I'm trying to start teaching myself some programming. It will be about a year before I can start taking classes to learn. Can anybody reccomend some good websites, programs, or other references for a beginner who doesn't really know much at all?
What languages are you wanting to learn? What kind of applications?

Programming for what? Web page creation?
BTW, I've been to your town, Beaufort many, many times. That's a lovely area. Do you live in the old town, by chance? It has the charm and relaxed feel that Hilton Head used to have. Do you ever go to Hunting Island. That's a great beach, without crowds, noise, and heavy traffic.

I was thinking more about C++, maybe some Java, too. Not sure what kinds of applications I'm interested in writing. I'm not very familiar with either code at all right now, so I don't know what can really be done with them. Any suggestions? Should I be looking at a different code?
By the way, sorry it's taken me a few days to reply; I'm in Iraq at the moment and our Internet connection here is pretty flaky at best.
