:nudge:
I was just wondering how you all feel and personally envision this Sci-Fi future we will possibly create in the not to distant future!??
Robots, Androids, Starships(faster than light! and then some!), AI, Rat and Human hybrids!, Internet Chips in the Brain!(with all the spyware and trojans you can shake a stick at:rolleyes2 , colonies on the moon - mars - titan etc:clap:
I think the next hundred years will actually be rather slow in terms of growth and new technology. I think it will mainly be experimentation and advancement upon existing technology really. After about one-hundred years of sustained industrial growth and then about 30 years of computer breakthrough, we're due for a lower period.
I believe the opposite.
Despite the rapid and remarkable advance of PCs, they're all still built on the same basic premise as computers 25 years ago.
We're due up for some real innovation.

I think there is more uncertainty, insecurity and stress nowadays.
The future will be harder but with better graphics.

In about 50 more years, rapidly increasing use of energy will leave us either stranded without the means to continue using our vehicles, or a breakthrough will occur. I seriously doubt that hydrogen fuel cell technology will be the breakthrough here. Perhaps a significantly higher yielding solar cell coupled with higher capacity batteries, based on nanotechnology, will be the answer (there is already sign of an impending breakthrough in this field). Perhaps nanotech will be the answer to a lot of problems. I think that increasing efficiency in other arenas (a modern example would be CFL and LED instead of incandescent and halogen lighting) will mean that the residential energy usage load will taper off, but commercial and automotive will not.
I think that technological innovation will increase to the limit of human capacity in the next 100 years. All the while, human capacity will increase to the breaking point, and many more people will begin having psychological malfunctions because they will be incapable of handling the increasing complexity of life in a technologized society. Once digital storage is absolutely perfected, I think a lot of people will begin augmenting their brain capacity by sticking in things like extra HDD space more RAM.
After we reach the limit of human capacity, I believe that the advances in technology that are achieved after that point will be achieved by computers that take design to the next level in an ever-increasing spiral. By 2200, even the most complex and intelligent non-augmented humans will be simply users of the technology of which they won't truly understand the functionality. Clarke's axim will come to pass - our capability as a species will by then probably advance to the level of what is considered "magic" to current humans, and even be essentially magic to most humans of the future.
Oh, and Thelemech, I haven't noticed you around before. Welcome to the forum and the foldin team! :fold:

In the future, I will be dead.

I think that quantum computing will come to pass in the near future (all things relative, 50yrs is near comparitively) and size will continue to diminish while capacities will soar. I envision matrix storage in crystaline forms where the arrangement of crystaline molecules will constitute the storage.
The loss of petroleum will force the development of alternative fuel sources such as higher capacity batteries and workable and affordable fuel cells. Anti gravity will become a reality most likely within the next 100 years and as a result artificial gravity will also become possible thereby allowing for FTL travel.
Within the next 200 years zero-point energy will become feasible as will atomic manipulation (manipulation of an atoms base structure adding or removing electrons, neutrons and protons thus allowing atoms to be remade) allowing for matter transmission not of the actual item but more of a "fax" copy, great for inanimate objects but not so great for animate ones.
I think we need to come up with some completely new stuff. Most of todays "new" technology is just big improvements from existing stuff. I'd like to see 3d tv's being used (ive seen them online, i mean in actual everyday implementation).
and maybe the perfect OS....wait that will never happen

I think 50 years might be a conservative estimate (http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/10/29/HNquantambreakthrough_1.html)

 GHoosdum- Thank you for the wellcome Have you ever investigated the Singularity Institute?- you may find it interesting.
We will definetly have to come up with new ways of harnessing power - especially with all of the proposed tech that we will be building. It wil have to be capable of massive power output, reliability and something that does not kill us or mutate us into blobs!
I was watching "how Bill S saved(or changed?) the World" on AE months ago when I saw ?Steve Jobs? of all people! commenting on how in the next ten years he would have an internet chip embedded in his mind. Now I love the idea of a " beneficial" Borg concept of human- but does anyone here believe that in ten years the technolgy will be secure enough to keep Spyware and the new media enhanced Trojan horse will not be infecting your mind?! or your kids?!!! YOU MUST BUY THREE SPRITES BY LUNCH.exe! or some other badware programm of the future!
Let' s make sure of it - then.
Although I believe that we are still in the computer/digital information revolution I see the beginings of a far more pivotal and world altering revolution beginning- The AI era :cool2:
Talking of 3d TV there is a interesting device called the Heliodisplay that has been developed. I have heard mixed comments but some companies propose to make it the TV of the future - once it has been enhanced.
Thank you for the comments more would be appreciated.
One reason I began this thread is for research for a novel I am working on.

That is interesting, and it goes into quite a bit of depth on the topic I hit upon. I'll have to dig a little deeper into their site. Thanks, Thelemech.

I think AI is going to change how we do everything. Everyone will have their own personal secretary on their PDA or what have you that essentially manages the mundane aspects of your life like ensuring all your bills are paid, doing your taxes, negotiating and scheduling appointments, etc. It'll be plugged into an always-on Internet connection and be able to do searching and intelligent filtering.
"Al, find me a time for that new sci-fi movie this afternoon". Based on your preferences that it's learned, It'll figure out the most likely set of movies you're talking about and the closest theaters to your location. Or resteraunts, or whatever. The possibilities are limitless.

Amazon.com does this very well already. Based on the things I've viewed, looked for, bought, have ratings for, etc.... it has a decent list of things I want to read, watch, buy and play with
