting/ AutoCAD? Movie editing.... all of these come into play when building a PC.
Dow much hard drive space... Do you need built in data backup (RAID 1 or 5)?
MORE INFO and we'll be more than happy to help!!!!
What Im attempting to do is build a PC able to handle the most demanding things possible while sacraficing nothing, im building in simple. THE PERFECT PC. Money isnt an issue because I have an income of about 2k a month and spend maybe 500 bucks... that 1500 dollars to blow a month... and Im not going anywhere. I want to be able to game, type, movie/music edit. and Yes sadly i know how to draft using auto cad after 10 credits worth of HS Technical Drafting.(4 of which were college credits earned). I want to get the ultimate PC, the fastest, best looking, most overclockable divine machine ever thought... and I think everyone here has always wondered what the best could do, hence i need ure help and once im done, Im going to stick what the baby can do here.. Mmmm

No PCI-Express slots. Best you can do is an SMP Opteron rig on the nForce4 Professional chipset with a 7800GTX.

This is going to get incredibly expensive... I read the whole thread already, but still - not having a budget is asking for financial problems. Shouldn't you save some money in case of emergency?

Look, basically the sky's the limit. You're not going to get any cohesive answers unless you set yourself a budget for us to work with. Like Q said, we could spend $15,000 of your money or $50,000. $1500 a month may seem like a lot, but not if we spec out a $20,000 computer.
So let's be realistic. First of all, your goals are to have the best computer money can buy. That's not really a realistic goal because I could send you to sun.com and have you spend a million dollars. Let's try to whittle it down to a range, like "i want to spend under $5000" or "i want to spend between $2000 and $4000".

Don't forget, whatever is big and bad now probibly won't be in 6mos.
Don't forget, whatever is big and bad now probably won't be in 6mos.Or tomorrow, for that matter.
I'd say under a $10,000. Any thing over that is WAY over kill. Also realize that a gaming PC will take you in a different direction than a Video Editor and in a different direction from a AutoCAD PC.
Gamers want a kick but Graphic card (ATI Radeon 1900XT for $600), a drafter may want a killer workstation card (Quadro FX4500 for $1800).
A Workstation may want tons of disk space but running RAID 5. RAID 5 on a gamers rig is really a waste. The gamer would want RAID 0.
We cannot create a "#1 PC of all time"... we can only build a "jack of all trades, master of none" or a PC that is good at one thing.
I guess it’s like a vehicle. You want the best vehicle, money is not an issue. Well, do you want a Hummer military specs, rolls Royce, a Lamborghini.... they all are #1 in one way or another but the hummer will lose in speed to the Lamborghini... the Lamborghini cannot tow a semi...
Listen I understand how not setting a limit may seem silly, I have plenty of money saved up, you guys need not worry. As for the computer... It must be able to fit into a regular case, I dont want a room sized computer I was a regular looking computer ( Obviously there are a few bendable rules) but i dont want no full room sized computer.. think monster garage?(if uve seen it) It must llook as normal as possible while pwning all others.
About the hummer thing. Im sure if you all work together you can make a "jack of all trades" Like that truck with eth viper engine ( very fast) and could pull a semi! yay!

So if he insists on building The Ultimate PC that does everything better than any other computer, with no budget, you'll help him pick the components? And what about when he comes back in a month saying his Ultimate PC freezes up in Halo, but works fine in AutoCAD and it's all our fault for wasting his $10,000?

It's his money and his responsibility regarding how he spends it. My point was that saying "nobody is going to help you any further" is a little strong. Saying that you are unable to help without having a clearer idea of the ultimate objective is reasonable and fair. See the difference? :)

I think that's a great starting point. I'd finish that off with two 8ms 19" LCDs (providing SLI works with dual monitors now, I'm not sure if drivers have fixed that yet).
I'd also get fancy caching RAID controller with 4x Seagate NCQ SATAII drives in whatever capacity is available. The 7200rpm rotational speed will spare your ears, and the fancy controller set at RAID 0 or RAID 0+1 will give you the speed you need. You might use the array for programs and storage, and maybe a single small WD Raptor drive for Windows. Not sure if the separate Raptor will net you any performance gains or not, though. Tex?

ancy controller set at RAID 0 or RAID 0+1 will give you the speed you need Do NOT do a RAID 0 array for someone who may not have computer hardware skills. (Well, I guess the recipient does not have skills, or he'd be building a computer himself.) RAID 0 can be very easy to brake and even under normal conditions doubles the chances of data loss/files corruption.

No I think it's just a young guy that doesn't know very much about computers (which is perfectly okay, don't get me wrong), and is expecting too much from a custom rig. I don't want to sound mean, but he does need to do some research and know what he's getting into.

Just fill in approved ram, graphics, and hard disk(s). Board is EATX so be aware when looking for a case.

That's why I'm thinking 0+1 would be a good idea. All the speed, plus redundancy.
What I would do myself (since I'm governed by the laws of economics ;D) is a compromise. I'd use my "old" 80gb WD 8mb cache drive for Windows, and two new fancypants SATA drives in RAID 0 for programs and storage. I'd have anything crucial automatically backed up (like photos) on a partition on the Windows drive by a piece of software. Or, if I had one more hard drive, I'd have Ghost back up both Windows and my crucial files to that drive.

I think you'd still get more for your money going custom, but a prebuilt has many advantages: warranty, someone to call if anything breaks, and less pressure for you to get everything going.
Yea but assuming that this guy doesnt know too much about pc's, then it would be alot easier to buy a manufactured one.

prebuilt computers are NAME ONLY! Your paying for some stupid sticker or case that has a name on it.
If you want to spend thousands of $$ on a name, let me go take a crap in a box and give it a name. I'll be glad to take that money off ya.
If you want to get into that whole maintenance and tech support thing, there are hundereds of forums across the web just like this one to find help in on virtually every computer catagory known to man.
I'm definately not saying he should build a multi-$1000's systme himself if he's never built one before, but for the love of god...don't turn him into another name brand buyer hack that ends up with some sort of story about how X company screwed him over on his PC.
This is a great thread.... My setup will include triple monitors at 42" or so each ;)
I'll post later after work when I am done researching :P
