Defiantely Final Fantasy VII (7). Reasons;

The character design is simply awesome. Cloud looks amazing, and his obscure past makes the game alot more involving, and also gets you to understand the characters more, by knowing their past. Sephiroth, cloud's arch enemy, is also a great character, not only because of his looks, but because of his mentality, the way he thinks, and his part in the storyline.
The storyline is involving, and alot of the twists and turns make it alot more fun.

i could go on, and on... Basically, i think Final Fantasy 7 is the best, and its my favourite game of all time!

:D

I'm not going to lie - I DID cry when Aeris died. FF7 just hit the nail on the head - it was the right game for the right time. It looked right, it played right, the story was incredible, the music was unbelievable, and the characters were so loveable. It was one of the only games ever where my wife actually stopped to "watch" because she was into the story. No other FF game has ever hit that magical formula just so. FF3 (US) (FF VI in Japan) was my second favorite.

I got one of them but can't remember which, about 4/5 years ago I think. I hated it and played about an hour before chucking it.
I may give 7 a go as everybody says it was so good but do you 'need' to play any others for it to make sense?

No, each game has it's own storyline and characters. Besides perhaps a few random references to other games, each game is unique and has nothing to do with the others (for the most part (X-2))

My favorite was FF Tactics..why isn't it up there? :(

You usually have to give it more than an hour try. I remember when I start FF7 it bored the hell out of me, and my cousin kept saying how good it was. About 3-4 hours into the game I go into it. And you'd think thats too long, but since the game itself is 70+ hours long, it's not too much to give it 3-4 hours.

Get FF Tactics or continue in your world of mediocrity, if you dare.

FF tactics i think was for the gamboy advance? also, crystal chronicles is missing from the list :) sorry to criticise.
I also have the soundtrack to FFVII on my computer, it's really good!

and yeah your right, it does take a few hours to get into a good rpg game. i used to hate the part at the start when you were in midgar, but as soon as you leave, its all good!

FF Tactics Advance is horrible compared to the original FF Tactics for PSOne.
Crystal Chronicles was disappointing too, but maybe because I only played the 1P game :-/

I heard they're remaking VII for PS3. I also saw the trailer, and if they do remake it, I'm getting PS3 just for VII.

I think 6 is the best. The characters are unique and have real, understandable motivations. None of the plot devices or character dialogue feel contrived. The plot is unpredictable and still just as good after my 6th time playing it. The game is hard enough to be challenging but not so hard as to make it frustrating. The music is nice too.

I liked 7 and I will admit I cried when Aeris died though I didn't play the game for nearly a month after that though. I think 7 is a great game but as far as impact on me goes it loses to 6.

Tactics was awesome and is also the hardest game I've ever played. There was a battle where you were supposed to defend this NPC, but the NPC got first turn and would always rush the bad guys and get killed before you got a turn (game over). The only time I beat it was when the bad guys got first turn and damaged the NPC enough to make it run away. The last 6 or so missions I completed with only one survivor in my party. The plot in that game is awesome but some of the characters' personalities can be frustrating.

I know it doesn't belong here, but Xenogears for PSX is also high in my favorite games of all time. I don't even rank it on the same scale as Final Fantasy. I can't say anything about the plot without spoiling it, but I will admit that it's the only other game besides FF7 that has gotten me to cry. Also, I played through Xenogears in a single 48-hour session (quite engaging).

Aside from Tactics and Tactics:Advance, FF1 is the best. I rock it old school on my NES.

I had FF1 and 2 for the DS I had a while back, I think I lost it though. I can't remember, but yeah it was ok.

I only played FFX, never finished it though. But it was pretty good too, I'd like to play FF7 and see what that is like, I love a game that can make me cry. But if they are making it for PS3, I might have to get the PS3 just for that game as well

I actually don't want to see any remakes. I'm alright with ports for keeping the stories alive, but I would like it much more if the dev teams and story writers come up with more original stories. It's a philosophical thing I can't really put into words.

I'm really looking forward to FFXII. I'm actually such a consumer whore that I've already reserved it. The few things I've heard about it sound good, like no load times going into battles. I like the general format of FF mechanics, but I'm in favor of minor changes that enhance gameplay that still appeal to the core audience.

FFXII seems kind of neat. I played the demo that came with Dragon Quest VIII, and it uses a battle system that is kind of like FFXI. I hope it's not like watching a movie (FF:X) and you actually get to have a bit more of an open-ended adventure.

I heard they let the team that did the original Final Fantasy Tactics work on FF XII so I'm also excited.

edit: The only way I would like to see a remake is if the comunity remakes it.

FF7 is the one that most people like because it was the one that introduced most people that hadn't heard of the title until 1997. It's also because of Clouds hair.

When i first heard of FF7, i was just making my way onto the RPG scene and i had gotten a wrong impression from the wrong people just about everything. I even dissed the game in as far as the graphics are mundane with a sword too big for cloud.

When i first played the game. Whole different story. I was on it non-stop. Especially after i got past the Shinra building from rescuing Aeris and was free to go to the world map....oh and the motorcycle jig was so awesome.

i think if a remake should be done, there should be a way to bring Aeris back to life, probably using "Holy" Materia and a story offshoot involving Yuffie. I mean FF7 is the best game i've ever played and it's nice to know some of us have our emotional sides despite our geekiness. Apparently i wasn't/am not one of them, i didn't cry when Aeris died, however i was in awe. My mouth dropped and stayed that way (and i think i may remember pausing the game) for at least a good half hour. Besides, i heard from the grapevine that the game was incomplete anyways due to release issues international and the original game team wanted to bring Aeris back anyways.....the programming ended with Aeris and the Church ghost scene.

I'm all in for the remake.....just please give it to the PSP and/or PS3, and oh yeah, bring Aeris back. I miss her already... *cries*
