Hi everyone, I need some help please. Tonight my daughter was browsing e-bay and had aol im logged on, when suddenly she get's all these im's from the people on her list being sent back to her with a link on it. She started adaware or spybot immediately and deleted some things it found and then called me. So, I'm not sure what she got, but she said she was hijacked by a trojan downloader. Now when I run Spybot, I get this:
Windows Security Center.AntivirusDisabiltyNotify
Windows Security Center.AntivirusOveride
Windows Secutiry Center.FirewallDisbleNotify
Windows Security Center.Firewall Overide
Windows Security Center.SP2Update
Windows Security Center.UpdateDisableNotify
These are marked in red. After you check them it says the problem is fixed, however when you restart the computer, it all comes back.
When I go to the Windows Security Center, I can not turn on the firewall and when I turn on the updates, it just turns back off again when I open it back up. At the top of the firewall page, it says "For your security some settings are controlled by Group Policy." I am not on a network. I have a home compuer with Windows XP Home.
I have followed all of your suggestions before posting except for installing a firewall.

Here is my Hijack this log:

By the way, I have Microsoft Defender and it hasn't had any response to this situation. That is frusterating.

While typing this I ran Panda Software Scan. It did show W32/Oscarbot.GL.Worm. I find this curious since I use NAV and scan weekly along with scanning tonight and it was not discovered. I can't post the scan because it makes the post too long.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Download Dr. Web to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file. It will then suggest to run an expressscan -- this you should allow.
After this (Dr.Web writes "Done" at the Bottom-left), you click Options->Change settings.
Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
Choose the "Actions"-tab, and choose "Rename" under all the Malware-issues.
Back at the main window, you should now mark the drives that you want to scan (a red dot shows which drives have been chosen).

Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start. The first time Dr.Web finds something, you click "Yes to All", and it will after this automatically fix what is found.
After the scan: Close Dr.Web and restart the computer.

Rescan with Panda ActiveScan and post the new log in your next reply. We will settle the remaining infections by HijackThis a while later.

I did as you suggested. Here is the Panda Active Scan. Sorry I don't know how to save and post it so it is more readable.
Thanks again for your help.

Now restart the computer. Once the computer boots up, start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Allow Windows to Show hidden and System Files (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html).

Then navigate to and delete the following files if present:
C:\Downloads\1nuttySanta.exe
C:\Program Files\kazaa\bdcore.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cd_clint.dll

You can choose to rehide the hidden and system files now.

Then close all windows and restart the computer again. You should get back to normal mode.

Rescan with Panda ActiveScan and HijackThis and post the two fresh logs here. Hopefully you should be cleaned up by now.

Here is my Panda Active Scan and HiJackThis results. Of course I'm still unable to start my Windows Security Center service. I would imagine I need to do things in the registry, but I have no idea what. I did find some info from google that I at least was able to get the firewall running again. At least I think it is. I hope you will continue to help me clean-up the Hijack This log.
Thanks again.

Please empty your Recycle Bin, then delete the following files if present:
C:\Documents and Settings\Becca\Local Settings\Temp\res38.#mp
C:\Downloads\LeakTest.exe (If you don't need it anymore)

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please download HijackThis version 1.99.1 from here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip
and make sure to unzip it to a permanent folder. Then please run HijackThis, click Scan and Save log, and post the new log here. I would be happy to take a look at it.

I did as you suggested. Here is the new log.

Also, I think I solved the problem with the windows security center. I went to services and this service had been turned off. I was able to restart it and it is now on. I restarted the computer and it remains on.

From my HijackThis log, I would think I need to fix the last item. What do you think?
This is so mind boggling for me. You are a great help.

I do have another question. I downloaded and installed Spyware Blaster like it was suggested in the forums. It says it working, but I don't detect any new services in the Task Manager, so is it really working?

Thanks again.
Scarlet

Please start HijackThis and place a checkmark by the following entries:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} - http://arcade.icq.com/carlo/zuma/popcaploader_v5.cab

Close all other windows except HijackThis and press "Fix Checked". Now restart the computer.

Congratulations! Your computer appears clean.

Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click System Restore. Click to add a check mark beside Turn off System Restore on all Drives, and click Apply. When you are warned that all existing Restore Points will be deleted, click Yes to continue. All system restore points are deleted. Now you should manually create a restore point. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click System Restore.
Click Create a Restore Point, and then click Next. Name your restore point. (I use the date as well as a descriptive term such as "Clean system.")

Here are a number of recommendations for additional protection to help prevent any malware infections in the future. These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Watch what you download!
Do not download just anything you see on the web. Some may have spyware bundled into them.

2. Try not to use peer-to-peer programs.
P2P programs like Grokster, Imesh, Kazaa and others are amongst the most notorious, come with an enormous amount of bundled spyware that will eat system resources, slow down your system, clash with other installed software, or just plain crash your browser or even Windows itself. If you insist on using a P2P program, please read this article (http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/) written by Mike Healan of Spywareinfo.com fame. It is an updated and comprehensive article that gives in-depth detail about which P2P programs are "safe" to use.

3. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
We recommend checking for Windows updates monthly.

4. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

So why is ActiveX so dangerous that you have to increase the security for it?
When your browser runs an activex control, it is running an executable program. It's no different from doubleclicking an exe file on your hard drive.
Would you run just any random file downloaded off a web site without knowing what it is and what it does?

5. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Periodically check for updates.

6. Keep your antivirus software up to date. If you don't have one, I recommend the free AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_371a669.exe).

7. Use a firewall. If you don't have a firewall, I recommend the free version of ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp)
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html)

8. IE-SPYAD (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm) puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. Another good hosts program is mvpshosts (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip). This little program packs a powerful punch as it block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm).

9. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox, which is much safer than Internet Explorer.
http://www.mozilla.org/

10. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
Ad-aware: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/adaware.html
Spybot S&D:
http://www.safer-networking.org
Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

11. Microsoft now offers their own anti-spyware product. Windows® Defender (Beta 2) (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en) improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over fifty (50) ways spyware can enter your PC. This is a BETA for XP/2000 only.

12. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

Let us know if we have not resolved your problem. Otherwise, you are good to go.
Happy and Safe Surfing! :D
