If you can tell her with a straight face that you'll need a blood sacrifice to fix her CD-ROM, I'll give you a dollar.

I was told "brain" today, the usage was something like...

"I plugged the yellow telephone line from the CPU to the brain"

Her meaning was...

"I plugged the ethernet cord from the dsl modem to the computer"

My god I am going to go insane.

The incredibly stupid CRAP I hear day in and day out is driving down my last nerve. It's not the repeated issues of crap from Verizon. I have come to the realization that Verizon is actually a great company. THESE PEOPLE ARE JUST MORONS!

But ok I can deal with screwing up the names of basic computer parts I can see why. But not knowing if you have a firewall installed, not knowing that P2P downloading WILL effect your internet performance, and not knowing the the internets performance is not a measure of your computers performance AND SO MUCH MORE THAT I AM NOT MENTIONING. Is crazy.

Why do they even own a computer? It's just like vehicles, you must change your oil every so often. Going 20K miles without changing your oil is gonna **** your **** up! Just like visiting stupid porn sites will do the same thing!

I just don't get it, maybe it's becuase most my family has some understanding of computers. Except my dad, but guess what he does? HE DOESN'T TOUCH A COMPUTER! arg anyways.

I can get behind the tower term, although I've heard "Hard Drive", "CPU", "Modem", "Brain" but never "CD-Rom". I've even heard it refered to as the "Power Supply".

my mom calls it a modem..im like what???

I point to the actual cable modem and ask here what it is..she is usually speechless. I almost have her trained to say tower, and sometimes if im lucky computer.

What's distressing is to hear a network manager or system administrator call a computer a "CPU". That tells me the person knows how to get computers to talk to each other but does not know hardware much at all beyond keyboards, mice, cables, and switches. But then, I know hardware fairly well, but the most complicated networking I've ever done was configure a simple seven-computer office LAN.

Tower was (and is still) used to differentiate a case that sits on a shorter side, as opposed to a desktop case.

Tower denotes vertical architecture so why not call a horizontal case a "ranch" case? Then again maybe not...

Maybe you can come home and fix my DVD-ROM because it's slower but should be faster.

if a desktop computer is a cd-rom, then what would a dvd-rom be? a laptop maybe?
