Welcome to the wonderful world of Folding, kmc. It can be addictive, so be aware. Once you start gathering a few points and getting a few milestones under your belt there may be a few challengers ahead. (refer..."The Gauntlet" thread, lol.)

Each different protein is of a different size and hence the time to process each varies. The larger the WU, the longer it takes and the more points they are worth. At the moment i'm doing one on my P4 2.4G notebook and it will take around 38 hrs.

Hope this will give you an idea how the points work.

Broadband makes it very simple to download/upload. Does it all by itself, just too easy.

Hi!

My name is Austin and I'm a 27 yr old hailing from Sugarland, TX.

My hobbies include (but is not limited to) staring at cubicle walls. When I'm not staring at cubicle walls, I'm usually preoccupied with sharpening pencils.

I've been lurking @ S-M for quite some time now. I've only recently joined due to a malfunction in my pencil-sharpener at the office. This led to excessive viewing of raunchy material on the web whilst at work, and subsequently downloaded free cool web software such as coolwebsearch.

Anywho, I decided to start folding@home for various reasons:

1) Physically folding origami was damn near impossible.
2) Pretty colors. I love 'em.
3) I will have to find a new hobby soon; I'm moving out of the cubicle
4) Chicks will dig me.. more so.
5) I have loved ones who are close to me that would benefit from these types of discoveries.

I don't mind a good laugh, but if the joke is extremely bad, you will be reprimanded. If the joke is completely and utterly bad, it's ok. I'll still laugh. ;)

C'yall!

just started folding (i think). well, looks like it's doing something. my WU says it'll end 52 days from now, so i'll be pretty tired by then (i have this stupid habit of watching computers crunch numbers as if i'm afraid they will stop if i don't monitor them).

my name is Rick. been in the computer industry since the days we used teletypes and paper tape readers for consoles. (i can hear all the "what is he talking about?s" out there).

Welcome icehole. Always nice to see members introduce themselves. Bit of an "oldie" myself at this end, name is Jon from Perth in Western Australia.

In regards to doing a WU in 52 days, i have seen posts in the folding section where it's mentioned about timeless WU's for older/slower computers. If in doubt about anything, just post a new thread in the same section where you placed your introduction. Unfortunately i don't know too much about the setting up of the folding, that is my wife's job (the Handbrake).

Make a note of the P**** number of your protien and check the time Stanford would like it done by, by going here.

The parts of UD you can do where they make a profit are optional. I only crunch for finding a cure for cancer, nothing else. So, to my mind, the profit making argument is mute.

24 Oct 2004, 07:17am
Thought I would rewrite my entry, as a fair bit has changed.

My name is Rob, I'm 18, and I've been a member of Icrontic/Short-Media for just about three years. I signed up in december of 2001 to post a smidge of help for someone who was having trouble with their video card: They had a Visiontek geforce card, and apparently a ton of them had been released without the plastic adhesive strip removed from the bottom of the GPU HSF. I suggested he check that. But I wasn't an active member until the summer of 2002. I was around for about a year, then Icrontic got hacked in the summer of '03. Then a year later, here we are, in the fall of '04.

Born just outside of Detroit in Royal Oak. I currently attend Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI for a bachelor's in Computer Engineering Technology. I don't work at the moment, sadly, but I usually tackle five or six places a week in hopes I can land one. My primary hobby is the computer, and I've been quite into it for four years thus far. My other interests include other geeky things like Star Wars (I roleplay; currently coauthoring a novel which I hope to have published), Star Wars D20 RPG, D&D, crappy old cult films, I was a Tolkien fan before it was trendy to be one, I'm a writer of sorts, I dabble heavily in media transcoding/encoding (SECAM/PAL/NTSC conversions, DiVX/XViD/MPEG2/etc. conversions). In more scholarly interests, I prefer philosophy, public speaking, debate, politics and history.

I generally avoid pop culture; I've not listened to the radio in five years. I don't generally watch TV even when I'm near one. My best friends are John, Jason, Sean and Alison. I'm only as social as my options. I do not drink, do not do drugs, do not party, and do not go to the clubs. I will never drink, do drugs, or go clubbing.. I might party if the environment is right.

I'm generally a conservative except when it comes to gender/sexual issues, otherwise I adopt a fairly liberal stance. After reading a lot of what Prime has said, and silently reading his Buddhism forum, I've begun to thoroughly explore that path. I don't want to say "I'm Buddhist!" because that sounds, I dunno, stupid coming from me. I don't know when I'll ever be able to say that I am, but I truly believe that all the good in the world will not come from a god, but by man bettering themselves, and transforming their worldly desires into motivation for Virtue and Goodness. A lot of what the belief structure says resonates in me, and it's motivated me to become a better person.

My main musical interests include trance (Please, I beg of you not to think club music or remixes; this is not trance), industrial (KMFDM, Melotron, Covenant), 80s pop (Duran Duran, Styx, Aha), 80s/90s hair bands (Van Halen, Pantera, Dokken, Motley Crue), classic rock (Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mountain, Deep Purple, King Crimson) and movie scores (FoTR trilogy, Gladiator, Passion of the Christ; epic, non-vocal, orchestral arrangements).

Ex-EverQuest player. Generally I enjoy first person shooters, fighting games, and RTS games. I like hanging out with my friends every night, I like college. I wish I had a talent outside of computers, but I don't that I've found. If I'm not on Short-Media, I'm pounding out articles, browsing the internet, or listening to music and hanging out with people.

If I were to tell you what other people have said directly to me...

Warm
Compassionate
Logical
Prophet-like
Brilliant
Good-natured
Well-humoured
Tolerant
Accepting
Sarcastic
Freaky and soulless, like a robot

You guys may look at that list and say "WTF?!" but I **** you guys not. People have said this to me. Brian said something to me once over the summer that I took to heart: "I hate Thrax, but I like Rob." And I realized that there was something of a strong difference between what I came across as online, and who I really was online. That sucked. So I've been trying to rebuild some burned bridges, and tone myself down. I've begun to analyze what's different between Rob and Thrax, and why they're different. I hope you guys have begun to see the results. I don't want to be the old Thrax. I just want to be me.

That's pretty much it. Later guys.

Name's Dan, been folding on and off for about 2 yrs. Used to be the Marketing/PR director for OCAddiction until Sept 03 when i was supposed to go to write for Adrenaline Vault, but decided i was burnt out on the hectic schedule of full time work/full time site dedication. So i took a year off completely from harcore computers, and downgraded my pelt cooled monster first back to water then back to air.
I'm 34, married for 10 yrs w/ 4 kids (twin 18 yr old stepsons, 5 yr old son, 2 yr old son). enjoy spending time w/ my kids (full time stay at home dad right now, but looking to get back into the workforce full time), as well as restoring/working on cars. Used to be a die hard domestic muscle car guy, but the last 1 1/2 years have been addicted to 240SX's and drifting. currently on my third 240 and have been lucky enough to build the previous two and sell for a very nice profit...this one is prolly in the worst shape of them all mechanically, but the body is good and im happy..i hate body work..

anyway, unfortunately the passing of Mortin is what brought me here, but i have been looking to get back in to the pc thing and so far S-M seems to be a pretty cool place so i joined the F@H team, and expect to hang around and annoy the shiz out of you all...

Firstly, I just want to apologize to anyone if they think that I’ve been annoying coz' I know that I may have been.

I've been wanting to post in this thread for a while but honestly I’ve been too nervous/scared but for some reason I feel that I should introduce myself better, if I may?

Today is my 3 months anniversary to SM :)

Now Me!
My name is Saqib - Hope you guys can Pronounce it!?
I'm 17 years old!

I'm currently at college (my 2nd year) and doing a business course. My life is pretty simple, as simple as this, I wake up etc, go college (when necessary), come home, sit @ computer (hang at SM), Eat & sleep - pretty simply :p but I’m not lazy and I do work hard :D

I like football aka soccer to most of you and tennis. I support Manchester United but i'm sure you guys already guessed that :). The biggest club in the world, Honestly :D

How I found SM
It was really to do with Broswer Hijacking. I had Searchweb200 (or something) and through Yahoo! I ended up here ay great SM where Dexter helped me for the very first time so THANK YOU :). Since then I've been coming everyday and have met and been helped by a lot of great people so THANK YOU ALL :).

Lastly, i'm trying to join Team93 but a bit  but i'm getting there I hope.

Anyways, sorry for the long post and i'm glad to be here with nice people

Welcome!!

That was me asking that question about hyper threading and two processors. :D That was about a year and a half ago. And look what has happened to me since. I am now one of the top 20 producers for the folding team "93" and have climbed to position 20 as well. The group here at Short-Media is quite amazing and diverse. Every time I have needed help in my noob quest for understanding these infernal machines, I have always gotten the answer quickley and courteously. These guys and gals are awesome. I felt that folding for the team would be a small gesture of thanks. Well a year and a half later I am totaly addicted to folding and counting points. I now have a nice "Farm" of 9 machines folding. And have plans for more. It is a lot of fun.

So welcome to the team ! And if you need help with anything, you are in the right place. Just ask.

Hi,
I'm Greg Mann from Eureka, California. I've been folding for team 93 about a week now. I'm quite happily married to Diane (23 years). I have two daughters ages 29 and 18 both are out on their own ;o) I drive a 1970 Volvo 142s that needs paint.
I work as a Help Desk Tech for the local County Govt. (3 yrs) I love spending most of my time in front of a monitor studying what is on the net/repairing PC's and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Spiritually I'm an ECKist. I love the light and sound of God. I am no longer interested in drugs or smoke. The parties I attend are centered on conversation and food. I do enjoy smooth Jazz and most music with good clear vocals. (That doesn’t include rap.)
I'm a Linux newbie I've installed Linspire 4.5 & Ubuntu my goal includes Debian.
I do have a couple of old boxes folding 24/7 one running Ubuntu and folding from a terminal window. In my opinion that's mighty slow but my knowledge of folding could use a lot of improvement.
I have a P4 3400 cpu, Intel D915PBLL mb, and XP on the way.
My main box is a Dell Precision Workstation 620 that is about 4 yrs old running Win XP.
CPU: Xeon 933 w/256K Cache
Ram: 4x 256 Mgs RamBus
Drives:2 SCSI LVD 160s @ 10K rpm, Boot Partition 13Gig holds XP and Progs. / Work Partition 54 Gig has Data/downloads/MP3s; 2nd Drive 17Gig Images and Power Quests Data Keeper is mirroring my data folder on the work partition.
I joined Short-Media because it's such an awesome team with great Spirit and folding anonymously wasn’t much fun. I fold because - Why not it may help and I’ve had several relatives and friends translate (leave their human form permanently) after suffering from terrible diseases.
at cox.net I'm volvomann ;o)

Well, not drive exactly. I used to, until it stopped starting. Lately I haven't had the time and money to fix it, since my other car is having major mechanical difficulties too. Well, not drive exactly. I used to, until it stopped starting. Lately I haven't had the time and money to fix it, since my other car is having major mechanical difficulties too. I might have it running again "soon" though...
You are not likely to pick up any manufacturer's endorsement as a result of that post.

Just thought I'd mention it... :hiding:

i.e if there is a problem i have to find a way to fix it Just think, by tapping into the collective experience here, you'll be able to fix just about anything on a PC. Your family will be astonished, your friends will be admiring, neighbors will nod their head in approval.... the city council will notice, you'll be famous! :D Well, just a little bit of exaggeration here - but not much!

Unless you have a dual-CPU computer or a computer with HyperThreading, you don't want to run more than one client at a time. Since you mentioned that your son is the family computer expert, you might want to wait and have him take a look at it before you do anything else.

As far as being a "dumbass", each and every person at this site was the same way at some point in their life. Stick around the forums and after a very short time that label will no longer apply. Then you will be the one showing your son how it's done. :D

It sounds like you downloaded the program to your desktop and installed it from there. The console version installs itself to whatever folder it's in when you run the installation. What I'd suggest is that you wait until the current WU is finished, uninstall the program, then copy the installation program to a new folder in C:\Program Files\your new folder and reinstall it from there.

That will eliminate the mess of icons on your desktop and reduce the chances that you'll accidently delete something (or have Windows automatic desktop cleanup delete it for you...)

You're on the right track, just need a little tweaking - which is why I can tell you that you're lucky to be on such a great team as ours. We have the best experts in the business.

I heard about short-media by word of mouth of 3 of my fellow classmates, Park_7677, AuthorityAction(or whatever name he uses now), and Zero1. I have very much so enjoyed my stay here so far and I plan to stay here a long time. I recently started folding and just completed my first WU today. I also finished my new computer that I worked my ass off and then some to get(7 months just for the pc, no monitor, etc.) I work at Fazoli's, an Italian fast food restaurant. I make minimum wage but it's a lot of fun. Larry, AKA mtgoat, has helped me tremendously with the building of my new PC and I respect him greatly for that and the great person he is. I just wish I was here earlier. I enjoy computers and music, mainly Rivers Cuomo and Weezer. I plan on going to college in the field of computers but haven't completely decided exactly what yet. I plan on being here a long while.

While I may be not completely sold on joining Folding@Home yet, I may be lurking here and drop a post in now and then- so I decided to give you a clue-

Name: K.
Occupation: Med student and athlete
PC: Souped up AMD 2600+ I'm planning to replace with an X2-style system

Interest in Folding@Home: Becoming more than casual.

I started in the Short-Media forum by clicking on a reference link while looking for PC information. The quality of the info I got here was over the top compared to what I'd been seeing- so I decided to look around.

Believe it or not, I only vaguely remember hearing of FAH, and I'm kind of surprised it's not been talked about more. But then again if it's not school it's sports ... yadda, yadda. Though my studies may not take me into genetic research, every med student takes the classes. So I wandered over to the Stanford forums and started looking at the write-ups and downloading some of the research. While I can't tell you in detail what they are doing yet, I can say that they have only scratched the surface of what is out there- even towards what they hope to accomplish. I can also tell you that parallel processing + distributive computing is the ONLY way I can think of right now to process the physics. The job is not just large ... huge and staggering are only simple adjectives ...

To solve for the simple elements involved is tough enough and it gets even more complicated when you start trying to simulate how they bond, construct, etc. In my case I have more questions now about media, contaminants, introduction of heavier elements- uh, let's not go there. Let's just say I have a lot to start going through in what may wind up in my own research.

Dang. And school isn't even in ....

But I've also lost some friends and relatives ... so I want to at least post here and say thanks to everyone for giving more than just intentions.

Well, I may join this team to help fold but I might be spending more time nagging Vijay & Co.

:)

Hi all! I am quite new to all this...I found my way to the forums just the other day while trying to help a friend with her infected computer...I hope I get a reply soon for her sake! I'm in college and have been spending what little free time I have on trying to learn more about computers...I really envy my guy friends who are computer gurus and hate having to ask them stupid questions. Since I've been reading the forums frequently since happening upon them and find the members here to be kind and helpful, I decided I wanted to contribute to the site by joining folding at home...can't really contribute any knowledge yet unfortunately! Well im 23 & I m married, I work for Fleetwood Homes & I aslo own my own company! I should say companies. www.mandmcr.com and M.E. Consulting. I went to college in Arizona and got my BA in commecial & residential Design, and I currently work on 3D garphics of houses, buildings, pools, ponds and landscape.... I love my job... but my Main passion is computers. I love to build them breaking them and fixing them.

I have found myself in on Folding for less tahn a day and I am freaking going crazy about...you guys are right it is addicting....I plan to run Folding as long as i can and help team 93 get into the top 10. I can only hope my 22 CPU's will help, I am working on getting another 8 to add to my banK :)

I am a big computer guy, I love to build them and fix them and upgrade like weekly...It is a really bad habbit. but If you ever need a part of a computer built give me a call, as I can work some magic. http://www.mandmcr.com

I don't think i've ever introduced myself to all of you.

My names Trent, i live in a boring old place called Olathe (suburbs of the ghetto known as Kansas City) in the far upper west part of kansas. I was first lead here way back when about 3 years ago for problems with a toolbar i couldn't get rid of, I had remembered about this site about 4 months ago and thought i'd check up on it and see what the forums are like and have been hooked on short-media like stink to **** ever since! ;D . I heard about folding and jumped on the train immediatly because a very loved and close cousin of mine has parkinsens disease and it has caused many difficulties in her life (She owns a salon and was the head stylist there) and i thought this would be a way to help her. You guys have been great help with any problems i have had and i appreciate that very much.

My hobbies also include: Long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, working out, and a good portion of METAL with every day.

Well Hello all, my name is Sean and I live in Denver Colorado. I'm kinda new to folding as I had a really old machine folding a few years back. I am 23 years young and am currently a student at Westwood College, I am seeking my BA in ISS (Information System Securities) I also run a part time computer repair shop out of my home. For fun I like to go fishing, build models, and play around on my computers (I have 8 of them running at the moment, which will get put online within the next couple of days to start folding) I stumbled upon this team and forum group when looking for SiS drivers for my sisters computer, so I figured I could do something usefull and make my machines fold. So here I am!!! ;D :smokin:

I'm Robert. I go by Rob. I'm 19, and I work at Best Buy.. I work there because I can't afford to go to school. I play World of Warcraft. I like fruit loops, sunsets, long walks on the beach.. :range: No no, wait.. I like AMD, video games, anything remotely nerdy (Except for LARP, those dorks). I hate pocket lint, the people I service at my job, grits, zucchini, the number 90.. And I think the sun has legs; I haven't been out in a while to check.

I write.

Cheers.

Well I don't have much to say, but I got a new comp, and was wondering why it said I have dual procs so i looked and came upon the forum and then got my answer the lovely HT Intel has fooled me. So I looked into what the folding biz was about and said to self, " Self what the heck, your at college and you leave your computer on 24/7 so why not, besides I don't pay the bill anyway." So thats when I decided to DL the proggy and give it a whirl. Sounds like a good cause, Just wondering is there any way to be MORE active, I like the feeling of being in a community that does good things.

P.S I'm going to get some buddies to run the proggy on there comps "I'll see who I can get.

P.S.S Anyone want to explain how to setup diskless nodes, cause I got a friend that owns an ISP and he has a gaming Center on the other side of his office,
I'll see if I can run some comps there on his 100Mbps connect.

Drewb, if you enable hyperthreading, you can run TWO instances of Folding@Home running. A P4 HT with two instances of Folding is a potent point producer. I've got two such setups.

Leonardo
15 Nov 2005, 08:06am
Drew,

There are a several ways to make HT enabled machines efficiently process two F@H clients simultaneously.

1. Run a graphical client and console client (two clients) on the same machine. But don't run two graphical (GUI) clients simultaneously.
2. Run two console clients simultaneously, but name each .exe file differently, such as FAHxyz - Console I.exe in one client folder and FAHxyz - Console II.exe in another. When set these up, during the installation a DOS Window will appear, in which you put different entries, such as your Folding user name, and team number (we are 93). In this window it will also prompt you to give a machine number, choices 1 through 8. Ensure that each client is given a different number! (BTW, the reason I change the console.exe names is so that it's easier to track folding progress in pop-up text files and through monitoring programs such as Electron Microscope.)
3. Installing folding in mulitple instances as a service. Involves some minor coding. Drasnor has written thorough piece, here (http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=293) .

There are a bunch of threads on the topic of dual instances of Folding on single computers. I suggest an advanced search for "instances" under the "Folding @ Home" forum.

Hi.

The forum seems to be quite US-based. So there's a certain exotic moment in my writings I guess :D

My real name is Andres and I'm from Estonia. (no, it's not the same as Russia)
I'm 26, working full time as a school psychologist. In the meantime I try to complete my master's degree studies in the same field.
I'm new to the forum as a registered user, but not as a guest. Being by no means a computer specialist, I have excessively (ab)used your guides for my own (and not only my own) computer problems. That is the second important reason I joined folding@home. The main reason is my natural sympathy (call it professional idiocy if you want) for those with disabilities. If I can be of any help, good.
And oh, thanks to short media team for their hard work!

Leonardo

Thank you so much for joining Team 93. We are very dedicated to the Folding project. Check out our "SMx" project. These are computers that the team owns, hosted by individual team members. All the parts for these computers were donated directly by members or were purchased through member donations. Some of these machines are named in honor of team members' deceased family members, some of whom succumbed to diseases Folding@Home's research may someday help solve.

Our site is predominately North American by membership, but we are indeed international. We welcome the variety of thought, personality, and perspective that comes with a broad base of membership. Please be active here! By the way, your English is excellent!

Thanks for the welcome.
My english skills are a bit overrated, I guess. It's still more a 'translation' than natural language.
I try to be active. I'm a dumbuser, so beware of millions of stupid questions about the computer on my desk from now on :)
And yeah, you may ask me millions of stupid questions about 'the computer in your head' in return if you wish :D

By the way, this not-so-stupid-text-console (or whatever) of F@H ended installing itself kind of weirdly: just stopped doing anything and stood there, not showing anything like 'installation complete' or whatever they usually say. After reboot, the process list shows 2 FAH processes running, though. So I may expect it's OK?

Occupation: Currently a golf professional, giving lessons and working as an assistant pro. I have been a teacher, a golf pro, a flow systems technician, a construction worker, an account executive for a digital pen company and i am sure I will be a bunch of other stuff.

Bit About Me: I love living in Shanghai. Chinese women are beautiful and kind.
I have my own religion but I have not worked out all the details yet. I only know it is as far away from organized religions can be and probably in the same zip code as buddhism.
I really don't know that much about computers, but i am learning.
I first started serious PC gaming with Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I was on several competition teams and help to start a clan (that is still actually together and running one of the few active servers left out there. a destruction server that still gets good traffic)
I left RTCW when my life was consumed by World of Warcraft. I started palying in November of 04 and didn't have to get gas in my vehicle until February 05 (and i had a gas guzzler)...i played a lot...i had to leave the game and attempt to regain my life. i have been marginally successfull.

oh..and i started folding about 45 minutes ago...these guys helped me fix a computer problem. they were kind and incredibly patient. they won me over and i am happy to contribute. right now i am using a laptop that i use at home and work, so it is not online 24/7, but i will contribute anyway i can.

Thanks and it is good to be here,

Gino

i do think CSS looks good, but i am only interested in it because the footage i saw in PurePwnage.com

i am out of commission though, game wise, until i get a new rig here in china. this laptop won't really run anything worth playing...

Hi!:type:
I just started folding. I love science and computers and F@H combines the 2 in a great way.
I am a writer by trade- science fiction, horror, short fiction, poetry etc...
Nothing published yet although I am working on a novel that has garnered interest. My main influences are H.P. Lovecraft, Isaac Asimov, Gene Roddenberry, Stephen King, Aleister Crowley and Edgar Allan Poe.
I am also a student studying computers- mainly interested in web development, networking, servers, programming and creating a security suite that actually works!
I have been interested in computers since the TI/99 but have been out of the computer world for about 7 years +. Unbelievable !! = the horsepower underthe hood of a personal computer these days! Another reason that the F@H is a good Idea and time has come. I have 2 much more powerful computers (P4 3.0GHz 2GB ram and 2.4GHZ 256 MB ram) that I will not put online - I am in shock over th capabilities of these 2 rigs(and I know there are higher specs out there and growing all the time!). Is there a way to use these computers to fold without having them directly connected to the internet? I also have 2 Quad Pro 200MHZ PP servers that at least one could bet set up to fold- I currently do not want these online either - not until I have learned more about security programming.
I love arcade games and also used to play alot of AD@D but spent much time travelling after high school- Hawai and hitchiked across Canada 4 times!
I also love Star Trek and european beer!

Donnie Stevens
25 yrs old
Boston MA

I joined this site a little over a year ago as a coked up alcoholic a55ho1e.

I am an Army veteran who served as a team leader in a battalion scout/recon team in the 82nd. I joined when I was 17, we went to and partied in Egypt, Isreal and Haiti. I got a little crazy in Egypt and was the "soul contributer to an international incident" the army came to a mutual decision with myself to let me leave with an honorable discharge but earlier than I had expected.

I got out and went everywhere. I had all the cars, boats, motorcycles and women I could handle because I had the drugs. I was dealing pretty heavy and thought I was tough. I was all about image. I was 5' 9" 215lbs. and benching 405lbs. I lived in San Diego, Naples FL, Phoenix AZ etc. etc. I went to schools all over too but for my own business courses. SDSU, ASU, UCF I even managed to graduate Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix AZ as a Honda/Kawasaki tech.

Anyways my image did'nt last so long and I ended up as nothing but a homeless washed up addict and fiend. Less than a year ago after getting out of jail I went on a mind clearing binge that blew out my mind landing me in a mental institution. I've done well since then with the help of some really great people in the VA hospital. I'm back in school to actually do something, A+ certification, and I'll have a federal job soon working for the IT dept at the Boston VA. A lot of things have changed since I started here with team SM.. I'd like to see it continue. I plan to be back folding ASAP.

Hello my name is Mark,
im 46 and live in Reno Nevada. Life to me has been 1 big rollercoaster ride (mostly downhills). I built my first car when I was 10, I worked as a machinist, mechanic, car painter, auto stereo designer, Vacuum Tech at Stanfords Linear Accelerator, carpenter, general contractor and on and on. Mechanicaly I am gifted but my head is :hair: I have traveled to Japan, Korea, Mexico.

Its always been hard to stick with anything but as I have gotten older the one remaining joy in my life has been helping others. I moved to Reno a few years ago (homeless) and ended up running a transistional housing project helping others to get back on their feet. I did that for 3 years till the Catholic church here in Reno in all their wisdom figured it was not making enough money.

A couple of years ago I helped this guy by fixing his truck. He didnt have any money but he said he had a computer shop and if I ever needed computer help to just ask. Well my last experience with computers was my VIC-20 which ended up in the closet after the second week. (lol, $1300 paperweight) So for 20 something years I was computerless. Well I looked him up and he let me hang around and watch him work. He was this huge Latino guy covered with tatoos.(im 6'1' and 500lbs) he had learned the computer trade in Prison and was so gifted in Programing (the one thing I barely know). We complemented each other cause I was good at the building part and he did the programing.
The only problem was he seemed to have a dark cloud following him everywhere, no matter how much I tried to help he jusk kept making bad desisions till one night someone shot him. To this day I wish I had been able to steer him to a different path.

Well now I live in a house and do odd jobs to help others. Its a lot of fun and gives me a chance to help as well.

Hello! My name is David. I joined Team 93 because Short-Media provided me with some great information in the forums that helped me fix up my computer system, so I feel a little loyalty is due from me to Short-Media.

By day, I am an Equipment Eng for a well known semiconductor company, but at quitin' time, I am transformed into a FPS Gamemaster, wreaking havoc on all those who would destroy Earth, combating evil, and laying waste to aliens in numbers so great, that on occasion, the gorefest even turns my own stomach. After securing the planet and laying down my smokin' weapons, it is time to enjoy a well deserved, hero's beer.

Okay, okay, so when I'm not in gameland or working, I practice shooting my real guns, reload my own ammunition, build computers for friends and family (along with tech support from Hell), BBQ on my giant smoker pit or grill on my Weber, landscape, spend time with my wife, new son, and hang out with my older boys, wrestle my Siberian Husky (he's tough!), and do a little woodworking. And not necessarily in that order. Oh, and spending WAY too much time in Fry's Electronics -- DAMN THEM!! Which reminds me... I should tell you that my wife refers to my computer as my "square headed girlfriend." Well, at least my "girlfriends" are folding for a good cause!

Well, I guess better late than never.

I am seventeen years old, currently living in Enid, Oklahoma, a small little town of 50k, I attend Enid High School, where I will be starting my senior year; I currently carry a 3.84 GPA. I am taking classes that focus on my computer science/software engineering degree, such as AP Computer Science this year; I also am taking 3 hours of college classes (English) as concurrent enrollment. I plan to attend either OU or OSU the fall of '07 where I hope to major in computer science or software engineering. At school, I am on the yearbook staff where I serve as the Editor of Sports, Editor of Photography, Head Photographer, and am second in command so to speak. I am responsible for all images that are in the book, as well as making sure people are making their deadlines:ninja:

I enjoy working on computers, and have from about the age of 11 or so, when out family got our first computer (Pentium 233/win 95). I attend Cedar Ridge Wesleyan Church. I am also a member of the Great Salt Plains Council Boy Scout Troop 2. I am a life scout working on my eagle project currently, which I plan to have completed by early January.

I enjoy building and tinkering with just about anything that can be, be it programming, or rebuilding an engine. I love machine work, as well as fabrication and problem solving. I love mowing my yard and making it look pretty, landscaping in general(odd, I know). My other true hobby (besides computers) is audio/visual equipment in general, I love building speakers, be it for home or car. I like the whole design process.

I love music, which is probably why I love building speakers. Mainly Rock, a little rap sometimes. My favorite bands are probably Korn, Rob Zombie, Adema, Sum 41, Linkin Park, and Alien Ant Farm. I like going fast in my car, and my friends cars, nothing like the windows down and doing a buck twenty.:headbange I love hanging out with my friends be it chilling in the living room, or working on their cars.

I have one pet, a gray sable colored German Shepherd named Buster that weighs around 100 pounds or so, and he hates meter readers;)

That is about it, there really isn't much more to be said about me.

Hi, my name's Dean Holland. I'm 17, and live in the small university town of Loughborough, in Leicestershire, England.
I have got the follwoing gcse's, i decided to go for a-levels, but they didn't work out:
GNVQ (General National Vocational Qualification) - ICT - C
Media Studies - B
Science - C
Humanities - C
English Language - D
English Literature - D

and ill update this list, once i remember the rest...
-------------------------------------------------------
At the moment, i am currently unemployed, and deciding whether to go back to college, and maybe onto university, or whether to stay at my current level of education, and find a permenant job.

My Father died 6 years ago of Lukemia, so folding means alot to me. I try and do as much as i possibly can, and being a member of team 93 is a privilege for me :) I would really like to hold a fund raiser for cancer research, but sadly don't really know how to go about it. thats something i can research...

I have only joined this forum today, hence the lack of posts, but i'll be visiting here regularly, and as soon as i read about the folding project, i just had to do it.

i have only just joined the 93 team, and still need to get my signature set up, and once i do, i shall try to influence my friend to join the folding revolution :)

My hobbies are trowling forums, especially this one now, as well as reading books, and talking to people on IM programs, and being with my girlfriend and my friends. I own a dog, he's called TJ, and he is wild! My biggest hobby is probably listening to music, and trying to sing along with the songs. yes, it is embarrasing, but i'll happily admit that i do it sometimes. My favourite bands are: Korn, Him, and afi. i also listen to some oldies, such as panera, def leppard, sepultura, etc, but idont limit myself to one genre of music.

I own my own forum, all exclusively about Nintendo, and their games and consoles. I'm nott oo sure if i'm allowed to put the web address here, but here goes: Nintendo Nation (http://www.nintynation.proboards79.com/)

i follow no religious path, and i know very little about computing, except maybe photoshop, and some software!! But never the less, i hope to be a member of this forum, and to be folding, for as long as i possibly can. :)

Name: Dave
Age: 18
Location: Either in Lancaster or in Philadelphia (PA)
Occupation: Was an assistant network admin until I quit so I could go to college. Now looking at Circuit City and other places for work.

I started getting into computers about two years ago when I took a few cisco classes at school. I remember the first day I walked into class and the teacher was talking about these things called routers. I ask my friend "what's a router" and then everybody in the entire class (a class of computer literates) all gave me blank stares, and then burst out laughing. I can now say that I know more about computers then probably 80% of the people in that class :buck: I'm mostly into hardware and networking. About the only programing I like is dreamweaver and flash :-/ I found short-media when searching for info on Fedora 5, and I instantly got hooked. I was very impressed with Drasnor's smart-ness, and I quickly learned that there are many people here with that same smart-ness o.O . I'm not big on games, and that's probably why I have such a crappy system..but I <3 my crappy system. I've yet to join the folding thing, mostly because I have no idea what it is.

Other stuff..I've written a 700+ page fantasy book that's pretty sweet, but nobody has read it yet :-x . I am attending DeVry University, majoring in network communications management. I love to read books even though I rarely read at all (don't really have time/can't really afford much right now). I speak German fairly well, but I'm nowhere close to fluent. I used to love talking to people about religeon and politics, but I've found that those discusions cause nothing but hard feelings for some reason..so now I keep everything private. I like pretty much every kind of music except for stuff that causes me pain in the brain area..haha. Brad Paisley is probably my favorite artist (if anybody knows who that is).

Overall I get along pretty easily with everybody, and I plan on sticking with short media for a long time so hopefully we'll all get along.

Hello everyone! How's it going? I'm Paolo, I'm 20 and I live in the Bay Area in California. I work in retail (right now) at a Sunglass Hut, and I am a nursing student about to transfer into SJSU. Depsite having a job in retail (fashion at that!) and being a future healthcare giver I love computers and gaming. I run a little blog on the side and I love to travel.

I found short-media by following some random links about folding @ home. I joined team #93 and started folding about 2 days ago, then all of a sudden my computer just had a meltdown. Complete PSU failure. Funny eh? Luckily my gracious girlfriend had to build a new computer, so I am borrowing hers at the moment. Did I mention that her computer (the one I'm using is much more kick*** than mine right now?).

My old dinosaur, is a p4 2.4 northwood, with 1 gig of corsair value ram on an old Soyo Dragon Lite mobo. I have a GeForce 4 Ti 128 meg. Enclosed inside some generic ugly beige case w/ no name psu. See how old and poopy it is? But I did build that while in high school so it is alright i guess.

On the other hand, the rental computer I am using is a Asus A8n5x w/ AMD 3800+ x2, 1 gig corsair value, and a ATI radeon x850xt. But it isn't mine and I will have to return it to her, or else she will kill me for not letting her play oblivion (lol i'm playing it before she can).

Anyways, I think team #93 is great so far. Nice to meet everyone!!

Welcome to the team Paolo! Sorry to hear about your computer. How soon will you have it up and running again? I have the same CPU I think, a P4 2.4c but it's overclocked to 3.12 Ghz. I've had this system almost 3 years and have been very happy with it.

Hey everybody!! I'm Mike, 18yrs old, and going to start at Penn State in a few weeks. My current residency is Flanders, NJ. I found short-media a week or so ago while shopping for a laptop. I found Sledgehammer's review for the HP dv8000t, and I was convinced on getting that laptop. I did, and now I visit this site on a regular basis.
I love music, especially techno/dance/trance/gangsta/drum n' bass. I enjoy making my own music as well with programs like Fruity Loops and other DJ software. I also play the trumpet in jazz bands :cool2:. I'm also an avid gamer, but I mostly play DDR (really good for excersizing) :tongue2:. Ive got a sweet car (1998 Integra) and I'm working on pimpin' it (body kit, AEM cold air intake, lowering springs, etc). Already got a nice Pioneer head unit with 4 Polk 6.5 inch speakers and two 10 inch Pioneer IMPP subs :buck:. I also enjoy cooking, mostly Italian. In the winter I love to skiblade; its like skiing but with shorter skiis so u dont use poles and you push off as if you were roller blading. I also love fireworks, even though theyre illegal in NJ , which I think is totally :bs:
Thanks to all that have helped me out, now and in the future. Once I get settled in at college I'm gonna
