Is anyone else getting pissed off at the increasing amounts of people or companies that are using services like FilePlanet to host their downloads on? When I want to patch my game I don't want to go through 6 pages of adverts, being forced to sign up for god-knows-what and then getting the all familiar "Waiting Time: 37 minutes" because I'm not a "Premium Member".
This used to be a rare occurance limited to "Preview Videos" and Demos of new games, but not is seems to be increasingly more common in every field, even now down to drivers and game patches (Fileplanet or other services of the same type being the ONLY option to download the patch on the OFFICIAL SITE). I don't like it and I'm sure most other people don't appreciate being force-fed adverts, sign-ups and then being told you'll now have to wait 40 minutes OR MORE (I've seen in excess of 3 hours) before you can download the patch for your game (and then add the time of downloading it too if you're on a slow connection).
It's just not on.

I agree 100%.
I don't want to have to go to fileplanet for patches to games that are broken. Period.

I'm with you, Enverex, I'm sick and tired of all that FilePlanet rigamarole.
Fileshack baby, 500kb down for NON premium members, for premium? how fast is your connection?

8Mb, it's the hassle, signups and adverts that bother me.

I also use Gamershell - great speeds, one-click dowload, be done with it.

Same. I also yank stuff off some German sites too since the server loads are usually less and I can actually find stuff, but thats only when I'm desperate.

After lots of experience with gamershell, I always end up using the UK servers on the Zen pipe. They are always the fastest. The US servers are never as quick.

Armo hit it on the first try- Fileshack rocks. I have a crappy ISP, so netspeed isn't worth me talking about. I also have to say that Fileshack has beautifully simple web pages. Most download sites MUST have been designed by a class full of monkeys, because they are so cluttered I have to look all over for the link...Fileshack is easy to access and the wait time has never been more than 10 minutes.
If Fileshack doesn't have your file, I also suggest Filefront as a viable alternative. Same positives- quick menus, few banners, and no signups. 3DGAMERS can be OK sometimes, as well.

I can't say I've ever seen a patch or driver only available through FilePlanet or anything similar. A Google search always reveals plenty of other no-wait sources. I've been using GamersHell and Yahoo Games as of late.
SM having its own download service would be cool, but if you have to sign up for anything to use it, then how would it make it any better to use than FilePlanet?
And for the record I've never once been spammed by FP, before, during and after I was a paying member. They do have a newsletter, but it's very easy and clear-cut to opt-out or never receive it in the first place.

"...why why why"

I always use Gamershell or a torrent file if available.

this is one of the biggest reasons why i think steam is "okay"
cause when they have an update, it just downloads itself. no going trough websites and all that crap...
another company who does this is Blizzard, i am an avid Starcraft player and whenever there is an update, it just downloads and installs itself. no BS no nothing.

www.nzone.com nvidia usually has faster servers than FP or any other sites for most dowloads. they usually have all the demo's and patches.

oh and i forgot to mention.. whenever there is a game that i need to patch (wich is hardly ever cause i aint no super gamer) i use a site called megagames.com
sometimes they have the latest and greatest patches, sometimes they dont. But at least there is no BS
if you even think about megagames, either use FF or suffer the fate of the popups.
they have alot of NO CD cracks, cause im too lazy to find the CD
