DailyTech.com reports that ATI's board of directors has approved a planned 5.6 billion takeover bid for ATI Technologies.

The report said that the information was released by an investment banker that was part of the discussions. According to other sources, AMD executives were also seen at ATI's headquarters in Thornhill, Ontario.

According to Eric Gomberg, an analyst for investment bank Thomas Weisel Partners, "there has been considerable industry speculation that AMD may pursue an acquisition of ATI Technologies, although such an outcome is by no means certain." Gomberg's comment came in earlier this week, but word circulating around investment bankers who are aware of the talks between ATI and AMD surfaced just several hours ago.

Wow! This has been circulating a first a rumor then speculation. Now it appears that it is indeed quite true. I can't wait to see what this does for both companies! :D

i dont think nvidia will be very happy about this, seeing as they are the ones making the best chipsets for amd processors i wonder what their reaction will be.

I doubt NVidia will do anything, they've been building Intel based boards recently as well... as long as they can continue making money.

This could get interesting ...especially if Intel makes a counteroffer.

Nvidia is a huge hand in the GPU market, and AMD would be stupid to break ties with them even if they do own ATI... INtel seems to favor ATI more than Nvidia but it seems that may change... or we might just see Intel based GPU's
