Win MCE Question... [Archive]

A bud of mine had MCE on his Dell, but it's screwing up on him. I've been trying to see if I can get a copy of MCE so I can install just MCE becuase of all the crap that comes with Dell installations.

Can I even do this?

I want to install MCE and not all the crap that comes with Dell is all.

MCE is OEM-only. It can only be obtained by purchasing a PC or piece of hardware.

Newegg carries it for around $140, buy it and an IDE cable and you're golden.

Why buy when you already have? I was gonna download the CD but wasn't sure what to get becuase it seems there are 2 CD's and even a DVD version? Anyways, I recovered his computer, uninstalled all the crap, did some tweaking. Dunno if it was for nothing becuase CoD2 still wasn't working right. I think it might be the 1.3 patch though becuase we were able to play just fine before we installed it.

For MCE you need both CDs. The first is the OS (XP Pro SP2) and the second is the MCE addons. I've never played with the DVD version.

Thanks MadMat, we're still trying to determine if it's heat related trouble, Dell Bull**** addon trouble, or CoD Patch trouble, or one or more of those. Gonna be putting some AS5 in his system, it's a Dell XPS 200 and my thoughts are that there is not much room for cooling upgrades besides dusting and AS5.

I performed a system recovery, instaled CoD and played for a few minutes on single player, and a bit more on a server. Then installed the 1.3 patch and wasn't able to get into 15 servers I had tried, and 5 of those wer modless.

Whatw ould happen in CoD2 1.3 is that it would log into the server, if it had osmething to DL it would either partially DL it or not DL at all. Sometimes I would be able to get in to where it says Click to continue, but it wouldn't recognize my clicks, acting like it froze, but it was not frozen, and I would have to randly click buttons for it to get me out, sometimes it would go past that but it wouldn't recognize my character selection. as if it would stop recognizing all input after logging into a server.

Another probem he mentioned would be at the end of watching DVD's where it would studder and stop.

Seems heat related, but some of the issues I came across makes me question that. Especially since I had a big fan blowing cool air on it the whole time.
