View Full Version : SM-LAN Event: Duct-Tape Engineering Challenge

GHoosdum
16 May 2006, 08:07 PM
What: A contest of skills... duct-taping skills! Teams of three (3) will face-off against each other to engineer the best duct-tape something at the LAN!
Where: The exact contest location will be determined by the nature of the challenge.
When: During the SM-LAN, of course! Saturday the 24th at 2:00 PM EST

The Details: The contest is simple - which team can build the best something out of duct tape? The contest is also very complex - the something must be constructed entirely from duct tape. Each team will be provided with one (1) roll of duct tape at the beginning of the challenge. The teams will then be given between 1 and 2 hours to build something out of the duct tape. When the time expires, the duct tape projects will be judged against each other by how well they meet the challenge, engineering prowess, and innovation & ingenuity. What the teams will be required to build will not be revealed before the beginning of the challenge

The Judges:
Rob "GHoosdum" Updegrove, Coordinator & Challenge Judge
Qualification: Brian said he is allowed to run this contest at the LAN, yo.
CB "CBDroege" Droege, Innovation & Ingenuity Judge
Qualification: His Creativity is rivaled only by his appetite for Arby's Roast Beef.
Joe "CrazyJoe0813" Lloyd, Engineering Prowess Judge
Qualification: He successfully flunked out of UC's Enginneering college and was banned from ever returning.

Entry Fee: There is a $4.00 USD entry fee per person into the contest. Duct tape isn't cheap, and this contest will be self-funding.

The Prize: The Prize is a Team 93 "Join Folding" T-shirt for each member of the winning team!

Please PM me to confirm your entry. Teams can be randomly assigned, or self-selecting. Post any questions or comments in this thread.

On a side-note, "Team Nexlia" is the undisputed champion of a similar event that is held at LANWAR. In fact, last year, Team Nexlia built a working soap-box derby car completely out of duct tape, and we beat the second place team by at least 3x the distance.

Therefore, any "Team Nexlia-durrrrrr" members are banned from entering the Duct-Tape Engineering Challenge at Short-Media LAN.

I'm up for it!!!! Oh and I think Team Nexdrrrrrr can participate but not collectively!!! Break them up and make them work to be champions again!!!

The problem is this: Team Nexlia has a set of construction techniques that we've been refining for years, and everyone knows them. If a member of team Nexlia went to another team, I'd know that those construction techniques were going there, and when they showed up, that team would rate pretty low for innovation & ingenuity in my book - if anything, having a Nexlian on the team might be a hindrance to overall project score. (The contest we participate in at LANWAR only counts project performance for the win, not innovation, otherwise we probably wouldn't do as well, copying ourselves every time!)

What's the prize?

The prize is yet to be determined. Basically, I plan on taking all the money that is left after buying the duct tape, and using it to get the prize.

[V][AGIC']random teams or are we gunna get some time to plan this out?

You can form a team of 3 in advance. Anyone who is not already in a team will be assigned to random teams. I don't know how much advance planning you can really do, though, because I'm not going to announce what you'll be building until the event begins.

You're bringing in a ringer as the third member of your team - one of your kids!

Everyone knows that kids are more creative and innovative than old folks (like me). This whole business is rigged - rigged, I tell you!

I'd call your ideas more structurally sound but more engineering intensive, so we usually run out of time before implementation. I'd actually love to see sharkydart's duct-taping prowess get a chance to shine. OK, you're in. ;)

Duck tape is like the force, It has a dark side and it has a light side and for the most part it holds the universe together.

Thank you Team Nexlia.

This was the only event, other than the F@H Walk, that took place. You single-handly made it happen. I applaud you for taking charge and grabbing people into this. While the "Dirty Bastards" did not provide a quality product, I think we still won because we worked together and participated in a great event.

Thank you everyone that participated!!!
