No IP Address or Network Connections - XP

Where to begin?

I'm working on a compaq laptop running XP. I can't get to the internet at all. When I run ipconfig I have no IP address. And when I go under Network Connections, I have none.

I've checked the device manager and the network adapters are enabled.
I've tried to create a new network connections and I can get all the way through the wizzard, but then no connection is created.

I have two other computers running through the router that work fine, and can uplug the connection I'm trying to use for this laptop and plug it into another laptop and it works fine. So I'm sure it's not a problem with the ISP or the router.

I even took a CardBus PC Card and plugged into the machine. XP installed the drivers and it showed up in the device manager list, but I still could not get a connection.

I'm not even sure where to look any more. Suggestions?

What kind of connection is this? DSL... Cable? PPPoE... DHCP?

I'd say plug your computer into the Cable/DSL modem directly... if it works then.... you know it's the router. If not, then something else. I am pretty sure it may have something to do with the router as it should give some sort of IP.

Try unplugging the modem, router, and turn off the PC - mind you I say UNPLUG don't just switch them off, keep them turned on, but unplug the power). When that is all done, wait 5 minutes(just to be sure, and also be sure the Modem is unplugged from the cable/telephone connection). After 5 minutes, plug in the modem, wait for it to gain sync., wait 30 seconds and plug in the router, wait for it to get all up and running then boot up the PC.

If that don't work, try resetting everything, you may only need to reset your router. Make sure all connections and fully plugged in by unplugging and plugging them in.

If all that doesn't work, try giving your computer an IP address. Go into the Internet Protocol TCP/IP properties and be sure it is set to "obtain an ip address automatically", and also be sure "obtain a DNS server address automatically" as well. If it is set to that already, then try giving yourself an IP address like 192.168.1.47 or something, not 192.168.1.1 or any low numbers becuase the router will generally use a low number like that as it's own address.

Try those things. I don't know your connection type or even what router you have, but if you read into the info I typed it should help you resolve the issue.

Thanks for the suggestions. It was not my modem or my router. I'm on a cable modem with a dlink router.

Somewhat by accident I fixed it by replacing the following files with copies from a previous restore:
C:\windows\system32\config\system
C:\windows\system32\config\software
C:\windows\system32\config\sam
C:\windows\system32\config\security
C:\windows\system32\config\default

Now, I have a new problem related to the HPWirelessMgr, but I'll work on that then post a new thread if I can't figure it out.
