We have just added one new event to the SM LAN 2006. Short-Media is going to have its first ever Walk to promote Folding@Home, the "Short-Media Walk for a cure". More on Folding@Home can be found here (http://folding.stanford.edu/) as well as right here. (http://www.short-media.com/folding.php?v=teaminfo) This will be just like the marathons that are run for different causes but it will just be a simple three mile walk as we want it to be open to all of the SM LAN attendees. The people who are not walking or not attending the LAN can do their part by "Sponsoring" a walker. Walkers can have as many people sponsor them as they wish. The minimum sponsor "pledge" we are asking for is $1.00 per mile and up to as much as you wish. Since it is only 3 miles long the minimum would only be $3.00 per sponsor. But please do't let this stop anyone from pledging at higher levels. the proceeds from this event will go solely to help with costs of providing the SMX rigs we often find hosts from the team 93 membership. To make things more interesting we will be offering a free Join Folding Team 93 T-shirt (http://short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46249) to the top contributor (the top single sponsor) and another to be offered in a drawing where all who donate will be entered.

For now we will let the SM LAN attedees who will walk post their names here and let those who wish to sponsor them post so in here. We will keep all the names and pledges updated in this first post of the thread. Good luck to all and please remeber that this is for your team, Team 93!

Walkers will get their shirts at the LAN for a discount so we can look good. We are also trying to get some kind of media coverage on this. So make your team proud!

We only have 28 dys left as of today to get this going!!!

There are many LAN goers who are not on the walking roster and we need to see you now. I will be bringing lots of slimy surprises for those who try to skate out of this. ;) We also need more sponsors. There are several walkers who still need sponsors. When it comes time for new rigs to roll out for the SMX project and all you see for offering are lame old hunks remember why! This is YOUR TEAM so take PRIDE IN IT and PARTICIPATE! Just think, if tere is a big enough turnout of this and the T-shirts there is the real possibility of turning out some really supper machines from up to date parts. :D The walk is only about an hour, most spend more time walking through the grocery store than that. The minimum sponsor amount is $1.00 per mile or $3.00. This is an incredibly cheap way to help your team NOW!!!

We need your support!

We need more walkers from the LAN attendees!

We need more sponsors!

Also, don't forget to order your folding T-shirts!

General Keebler and CB Droege still need individual sponsors.

I would also like to mention that only 20% of LAN attendees are walking so far! This is freaking pathetic! The rest of you should be ashamed of yourselves for simply mot wanting to walk off your Sunday breakfast!!! Where are all the people who are wishing to one day host an SMX rig? You need to be sponsors to help insure we have enough rigs in the future to go around! I have bad knees and am broke but I'm walking and sponsoring. What's your (to those who haven't done anything yet) excuse???

THIS IS FOR YOUR TEAM!!!

Come on folks and show some team spirit
I know you're folding and that's a big help Thank-You
But this is for fun you read this thread and see the fun that's getting started
But if there's not enough sponsors we may not enjoy this again.
It's only a buck a mile and the pics of this should be worth that, So don't let this be the first and last.
Oh profdlp I'll sponsor your two dogs too at a buck a mile if they go with you.

I'm going to see if any of my students or co-workers would like to sponsor me. Perhaps other's could try and do the same...

It would help if I had an official blurb about where the money is going, so that people know that it's a good cause, and that the fund is getting 100% of it...

Try this (ripped from the SMx page on Short-Media home)

The SMx Project is an effort by Team Short-Media to pool spare parts and money to create full-time folding computers. Donations are made to the team, which are then used to contruct the computers (often referred to as 'rigs'). A member of the team is then selected to host the rig at their home for as long as they are able.

Volunteer team members donate their time and effort to make this project work; there are no overhead costs. 100% of your contribution will go towards creating new SMx rigs to fold full-time for Team 93

Okay, I'll add in some stuff about what 'folding' is (Only the students who've taken my classes proly know about it, yet) and use that. I guess I could have looked on that page myself :/

If people write a check after the event is over, who should the check be made out to? SMx Fund?

GHoosdum
12 Jun 2006, 03:57pm
The SMx project doesn't have its own bank account, so the SMx funds are recordkept seperately but under the auspices of Short-Media.

I will sponsor prof at $5/mile, BUT, I want to make this interesting. I want to see if the (next to) oldest goat can keep up, so, prof, if you win, then I will do $10/mile. and by win, I mean that you have to be the first to come across the finish line.:D

Edit: After seeing that some walkers needed sponsored, my money goes to who ever needs the sponsors, but its all going to the same place, the winning the race proposition still stands. In the even no one needs the sponsorship, it is to go the the most out of shape walker in sight:vimp:

I want vidoes of this!!, shoot, at that price, I could buy a GGW video, but I thikn I might get more satisfaction out of an old guy trying to win a walk.(hopefully someone will turn it into a race:bigggrin:)

I am ahead of QCH in the race. (Which I will be, I assure you.)
QCH sees that my lead is increasing. (I am "pulling away in the distance".)
QCH cannot bear to watch the humiliating sight of a 47yo guy outdoing him. (He's crying like a baby by this point.)

Now I feel sorry for poor Larry - he's taken it upon himself to recordkeep all of this!
Who's on first, what's on second and I don't know is on third.

I just got back from driving from Jacksonville, Fl to Austin, Tx (1148 mi) in just over a day. I drove 2 hrs last night after arriving at the airport then started at 6 AM and got back here at 9 PM today. So needless to say, I'm beat and will sort it tomorrow.

Muchos Gracias young man.. very kind :D

I could never be humiliated by you... I would be celebrating that people your age can actually still walk. ;D

I now have everything sorted and it is starting to look like we have something going now. We are now up to 15 walkers or 37% of LAN attendees. There are also 15 sponsors with a total potential of $390.00 in sponsorships. I would really like to see all LAN attendees walk to show their support for this event. :)

I already said that I would sponsor any one who sponsors me. That means another $1/mile for Zanthian.

Also, I took a look at the 'sign up to sponsor me' sheet that I left out in the office. I'll leave it out until the last minute tomorrow, but I noticed that there are at least $50 in promised sponsorship dollars so far...:wow2:

Well.... The walk was VERY late due to missing people but we did do the walk.

mtgoat, QCH2002, GHoosdum, Cyclonite, profdlp, General Keebler, CB Droege, sharkydart, CrazyJoe0813, Kyle, Perry, and Zanthian all walked... Prime walked most of the course....

We started shortly after 12:30 PM. Sadly, QCH sprained his ankle within the first 1/10 of a mile and Profdlp started his steady 3.5 MPH. Prof, GHoosdum, sharkydart, and Zanthian quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack. Kyle and Perry did a great job keeping up with the first group. Keebs started late but ran past everyone to catch the first group. He even carried one of the kids for a while. Prime appeared about a mile into the walk, right behind the first group. CB Droege, and CrazyJoe0813 were keeping a nice steady pace also... QCH, mtgoat, and Cyclonite brought up the rear.

When the first group rounded the last 1/2 mile, Zanthian had to stop........ for a Coke Slushy but it didn't seem to effect his overall time. :D

As for the finish... I believe Zanthian, sharkydart, and GHoosdum all finished within seconds of each other after a mad dash for the finish line. QCH2002 and Profdlp, very close behind, both attempted to run the last 100 yards to find out who would be coughing up the $10. Sadly, this reporter was too pooped after running the last bit to see what happened to Brian, Keebs, Kyle, Perry, CB Droege, and CrazyJoe0813. I know that mtgoat, and Cyclonite arrived shortly after and seemed like best friends... they even stopped and bought some water!!!

All in all... a very good event. I'll leave the donation details to mtgoat but I know that this raised a ton of cash. Thank you everyone of the walkers and to every donator. Thank you mtgoat for the great idea!!!

I agree - this event was great fun for me, and a great bonus for the team. I loved walking around sporting my great "JoinFolding" shirt (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46249) and shouting at people to join folding.

And don't forget that our powerful friend citrixmeta single-handedly raised $42 for the team with his pushups!

Shorty, Sledgehammer, and Thrax did not walk... So I guess you own nothing. UNLESS.... you decide to still want to just donate $15? Brian's kids walked and did a great job!!!

Keebler
26 Jun 2006, 06:11pm
I was playing kid-roundup through the walk. We couldn't find Perry, then realized he'd dashed off to the front when we weren't looking. Brian decided to drive to the front to catch up with the kids. I found Kyle half way up the pack and ran with him on my back to get up to Perry. Kyle walked with Brian, and Perry took off at warp again. I caught up with Perry, who then got quite tired and hot 2.5 miles in, so we stopped at a BK for some cherry slushies which I must say made us both feel better :D We finished just ahead of CB and CJ I think. mtgoat and Cyclonite rolled in not long after.

26 Jun 2006, 06:14pm
Keebs is an absolute CHAMP for completing the 3-mile trek with a child on his back for most of the way. He has more than earned the funds that he raised for the team in this event.

And Larry... this was such a great idea. Thank you for organizing this thing and getting us to do something to counter all the calories of wonderful food that we ate this weekend.

Well... the walk was good for the Team and not bad for the body too!!! Of couse, after all the good food consumed during the 4 days... I need to walk, like, 500 miles to work off the food. :D

{EDIT} See... I wasn't the only one that thought about food and walking!!!

It was a fun three-mile walk. Right about mile five I was feeling a little tired, but I made it through to the seven-mile halfway point. Long about mile twenty I caught my second wind and managed to finish the entire marathon. Turning around and repeating the entire process while walking backwards with a piano on my back and an anvil tied to each leg got to me, though.

It was really cool when the Chairman of the Olympic Committee hung that gold medal around my neck. :woowoo:

(I'm getting a head start on the storytelling exaggeration process.)

Hey Guys, Try some Aloe gel on those sunburns....
It really does relieve the pain and will stop most of the pealing if you use aloe and moisturizer. Of course apply carefully so as not to irritate the sore areas.
I have large aloe plants growing around my front porch and in containers, so I just cut a fresh limb that's full of juice. Split it down the middle and scrape out the jelly fron inside. Apply that generously to the sunburn. It's great for regular burns too. Helps stop scaring if you have bad burns or scrapes too.
