Greetings programs! (name the movie!)
I'm considering replacing my MP3 player. I've got a Sony/Philips 512MB player now (the round one with the armband) and I'm thinking of switching. The Nike does fine, but there's hardware out there that's smaller and holds more.
Specificially, I'm looking at a 1 or 2 GB Ipod Nano. I've seen the reviews, but they seem inconsistent...some people say excellent sound quality, some say poor. I'll use this mostly for running music (working out), but might also use it at my desk at work.
Suggestions? Get the Nano, get something else, or just use and be happy with what I got?
Thanks!

you might check creatives lineup (http://creative.com/products/welcome.asp?category=213), lately they have been coming out with some great looking flash players.

If you're going to get a Nano, get one of the new ones, the original version had screen scratching problems. Nano's are more reliable than the video iPods, because they are not hard disk based (Correct me if I'm wrong).

i have owned a 20gb ipod (non-color), 512mb ipod shuffle, and now a 2gig ipod black nano. not saying its bad, but the nano's sound quality has be the worst of the 3. i have one of the original models, so the quality might be better with a newer revision. they are great for running etc, since they do not have a hdd.

I'm pretty sure it is flash based, and if you are going to be exercising with it, that is what you want because no moving parts = no skipping.

yea the nano is flash based so like airborn said there should be no skipping. I have an ipod photo and I really love it.
Watch out there are alot of ipod haters on here so you'll hear alot of crap about them. Kinda like how hardcore linux users say windows is terrible and you'l die if you use it.

I have a Sansa e140 1GB Flash player. I lent it to a buddy and he asked his mom to get one. His mom got him an iPod instead and he threw a fit at his Mom to take it back and get him the Sansa. Not saying it sounds any better then an iPod, I'm not an audiophile, but I did get a pair of Sennheisers for it after reading some ePinions. I gave my wife a Creative Muvo 512 and thought it was fine. My Girlfriend picked up a Sony bean (Which has better sound than the Sansa BTW) but had trouble with it as she's technologically challenged and you cannot drag & drop mp3s into it. The Sansa is great for that, just drag and drop mp3s or anything else for that matter. I also use it as Flash storage. You can also add an SD card for increased storage although 1 GB is fine for me. It also has an FM radio which is nice. There's no mic in case you want to take notes to yourself. Uses 1 AAA battery.

oh hell, I got my brother a sansa for christmas last year, and it works well, not the best audio, and not the most rugged, but I was fine with that, but the will scroll wheel thing/volume control wheel is already broken, and he is carefull with it, it isnt broken off or anything, but if you try and scroll, it jumps all over, same with the volume, it is very sporatic, I wouldnt touch one, and would avoid it like the plague. Sandisk is a fine memory manufacture, but in my experience not a mp3 player manufacture.

Man...what ever happened to gratitude? We're it my kid throwing a fit over an electronic doodad that I've graciously provided, I'm pretty sure my immediate reaction would NOT be to run right out and correct my "mistake". On the other hand, the best correction to said mistake might be to take it back, and get myself the Nano instead. Followed by the question, "Now Junior...what have you learned??? What's that....I couldn't hear you...my new Nano was turned up too loud!!!"! :rarr:

yeh, I would rather have a nano over the sandisk. Dont know who would throw a fit like that, the nanor is like $150, and the sansa is around $80 or so. I would do that too, if my brother would have thrown a fit about the mp3 player I got him, I would have taken it too. although, Im just glad he didnt know that it was a cheapy like I did, but after I bought him a 1gig sd card and some other things, I spent over $100 on his butt.

heh, I was just expressing confusion about how threads get hijacked by association. Concerning the friend in question.. (let's just call him Jim) I argued with Jim about the iPod and told him to keep it as it was a better mp3 player then the Sansa. But the simple fact of the matter is, he got used to the functions of the Sansa. Jim’s spoiled, richer then dirt and like me, he’s obviously not an audiophile.
My Sansa hasn't given me any problems whatsoever, then again, I've only had it 6 months. I love it, I’ve handled an iPod and was impressed with the sound, but I wouldn’t trade my Sansa for it. It does everything I want it to and more. I’ve even used it to transfer photos from an Sdcard when my gf forgot to bring the USB cord for her camera.

if it works for ya, then good, but the one my bro has is working fine except for that little rotary wheel thing, it is sporatic at best, hope the same thing doesnt happen to yours.

Are there any mp3 players besides Ipods that will read AAC files? Also, is it possible for Itunes to upload to any other any other portable audio players besides Ipods?

I purchased an Mpio just last week. Its so cute and pink for a 1GB. The only problem is, when I switch it to Music Play, some of the songs won't play and it freezes. Sometime when the song is over, it freezes at the end. But when I leave it on MTP, everything works fine. So I might just get a replacement or an exchanged. I hope it's not the song files being ripped to 160 or 192 kbps.

I have the Sandisk Sansa C150 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855125015) and I'm pretty satisfied with it myself. I find the sound quality to be decent and so far it's held up well for me (got it in April). I also like the fact that it uses 1-AAA battery instead of having an unreplaceable rechargeable battery like an Ipod nano. It's also a 2 GB model and now it's less than $100 at the Egg. The biggest drwback I have with it is that it doesn't like dragging and dropping to it. I have to use WMP10 to transfer my mp3 files to it. If you try to drag and drop music to it, it seems to lock up if you do more than 1 file at a time. Other than that though, I'm satisfied with it. I presently use it with a set of Bose Quiet Comfort 2 over-the-ear headphones and it's amp puts out enough to drive them decently loud.
