View Full Version : Who wants SM20?

14 Oct 2003, 5:06am
Sorry for the delay. Been busy and got off track.

As always here are the rules for hosting a SMx rig.

1) Team member must be in good standing and have shown dedication to Team Short-Media, former Team Icrontic, and the Folding@Home project for the long haul. Past participation and contributions are taken into account. Please remember this now also includes keeping at least one machine other than the SMx rig folding for Team 93. You must be an active member to participate and continue participating.

2) The member must be able to provide SM20 with a safe and secure environment for an extended period of time - this means an indeterminate period.

3) You must be knowledgeable in building computers and loading operating systems, and all that is entailed. You are at Short-Media.com, there is a wealth of knowledge, use it. In the event the rig should fail, the host is expected to make a good effort in trying to repair the rig and report to the team what is going on.

4) Dedicated, "always-on" Internet connection 24/7, 56K and up, and a free port on an existing network (we don't normally supply routers/hubs/switches with the SMx rig). If the internet connection should fail, the host is expected to make good faith efforts to get back online as soon as is possible.

5) The computer must run and as a result, "Fold" 24/7. (Yes, the Team is generous enough to allow you to go on vacation and turn it off.) Keep in mind that 24-hour operating will increase your electricity bill by up to a few dollars per month. The Team expects the host to make good faith efforts to keep the rig running as much as is possible.

6) The computer shall fold for Team #93, under the user name of "SMx" exclusively unless it has been voted on to make it differently. The team can/will monitor the rigs output by way of statistics provided by Stanford, Statsman and the like.

7) In the event the host can no longer host the SMx rig or he/she is not able to run the rig for an extended period of time due to things like being called to duty in the armed forces for example, it is to be found a new host by normal host selection process.

8) What does the host get out of this? The pride of being able to host a SMx Folding rig, one of very few to earn this privilege. To be able to help Team Short-Media be the best team and the F@H project find cures.

Disclaimer;
- All Team-donated parts that go into a SMx donated Folding@Home computer are property of the Short-Media.com Folding@Home Team.
- Short-Media.com, and/or its owner(s), and/or administrator(s), and/or moderator(s), and/or member(s), shall not be held responsible or liable for any losses incurred either directly, or indirectly as a result of hosting any SMx rig. The host selected shall bear full responsibility for said rig. By applying to be selected as a host, you acknowledge you understand, agree with, and will abide by these rules as set forth here and as may be amended in the future as required.
-Hosts must provide contact information such as phone number and address in case an emergency contact needs to be made.

NOTE; This entire project and the rules set forth above is/are based on TRUST. We, the team, trust that you, the host, will do all you can to keep the rig folding as much as is possible, in its name, for the Short-Media.com Folding Team. You, the host, trust, that we, Team Short-Media, support you in every way we can.

So anyone that can meet the requirements posted above and would like to host such a machine, please enter your name in the 'hat' and a host will be picked in a week depending on the number of entries.

Any other useful info like internet connection, hosting facilities, and experience would help the committee greatly in choosing a host for SM20.

The time has some to add your name in the hat.:)

Username has to be unique so we can keep track of it.

muddocktor
14 Oct 2003, 1:43pm
I see no problems with naming it "SM20_angel_heather", just like we named SM13 as IC13_Bart_Williams for good old Bart. As a matter of fact, I think that this would be a great idea, to name this rig in memory of Mtgoat's daughter.

Lincoln
14 Oct 2003, 2:01pm
Agreed

QCH
14 Oct 2003, 2:12pm
SM19 thinks that it would be a good idea to honor the passing of Mtgoat's Daughter. Shall we set up a poll to allow the SM members an opportunity to support this honorable endeavor? I think it would pass with resounding success.

Kwitko
14 Oct 2003, 2:22pm
No need to vote. SM20_Angel_Heather is perfect!

QCH
14 Oct 2003, 2:27pm
The SMx Committee has full rights to naming the rigs but... I thought that a show of support from the masses would also give an extra boost to the members. Give the sense that we, the members, want to honor Heather. The staff suggests it and the members support and encourage it.

Leonardo

As always, I've got case fans of all sizes if needed for SM-20. Have an old CD-ROM and FDD too.

keto
14 Oct 2003, 3:21pm
I really don't think any extra work is required, such as setting up a poll. Can you imagine the feedback (F L A M I N G) to anyone who objected to that naming? It still uniquely identifies SM20 and at the same time honours the passing of a loved one of a valued contributing member. And, as noted, there is a precedent.

If it ends up that The folks decide that I would be a good host I will be upgrading my 2500+ barton to a 3200+ in the not to far future so the box will be upgraded as I upgrade mine Oh and the sm-20 box is the one that should be named after Heather not 19 since 19 is in production already and I have enuf fans and cpu coolers to make my own wind tunnel! /me ponders the thought of His own wind tunnel!!!

Leo, SM-20 will need 2x 80mm fans. Unfortunately, I only had 1 blowhole in the case and never got around to installing front intake & rear exhaust fans.

I'll bid for this one, seeing that forum staff members can finally get in on the SM action. I've got lots of plugs in the wall, a 24/7 cable internet connection and plenty of network connections left on my switch. I've been folding for a little over a year, with a 4 month hiatus during the summer. It would be an honor to host an SMx machine :)

Again, I've not yet contributed parts to the cause, but I've got a wonderfully free college dorm room that'd love to host it.

Rochester has cold winters, I don't pay utilities, and how's 5mbps down & 528kbps upstream to the far coast sound for a 'net connection? :D

So, I'm in, if you'll let me be : )

BJ: (yes, that's an evil way to cover his name)

I can cover the connection at home (both cable & DSL, don't ask :p), though I could leave it in a friends on-campus appartment year round too : p

I'd rather take it home though, I'd worry about leaving it out of physical reach.

muddocktor
18 Oct 2003, 12:03am
Gnomewizardd, if you would be chosen, it would be cheaper to just buy a 2 port kvm switch to monitor it. Newegg sells a Linkskey(I think) 2 port switch with cables for around $50. If you really want to go cheap, then go headless and monitor the machine with VNC, which is free.;)

mmonnin
18 Oct 2003, 12:11am
I use VNC. www.realvnc.com is a pretty good one.

Then you can monitor it with EM3 to make sure its running.

GnomeWizardd
18 Oct 2003, 2:13am
I can get 17 in monitors at the flea market that are guaranteed to work for 2 days for 20 bux But i am thinking Flat panel to replace my crt. Not as efficiant for gaming but alot easier to pack for the lan!

Buddy J
18 Oct 2003, 5:56am
Garg and I networked our appartment and we check IC11 by sharing it's folding folder on the network. All we do is check the timestamp on the last completed frame. It's easy and free (after the cost of all the hubs, Cat5 and my Linksys router)

BTW, I'm glad to hear that you already had that covered Jonsey. Kudos for thinking ahead.

Gnome, Newegg also sells IOGear KVMs. I have one coming, a 4 port with 4 sets of 6' cables for $70.00 including shipping (sorry, they said, number of ports come in EVEN numbers or doubling multipliers (2,4,8,16), no 3 port KVMs which was what I needed). Will let you know if it works well or not. Belkin has USB 2 port KVMs also, and those can be gotten at NewEgg last I looked.

I can say he is competent with computers also-- he does, among other things, forum theming and that takes some coding skill. And anyone who can do carpentry can build a rack if needed to get boxes in as small a tall space as needed. I would say he is a good candidate, and of the bunch SimGuy is also good-- yes, I know we are not voting for who right now, but both those folks have impressed me with computer knowledge and skills. I am not perhaps the "old man" here, just an "older fart." That is a SOFT poke :D at Prime, not anyone else, and an inside joke that reminds me of a skit idea from WAY back (about 1.3 or 1.4 decades back) when that was admirably executed (should I go further, Prime??? :) )

You know, Freud would say that most women being narcissistic individuals are breaking away from their repressed role in society by being the opposite of their repression. That is to say, instead of being more proper as society does expect (Despite feminism and women's lib, or whatever the hell you wish to call it), they swing to the exact opposite and tend to pursue males merely in an attempt to satisfy their narcissistic streak, not for real love or for a relationship. "Look at me. I'm a real woman. I've broken away from the oppression." When in reality, they're doing nothing but admitting to the harshness of their reality, and acknowledging its presence. They consign themselves to a life of control that isn't theres. They're under someone ELSE'S control.

Males do the same thing in a different manner by aggressively, and overly so, pursuing females with the machismo complex. "Look at me, I'm a man. Women are just bitches and hoes anyways..." Narcissistic males become over-male, aggressive, domineering, etcetera. They essentially overcompensate, and they overcompensate for a tragic lacking in their "Manhood."

 :p
