Just a thought. This may not be in keeping with the idea of a LAN but, How about a passworded server running as a 'side event'? Then those of us that can't make it could at least join in to some extent. A little non attendees UT, or whatever, would be nice.

Wow, we're officially at 30 confirmed attendees (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43870)!

Signup will be open for another month, so there's plenty of time to get in on some of the amazing prizes, exceptional camaraderie, and terrible fun of the Short-Media LAN party.

Ten more spots are left! I have word that a certain thrax lite may be confirming soon, so I'm thinking that leaves 9 spots left..... Get in while the getting is good! :)

Is the event tent going to be larger and/or will there be more tables? We barely had enough space last year on the tables with the 25 or so attendees that we had.

That was related to some of the tables being underpopulated. There should be much more space if everyone puts their tower on the ground.

Crazy Joe
16 May 2006, 5:20am
The reason people didn't want to put their towers on the ground was because of the ants...

shwaip
16 May 2006, 5:28am
Mine was on the ground, with the side open. And a non-filtered fan intake on the bottom front. No ants inside. At least none that caused any problems :p

I was more talking about the table with Keebs + Prime's kids. There were 4 or 5 people in a lot more space than they needed. Not that it really matters anymore.

GHoosdum
16 May 2006, 1:52pm
None of the tables were underpopulated. No one should have to put their tower on the ground. The normal spacing at a LAN event is 2 people per 6-foot table, side-by-side, or 3 people per 8-foot table, at an absolute stretch (this orientation limits mousing ability). Last year, those of us who were cramped had 3 people per 6-foot table, with two people on one side and the other in the middle on the other side. That's no where near enough space.

So, for an event of 40 people, we would need 20 6-foot tables for just the participants, plus any tables for server, etc. I think we need assigned seating as well.

Here (http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2005/04/20/lan_party_how_to_/) is a rough guide on planning a LAN party, written by an individual who is essentially in the business of planning successful LAN parties.

Here's his quote on tables:
Tables are usually arranged in rows of pairs of tables set back-to-back lengthwise, with usually twelve tables per double row. I personally prefer 6 foot tables with two people per table. I've been to parties where the organizers tried to optimize space by using 8 foot tables with three people per table. And while this is possible, it's nowhere near as comfortable. Two people per 6 foot table gives each person about 3 feet, while with three people at an 8 foot table, you're only getting about 2.5 feet of elbow room.

As you can see, he doesn't even think 3 people per 8-foot table give enough room, and we had 3 people on a six-foot table last year. I barely had any place to put my mousepad.

If I ended up in the pond, it would become personal. I was able to be a good sport about the noogies I got last year, but my sense of humor has limits, and 'tossed in the pond' is way beyond those limits. I would take it as a personal physical attack, and would treat it accordingly.

That's why you're a candidate.

The common vein I see between the three candidates on the list for the pond is a certain air of party-pooperishness that comes out more often than any of the other LAN attendees. I have a feeling it is personal. ;)

Unfortunately, it's that same party-pooperishness that leads me to believe that the pond victim might just sulk off and call the cops, while the rest of us have a great chuckle and call the waaambulance. :tongue2:

I believe strongly in the golden rule.

I would never, ever throw someone in a pond thinking that it was funny or friendly. I never play practical jokes on people, and I don't pick on people for their disabilities.

I expect reciprical treatment. If you want to play a joke on someone, play it on the type of person who also plays jokes on people.

It's not like I'm the type of person who 'dishes it out, but can't take it'. I never 'dish it out', and I ask respectfully, that no 'dishing out' be directed toward myself, either.

Just leave me out of the whole dishing process. :)

This discussion makes me less likely to enjoy this event. I thought the idea was to bring everyone together, not isolate people as "party-poopers" and threaten them if they come. How is that being a friend? Sounds like a bully to me.

What's wrong with you guys? This is a joke. Nobody is going in the pond, you guys need to lighten up :shakehead

22 May 2006, 4:32pm
Jeez, guys. Lighten up is right. You're starting to sound like my dad at a particularly argumentative family function: "Now look what you've done. You've ruined Thanksgiving for me!"

And really, in general people isolate themselves as party poopers, nobody else needs to do it for them.

50% of what happens around this place needs to be viewed with a sense of humor in order to be interpreted correctly, and the other half is SVT threads.

I figured that it was a joke, but people have done more inapropriate things before in the name of fun, and I just wanted to make it clear that I am not to be the target of these things. I thought that you were joking about the noogies last year, and I ended up sadly mistaken.

I don't really care if that labels me as a party-pooper. Personally, I feel it's a respect issue, not a sportsmanship issue, but I'm used to being misunderstood by now, and labels stopped bothering me in gradeschool.

While my particular sense of humor might think that throwing someone in the pond was rather funny (and of course the amount of alcohol I've had would increase the hilarity) I would only find it funny if the person that was the target thought it was funny as well... I realize that not everyone has the same sense of humor as me, and since CB is my friend I know his views on such things and would never throw him in a pond... That GHoosdum guy on the other hand, he's pretty skinny so I think I could pretty easily make him go in the drink...

Actually I don't eat all that many veggies. I'd float because of the "crap rises to the top" principle.

Next year we should regester with LANParty.com if we want a party of a couple hundred. :P

25 May 2006, 8:55pm
hmmm.. duno, I'm probably comming next year, so we should keep it small so that I have a better chance of winning something cool, although, If we had that many people, then there would be mucho money to buy prizes with, but we woul d have to secure a place to hold all of the people, which would cost money.

We could just have a "lan party" at a certain location for like a day or afternoon as a competition in a conference hall or something, and then have an sm members party with the normal 40 or so people, that way, at the party, we could hand out sm propaganda, and then still have "bonding" time with each other.

Well I'm currently in Dallas hoping for seating on AA 514 which arrives in Detroit around 9:30 PM. If I'm lucky that'll be when I get there, if not there's another flight that hopefully won't be as full arriving at 12:30 AM.

Lunch was good, by the way. Thanks for taking me redchief.
