I was riding my bike near Charlevoix on Washington (two side streets in Clawson, MI) today at about four o'clock or three thirty when I came upon a four way stop (I was riding in the street). I slowed down at the stop, no one was coming, so I went through.

In the middle of the intersection I was hit by a cream-colored Volvo that blew the stop sign going about 30 MPH. My knee torqued against my bike and my arm broke or cracked their windshield. I was pretty disoriented, so I slid of the side of the hood and fell on the ground. The Volvo sped away, I didn't get a license plate number. All I know was a younger girl was driving, and there seemed to be an older male (Parent?) in the passenger seat.

Nothing is broken, no fractures, and suprisingly no cuts. Somehow I managed not to hit my head. I'm lucky to be alive. There weren't any witnesses.

Ouch. I hate people like that. My cousin was riding his bike about 3 years back, and doctor hit him, even though there was a stop sign right there. My cousin was fine, but the guy was still nice enough to ask him if he needed to go to the hospital or something, although I doubt that was from the goodness of his heart. Probably didn't want an increase in insurance rates. Anyway, Hope you're okay.

Did you call the police?

Did you call the police?

Yes, I made a full report with the police in the city of the accident.

Glad to hear you're okay. Hit and run is a serious offense. I hope they catch the dumbass.

We had a hit and run of a different kind at work the other day. We were getting a diesel delivery and the delivery guy took the side view mirror off the car of one of the factory workers. We caught it on one of our security cameras and there were numerous eyewitnesses. After he realized he hit the car, he stopped, got out, checked out the car, got back in, and drove further down the street to where the diesel tank was.

In the video, you can see the truck actually shaking the car as it drives away. In spite of all this damning evidence, the driver still insisted he never hit the car. He delivered the fuel while the guy whose car was hit took down the company name and license plate from the truck and called the cops. The driver left before the cops came, which made it into a hit and run.

Our president called the company and was told nothing could be done since the driver insisted he never touched the car. I think they even remarked their driver wasn't there that day. Funny, because we received an invoice for fuel delivery. Funny thing is the accident took place on 8/4 but they put down the delivery day as 8/3. What dicks! Every time our president calls they leave him on hold for at least a half hour.

So he decided there was only one thing to do. He deducted $220 for the repairs to the car from the bill. If they want their money, they're going to have to call us.

Yikes, Nomad... :(

I've been riding my bike like crazy for the past month or so. There have been a few times where I've thought about skipping the helmet, but after hearing your story I don't think I'm likely to be tempted like that again anytime soon.

I'm glad you're (relatively) uninjured. :)

My friend Anders' parents are huge bike riders, they did this BAK (bike across kansas) thing. They always critisize anyone they see riding without a helmet, its so fun riding with them when they see someone biking.

Tell the police to call the local auto-glass shops with the description of the Volvo, it is after all hit and run and you could be hurt in ways that you don't know yet.

I've, stupidly, never ridden with a helmet, even when I go on some pretty intense mountain biking trails.

If Nomad is right about it being a parent with the young girl driving, good old dad probably thought about what her (or his) insurance rate was going to look like and figured he'd save a few bucks.

Scum. :shakehead

And if he gets caught his insurance rate will be the last thing he needs to worry about, cause he may not need a car.

I hope he gets caught then, I hate reckless drivers, period. It's makes me so happy when I (rarely) see the jerkoff weaving in and out of traffic get caught by the police. The #1 reason I don't change lanes often is becuase of bikers... Although it's the bikers who can be the most reckless as well but not as often as vehicles(though there are more vehicles on the road also).

Nomad, it's good to hear you're ok man. But in the next reply you make, include pics of the new helm  I've seen guys also wearing what looks like flak jackets, appearently kevlar coated and hard plastics.. lots of them here in Dallas. Back in Houston no one ever wore helmits. heh.

I'm glad you're not hurt, and I'm glad you're getting a helmet. I hope the jerks get caught.
