I went to get on the old Icrontic one day and saw a plain screen with the message "In yer box". I can't remember if there was anything else. A few minutes later I couldn't connect at all. After several days had passed I Googled the names of some of the old Icrontic folks and that led me to AmdMB's (now pcperspective) website.

It was ALL gone...

Icrontic wasn't the only one hit by these hackers at the time. Thrax and I Googled around and found a handfull of other sites hit by them as well.

Yeah, that team hit a <i>bunch</i> of tech websites in a relatively short period of time. The Googleverse was crawling with the little bastards, but I think Icrontic was the only one in tenuous enough a position to topple, sadly.

Replaced front page. Everything else looked ok.
Server started acting funny. Rebooted.
Bam. Whole things when down in a pyre of hellish flames. Everything gone.
Looked for backups and found... basically nothing.

I guess, in the end, the community did well with a virtual reboot anyway. :)

There's no good way to say this... Icrontic's original owner passed away some months ago. Here is the related thread (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22333) :(

It's quite a long saga, actually, when you try to explain everything that has happened since Icrontic... a very rich history full of both the amazing and the tragic.

This reminds me, my S-M FAQ (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39523) is long overdue... I'd better get crackin' on it!

Icrontic holds a special place with me (and Keith (Mortin) also even though he is no longer with us). I found Icrontic when I was probably 14 or 15, at that point I gamed and that was it. I wanted to mess around with computers a little but wasn't sure about them at all, they were still a mystery.

I found Icrontic through the 'cool link' portion of overclockers.com. I immediatly felt at home there is what I do remember. The place was fun and informative at the same time. I learned quite a bit about computers just reading the forums and Pauls FAQ, I didn't have a abit board at that point but it was still informative.

After a while I started posting news and working on a general FAQ for the site. It was something that never really took off. Eventually I became an admin on the forums. At that time I have been a member of the site for probably 2/3 years and tried as best at I could to help the site however I could. At that point I'll be honest, I was probably 17 and not able to do it right. I could install vbulletin mods and moderate the forums though.

I gradually became inactive on the site and forums just because I found other things to occupy my time (computer games were my weakness ;)). Then icrontic was hacked and Keith sold the site on ebay. At that point I attempted to get back into the but my heart really wasn't in it. I eventually faded out of the site again and it sad semi-dormate for the past year or so.

Citrix just sold the site again and the timing was right for me. I've been working full time for a while (and I'm single :D) so the means were there to be able to purchase the site. I've had the bug to do some coding and get back into the website for a few months now. Everything just sort of fell into place. I've rambled on long enough now (sorry I'm a few beers * a couple jager bombs into celebrating my new website already tonight).

But to wrap up I'm not sure I would even be into computers like I am now, or have gone to college for 2 years for CIS (even though I am a business major at a different school now :P) had it not been for icrontic. I love short-media and everyone here, don't get me wrong. But Icrontic will always be special for me.

icrontic was pathetic towards the end of its days or something? or do you mean that you were upset when it was hacked.

It was hacked by a Icrontic admin. And then citrix wouldnt cut his butt loose because he was developing a gaming site for Icrontic as a branch off deal.. He hacked THIS site also and was reading the admins private forum section. I wanted him gone. Citrix didnt. So I split. I am sorry but integrity and honesty still mean something to me. Maybe not to everyone but it still means a lot with me anyway. My agreement with citrix when we started the new Icrontic was that I was in charge of the site. The little phucking ahole that we had coding the new Icrontic website hacked both our sites by using a password hacking program to steal shortys password and he was reading the admins forum and posting their private forum out on the internet). I banned his sorry azz as soon as I found out. But citrix couldnt let him go as he wanted the gaming site finished coding and stuff. End of story. I was out. Really pretty simple. What happened to Icrontic after that day has nothing to do with me in any way or form. I bet I have not visited more then 20 times since.

No it was pathetic to visit the site knowing what it was at one time and see that it had been 27 days since the last post in general hardware. When we used to get 100 in one day for example. 47 days since the last post in hard drives etc... Thats pathetic. And it wasnt just me that left Icrontic. It was MOST the serious hardware guys. And for a good reason.

But in the end the result was pathetic and it had NOTHING to do with me leaving. There was no good hardware guys left. So some of my posts may of seemed harsh but you had a lot of just crap being posted. I mean I would read some of the "answers" given to problems (and I use the term "answer" in a very loose sorta term here) and was just like ... WTF??? OMG !!!!

The only section getting posts was the off topic section. I was a hardware guy. I wasnt into the "babe" thread and that was the only thing on the site getting posts anymore. Sorta evolved into a bunch of little kids chatting. And thats fine but thats not what Icrontic started as or what it was about when I was there.

I didnt mean this as an attack on anyone! It was just sad watching a once vibrant active HARDWARE site (with serious skilled hardware guys) sink into the toilet like that.

Cheers

Tex

Tex
25 Feb 2006, 11:51am
Nah, Tex seemed kinda upset that Icrontic existed without him,?

Yeah it was run into the ground until the only thing left was kids posting in OT mostly.

Icrontic ceased to be a hardware site. So I didnt visit often. I certainly wasnt upset that it went into the toilet. Wasnt my fault in any way or form. The site just went into another direction that focused on kids chatting in off topic, a babe thread and a adult picture section versus computer hardware and software. And that had nothing to do with me.

No I wasnt upset just sad. Because I remember the old Icrontic.

Tex, you said it all for me. Before I started at Icrontic/Apushardware (1999) and Paul Howland's KT motherboard guides there, the most advanced hardware feat for me had been one hard drive upgrade and adding RAM modules. I cut my teeth at Icrontic learning from the hardware gurus - such as you. I quit Icrontic a long time ago completely just for the reasons you stated about the focus changing. Hardware just went to sleep there.

Tex
25 Feb 2006, 6:08pm

Sorry but you are way off the mark. Perhaps I am, perhaps I'm not. Either way, I respect your opinion. But here's where my perspective comes from:

I joined Icrontic before it was Icrontic, when it was still "Apushardware", 1999, if I remember correctly. Approximately 2001 (2000?) I became a moderator there, at such position I remained until the big crash in early 2003. After that, under new site ownership, I was not staff but still maintained membership and was active until sometime in 2004. I still kept popping back in every now and then to check things out. It just seemed to me that site was taking a pretty steep slide into a nondescript social hangout, which is just fine, but not of interest to someone looking for a computer hardware community.

A lot of the OC guys split off to xtremesystems.org. Some just grew
up and got a real life and moved on I guess. (grin)

Most still hang here. We still in a day do not get near the pure hardware posts here that Icrontic did when I was a mod there and it was at it's prime. Thats why I post at several sites also but have so many friends here I still check in once or twice a day. So much of this site revolves around folding now AND THATS A COOL THING ! But I must admit I miss the pure hardware focus at times. Man Icrontic on a good day would have as many posts just about raid and hard drives as we still get in all the hardware sections here now in a day. And I AM NOT knocking S-M.
