My son is in the Army and shipped out to Germany 2 weeks ago. He was wanting to get a laptop so I gave him mine. I dug out my old KT7A, 1.2 tbird system and set it up in our bedroom where the laptop was. Well, the fan is extremely loud (don't remember which hs/f I put on it) so my wife said she couldn't sleep with the noise.
I just got back from Circuit City with my new Gateway MX6425 laptop. :D
AMD Turion 64 1.8ghz
15.4" WXGA
1gb ram
100gb hdd
DVD RW
blah, blah, blah
I've never owned a Gateway before. I hope it's as good as my old emachines laptop (2 years and no problems). Gateway bought emachines, so maybe I got the best of both. :)

I'm looking to get a laptop before I leave for college as a replacement for my desktop and was looking at some of the 64-bit ones, I'd be interested to see how it performs.
I just got my laptop Friday... omg this is great!
The best part is being able to play a game while taking a..... err using the "john" ;D

Nomad: I doubt I do enough on it to challenge it's abilities. Any particular tests/programs you want me to run?
//edit: I found a copy of pcmark2002 and ran it. I have no idea what the results say, but here they are.

I have to get a new laptop for college also....No idea what exactly i want other than a decent GPU. Probably like a 6800 mobile, and no less than a gig of ram.

thats why im glad i dont go to college until the fall of '07
cause i think a lot of things are going to happen between now and then. i cant wait. although, i think im going to get a dell, or maybe a sony vaio just because they are teh sexy. most likely a dell though. they seem really reliable
vaio's may be nice, but they are also much more expensive than dells, meaning you can get a dell thats faster than a vaio for cheaper.

I was more worried about generally stability, that's all.

i know that vaios are expensive but they are so shiny and sleek. I love them. as much as i prefer amd over intel, i think intel may have done something right with core duo except for that *little* usb bug.
Maybe amd will have a good dc 64 bit proc out by next year, although, amd seems to be more oriented torward desktop systems. I've only seen a few amd processors in production laptops. and im sure part of that has to do with the company's contract with intel.

Next to the Cult-of-Mac people, the Sony crowd is next in nuttiness. Mac users (painting with a broad brush here) will pay anything for a Mac. Sony enthusiasts will pay almost anything for a Sony.

I would get a vaio, theyre just really expensive. I think theyre the nicest looking laptops out there.

$2500 for a pentium m 753(1.2ghz), 60 gig hd, 1 gig ram, and an integreted graphics card. Come on, its such a ripoff. It may be a nice computer, but you could get the equivilant from another brand such as dell for like $1200.
I have nothing against sony so dont get me wrong. I like them, but not their prices.

Everyone at work uses laptops exclusively (Dell) as does my dad (Toshiba). Main problems seem to be the screens killing themselves and HDs dying but that seems to be after a year or more and you kinda need to beat em up and carry em around everywhere. I never used a lappy in college till the end (I was ME though) but the last year was nice having one around.
Also, as much as I hate extended warranties make sure you get one.

you have to look at the size of that thing, it's like 11 inches, dell doesn't have anything in that size.
I think dell has the 710m model which is a 12" and starts off at $900.
leishi, just wondering but is that guy on your sig from GTA III? I really like your sig, looks cool.

Why do people always get laptops for college? I've heard that people use them for taking notes during class but I've never seen ONE person doing this, and I've been going to school full time for what's going on 3 years now.
My note taking tool is a spiral bound notebook. It never crashes, is lighter than any laptop I've ever carried in my life, and (when coupled with a pencil) is so easy to use an untrained chimp could figure it out.
I realize many people can type far faster than they can write (such as myself) but I'd just end up using more time keeping the page formatted so the notes flow in such a way that they'd make sense hours after the lecture. It just overcomplicates what is already a simple task.
-And there are many people out there who know me that would say it means quite a bit coming from me.

Ive taken notes with my laptop and I have seen others do it as well. Sometimes I bring it to class just so I will stay awake.

I used to "take notes" on my laptop all the time during DBA class. And by "taking notes" I mean "playing GTA2".
I'm getting it so i can bring it back and forth from college to home. Im going to Ohio U which is about 2 1/2-3 hours away from my house, so if i come home say every now and then it'l just be easier than leaving a desktop there and worrying about it. Its also nice to have a laptop to just be able to use it around the house, trips ect....
just more convenient than a desktop

I don't feel like lugging an entire computer back and forth from college on break and the occasional weekend. It's more convinient and also serves a work purpose to a degree (Being able to show customers things actively). Also, I've been taking history notes for almost two years now by typing, and I do them so extensively I could never hand write them out every day.

yeh, im getting one, just for the mobility, that ill be able to bring it with me if i come home, not to mention im leaving this computer hear and im gonna have a college computer build off, so inabout a year and a half you can expect me to have a sw33t computer. hopefully am2 will have matured somewhat by then, since im still on S754 (i hate it) hopefully a jump from 754 to am2 will be a nice (huge) jump. although, my 2800 is quite bearable and does well on the games i play. I get 130 fps on tribes 2 and the likes, although i have a 6800GT oc'd to ultra im sure that helps.
