I have a retail version of hl2. I had it installed on my computer and had the data backed up on my secondary drive. I then wiped the drive. I have my install cds but do not have the cd key. Is it possible to install with just the steam acct (i remember the username and password) or can i find the cdkey hidden in the backed up game files somewhere. I have been looking in the files but have no luck yet.

would call valve and tell em about whats upi mean if the acct is like cdkey specific..there should be no problem with them looking into back up files or something to figure it out..just a thought though..and its worth a shot
also..its probably somewhere in the registry..type in regedit and look around for a hl2 folder...i dunno the registry enough to say for sure htough

You should be ok as long as you have registered the account on Steam.

Yeah. Download and install the latest version of Steam. Login to your account, and everything should be there ready to download.

As said above. Once you add a retail game to steam its there for good. You don't need the CD key or install media any more.

onnce you setup your steam account you are gold.
you can simply download HL2 on your computer (or any other one for that matter) and when it is finished just plug in your steam account username/pass and you are ready to roll!
I'm not a big fan of steam by any means, but being able to just download the game onto any computer and unlock it by simply entering my account info is pretty nice :)
cheers!
It's a first though. It makes pirating valve games almost impossible, exspecially if you want to play online.
