A prequel, AKA, the best way to kick the Star Trek franchise square in the mouth when it's down.

Both of those points are still rumor at this point. In any case, I have an ounce of faith in JJ Abrams' ability to pull it off.

The poster alone supports the idea that it's a prequel. The starfleet insignia used is the one demonstrated in ST:ENT and ST:TOS. Like most Hollywood directors, I feel JJ Abrams is being blunt and giving us a prequel. I do not really feel that the throwback poster is an allegory to a new, post-Nemesis Starfleet that has returned to its roots of exploration.
