My wife is now up to 10 peafowl. Most are still young, but we bought an adult trio (2 peahens, 1 peacock) a few months ago.

First picture is the male (peacock) when we got him. He had already dropped his tail feathers. Second picture is a couple of weeks ago. He was showing off for the ladies. :D

I dated a girl for a little while that had a male & female peafoul (I guess, I called the both peacocks). All I remember is they were loud & didn't play nice with the dogs.

They are absolutely gorgous though.

I see the Tennessee ranch continues to grow. Any plans for an Ark yet? Beautiful birds, Bill. I hope you can put up with the horrible racket they make.

So, what's the tally of all the critters you've got wandering around the property ( to include inside as well )?

They are great for alerting you to intruders. I've heard they taste just like chicken too...;D

Only Noah would intrude where Bill lives. (Yes, that is a compliment. Beautiful property.)

Well...I've heard from several people that peacocks are extremely noisy, but so far they have been pretty quiet. I'm sure that will change when the "mating season" gets here in Spring.

Leo: As for the total count, it's considerably less than it once was due to dogs, racoons and opossum.

Here's what I think I have left:

10 peafowl
4 ducks (lost 4 this week)
2 guinea
23 chickens (had close to 75 at one time)
5 cats
1 dog

Springtime is coming, so I'll be putting up some fencing and replenishing my waterfowl stock. :)

So, erm, you own the ducks too? ;)

Are those a pair of peahens on the right in the display photo? If so, they're quite innocuous looking compared to their male counterparts.

I am so glad to see I'm not the only one that has a passion for peacocks and hens. I have about 8 of them running around my yard. They are not fenced in so they tend to roam around the neighbourhood, but always return home to eat and roost.
I found the only time they really make a noise is when they arrive for their food. Man can they perform!! And if we don't come come outside to feed them they will come into the house to look for us.

MrBill you seem to have a different variety to mine. GHoosdum as with most birds the chicks don't look like much, it's the guys that strut their stuff :)
These pics show that off quite nicely

The lone peacock in the second picture we have named Johnny Bravo. He is a fine speciman and really knows how to show off. He just loves my wife and follows her around everywhere. Typical Guy!

I also have a family of guinea fowl. They are a bit stupid and I think if they didn't breed so sucessfully, they would all get wiped out. Every week one goes missing in the neighbourhood somewhere. Free Lunch! I wouldn't even say they really belong to me. They arrive to eat when I feed the peacocks and roost in a tree in my back yard at night. Otherwise I never really see them.
Which is probably just as well. They ugly buggers and quite useless.

Although sometimes I don't think Johhny Bravo is too bright either. He is obviously flashing the wrong bird in the last picture.

Yes, the hens are dull looking.

Those three in my second picture are Blue-Pied. Yours look like full India Blue....very pretty.

I have a pair of whites and some other cross-breeds. When I hit the lottery, I'll get some Java Greens. ;)

Expensive??
As far as peafowl go, yes the Java Greens are expensive. It wouldn't be unusual to pay $1000 for a quality adult pair.

I would venture to guess they do taste like chicken. However, like Winga, I'm not thinking about eating them. :D

Beautiful pictures, guys. :)

When my cousin was a teenager he had some Guinea hens he kept at my uncle's farm. They'd sit up in a tree as nice as can be, but would carry on like all get-out whenever anyone drove down the lane. They were better for security purposes than the coon hounds out in the yard. :ninja:

I just had to revive this thread!!

It's after 5 in the afternoon here and the sun is beginning to set. My wife called me outside to look at all the birds that had arrived to feed with the peacocks.
I was blown away by what I saw. The bottom of our garden is full of birds. I counted 17 guinea fowl and 7 peacock/hens.

We in mid winter here (you wouldn't say so looking at the grass) so I think food is getting harder to find for the guinea fowl and we are seeing more families coming together to feed. I took these pictures less than an hour ago.

The males dropped their tail feathers just before winter. They are now almost completely grown back and soon they will be strutting their stuff trying to impress the ladies with their plumage :D

These first two pictures manage to show some of them. They hard to nail down as they keep running around all over the place.

We use to have a lot of peacocks -- or peafowls back in India. Those things were wild and loud. I tried to touch one when I was little and it chased me around my house. I don't get too close since then....

Winga

Well ours don't chase us around yet :D You can see by my shadow I was pretty close when I snapped this pic. She was very obliging and posed long enough for the shot :) The male is in the second pic. Huge difference in colour and plumage.

Of course the guinea fowl just run around all over the place and have to be chased to the bottom terrace sometimes to show them where the food is. Man those birds are dumb. Almost as dumb as my Pug...did I mention ugly too?

Great pics guys! We have a few wild peacock running around our town.
City hall has put up warning signs along the areas where the birds frequent.

>>>>>>>>>>> PEACOCK CROSSING<<<<<<<<<<<<<
We also have quite a few Sandhill cranes now.
I came here in 1978 and there was one pair of Sandhill cranes in the whole county..
Now there's got to be 40-50 pairs. I see them almost everyday going to work or coming home.

Nice pics Winga! Guinea are one of the ugliest birds around....especially the males which have the larger helmet on their head.

I wonder if peafoul tastes like turkey? They have some resemblances....
