Good point. US Dollars. Post edited.

I feel really bad about having to charge a reg. fee, but this thing is gonna cost some major coin to throw together . We have to rent furniture, buy some more equipment for infrastructure, drive people to and from the airport, etc.

We're currently hoping to get some industry sponsorships. I plan on offering a door prize, so you'll get SOMETHING for your money, besides the honor of meeting your fellow short-medians face to face ;)

Pseudonym has a big ol' van - it is being christened the "Short-Media Short-Bus Shuttle" for travel to and from the local Taco Bell ;)

Thank you for your reservation, m'lord. You'll be staying in room 2 (of 3). Mind the children running about your feet. Oh, and please excuse the cat - he does so love to sleep on people's faces.

Brian,

First of all, many and i mean MANY thanks for even considering to fix something like this. My Colorado Avalanche cap is off my head for a while for you (which is rare).

Second, $20 is peanuts compared to the time and quite possibly the amount of money you have to fork out.
I am trying like hell to down this trip buddy. My tickets was as of yesterday $700 but i dont care, I HAVE to do this.

Good man!

hahah marcus, you'd better leave that hat at home, you'll get killed for wearing that in Hockeytown.

I have a special trip planned for you, Mack, you'd better try to make it ;)

Just out of curiousity, if you could see a Wings game, would you rather see them play Boston, or Chicago? ;)

I'm interested, but not quite sure yet if I want to go.

I kind of gave up on the old Icrontic community when it split. It sounds like fun, but some more info (like what games, etc) would help.

EDIT: BTW, I live in Grand Rapids so the trip would be nothing. :D

There will be a thread going up within a few about what games are going to be running, and any suggestions from participants. Currently we are looking at UT (Of course), BF1942, Halo (Pc and Xbox, o my!!), HL2, C&C, Warcraft, JK, R63, etc etc.

We'll have to determine which ones we want as offical Tourneys (Prolly UT and HL2) and which ones are just for fun.

We should also figure out what games will be played at this little shindig. Looks like we got Operation Flashpoint, but what else?

I'm thinking UT/UT2K3 for some simple "kill anything that moves" FPS. How about Starcraft, or Warcraft 3 as a strat. game?

Keep in mind HL2 will be out by this point, and God knows I'd be rarin' to try it out for some unbeatable LAN action.

How many people have we confirmed that are coming? Also, we should get a list of games going. I’ll volunteer for that.

@Liquid: If you’re driving, stick it in the back seat. If your flying, take it on the plane.

If people are bringing their boxes from Europe, you should manage.

Templar
4 Oct 2003, 8:58pm
Bringing a tower onto a plane is an aweful big carry-on.

You could always pack it up and FedEx it to Prime's house or something a few days prior to your arrival (I'd be sure to clear this with prime first :D )

I'd go if I had money :\

Are you planning to have a server that can be accessed outside the network, or is it LAN servers only? :p

can a computer be safely transported on a plane? air fare I checked for me would be like $270 round trip, but that would be okay if I could bring my rig with me. I remember someone before saying they might be able to reserve me one of their monitors... ;) that would work out nicely

primesuspect
4 Oct 2003, 11:29pm
I have (count 'em) three monitors that I can let people use. Two 17" CRTs and a 15" cheapy LCD that probably sucks for gaming. Reserve 'em now! PM me for reservations.

mmonnin
4 Oct 2003, 11:37pm
I _should_ have a monitor. I think the one at home is kinda going out cause it shuts off once in awhile and you have to turn it back on. Not sure if it is reliable enough or not. I also have 2 15" monitors I could bring if someone is desparate.

hmm, should i bring my 22in monitor??

maybe i should just take my sister's 15in LCD instead.

Clutch
5 Oct 2003, 1:58am
As far as people who are coming, me and a friend are for sure coming. I would offer to bring up my other 17" monitor for anyone needing it, but it might would be a pain to carry it, since it is rather big and ol, because mustangs have very little back seats, but I could probably manage if I need to bring it.

Let me know.

Straight_Man
5 Oct 2003, 2:11am
Um, pack it in a big heavy PICNIC thermal cooler, duct tape shut, attach label saying themrally protected monitor enclosed-- they will XRAY it, but probably no damage that way if you also bag it and styrofoam peanut pack it or put cooler in box-- essentially, you need drop and some thermal and jostle protection, three boxes with taped shut heavy garbage bags, a metal trunk, or a cooler of 60 quarts size would probably protect biggest monitor you would want to CARRY for half a mile (US airports can be big(DTW, Detroit, is Real Big now), luggage carts are RENTALS in US usually). But a 2-3 CASE beer cooler would be enough if you peanut filled it, for a big 19" monitor and would have the nice benefit of not letting things have to be unthawed TOTALLY to work and protect them while being transparent to XRAYS. Mark it Electronic Components, FRAGILE, in 2 inch letters on banner paper WELL taped on, also. AND insure it.

John.

...because I don't know what will be going on with my life until close to the date. Additionally, a 14 hour drive (or 17-19 hours greyhound) is pretty wicked. Driving, it's an hour more than from Montgomery AL to Fairfax, VA...and that's a borderline 2 day trip for me :(

I still might come, but there's also the bit about driving on ice. Living in central Alabama, that's never been an issue for me except for once =/

Can a non-player come???

I have not played since we did the board and BB games in RO (Grey Owl, or whatever my little pewter statuette was called).... :)

I might DRIVE, if someone has GAS and Motel money and lives in Florida. The little Nissan can hold two people and two boxes. By then I MIGHT be a two-eyes and not a four eyes, thanks to double cataract surgery.

Yeah, I am good for a $20.00 but need to see how I can minimize trip costs. On short trips the little thing I drive gets 33 MPG. Highway, about 40 for longer jaunts. But January is COLD in MoTown, bring mukluks and a good parka Mackanz. Not QUITE as bad as Denver, but.... I might pack up my P4 Antec SX1040 box and see if Linux 9.2 can talk to the network box with a hard-coded link and dabble a bit if wanted, also (probably NOT, but might bring it for fun anyhow). If not, can load something else in the swap bay(like XP or 98 SE or BSD).

But I drink Gatorade, ICED black coffee and Mountain Dew, fair warning.

Or do we have an official LAN Digiphotographer yet???

Remember it's winter for us drivers and Michigan gets winters comparable to Southern Ontario. I'll take my time driving down there, as I'll be in 4' of blowing, drifting snow across the portion of Canada's busiest highway that is known as "Carnage Alley" for the sheer number of fatal accidents that occur (Highway 401 between London, Chatham & Windsor). :)

How strict are the cops in Michigan? Do they get cranky about speeding 5-30 MPH over the limit? I'm used to cruising @ 145 KMH in a 100 KMH zone (90 in a 60 zone for those Imperial folks). :)

IF you declare it on the way into US and have no illegal CDs, Canada\US border is pretty good. Tell them you are going to a friend's place for the weekend. Sometimes they want to see hardware receipts if you have them, usually not-- easier if you have proof of purchase in Canada just in case(for US side). You MIGHT get a customs receipt or end up with the computer customs tagged and you might end up showing what they give you to customs on the way back.

They should NOT open your computer, that would normally be illegal search, for BOTH sides of the border. Yuo CAN call Canadian customs (and local RCMP non-emergency number can tell who to talk with probably), they will tell you what you should need to do this, just tell them you plan to go to a friend's place or a computer mini-convention that trades computer knowledge for weekend to work on straightening out computer (gaming can get sweaty, that which gens sweat is WORK in physical sense) glitch because he is\they are helping for free. And all computers have glitches of one kind or another, right???

Whats the nearest airport to your facility? Can someone pick me up?

Should I come the 8th or ON the 9th?

Can I have some parts shipped directly to your office?

Would you have a case/PS you'd be willing to let me borrow for a few days?

Would I have any problems bringing my harddrive and my camcorder/tapes on an airplane? (keeping in mind harddrives and Digital8 tapes are magnetically sensitive, IE XRAY warning, right?)

Any other air travel tips with computer equipment would be helpful, I'm a newb, only been on an airplane once.

Um, shaken monitors tend to need reaiming sometimes afterward. So, we will foam pad such things or wrap them in a quilt each (3-4 layers of quilt all around or 1" thick foam all around or ditto of bubble wrap, HD mfrs used to UPS stuff, and about 2" all around was needed for older Hds that were less shock resistant than newer ones but about as likely to get damaged as monitors back then in late 80's) foam and then double garbage bag them and use packaging tape to seal well.

John.

Marc, please bring the monitor. One of us driving up might need it, so a spare on site is very good-- odds of one getting damaged slightly with 40 people bringing monitors is higher than just two driving up, but with 40 a spare to replace one in 40 if needed would be prudent and welcome-- BOTH.

Detroit City Airport is the very closest - it's about 2 miles away. Detroit Metro is about 20 miles away, but I'll be picking people up from there anyway, so either one doesn't matter. Yes, you will be picked up.

Should I come the 8th or ON the 9th?
Probably better to come on the 8th if you want to help set up or at least just be there for the very beginning. If you come on the 9th, who knows what time you'll be able to get started.

Can I have some parts shipped directly to your office?

Absolutely yes. No problem at all. The more we have set up before the thing starts, the better.

Would you have a case/PS you'd be willing to let me borrow for a few days? i don't think so. I only have one spare right now and I'm gonna put a computer into it for a spare for the lan. Some of our international friends are gonna be using the spares.

Would I have any problems bringing my harddrive and my camcorder/tapes on an airplane? (keeping in mind harddrives and Digital8 tapes are magnetically sensitive, IE XRAY warning, right?)

I would bring spare parts, but all I really have spare is a few crappy PSUs. I have a $hitty ATX case sitting around, but A: It's small, and B: It's a complete POS...

I guess someone could use it if they wanted, but they'd be better off mouning their mobo in a cardboard box...

TheSmJ had this to say

Actually I would recommend wood. It is much more sturdy and at least then you computer won't flop in half or catch on fire when the action heats up.

But i guess cardboard does have its advantages. I mean, then you could then fold your computer in half for the trip to save space.

Well, I guess its all up to actual user to weigh the pros and cons of wood or cardboard case to fit there personal needs.

If anyone decides to go the wood path for a case, let me know, I am experienced in this area and am willing to help anyone in need. :p

well, I'm gonna have to make my FINAL decision very soon or Prime is gonna kick me in the ass. If I book the flight soon, it's a nonstop roundtrip from Manchester to DTW Detroit for like $280, not too bad. I have a sweet Gigabyte KT300 mobo, a 30gb Western Digital HDD and a Radeon 9000 Pro 64mb I can ship to the offices then all I would need is a power supply and I can just order a cheap one and have it shipped there.

Is there anyone coming locally who has an extra monitor kicking around that they would let me borrow? I really dont feel like shipping a monitor to Detroit....would cost big bucks. This is really the only thing I need, right? Mobo, Video Card, Harddrive, P/S, Memory....trying to think of anything else.... well if anyone would be willing to let me use an extra monitor that would be too much of a hassle to bring along, I would be indebted to you forever...lemme know.
