Hello!

I'm Jon's (Dragon V8) little sister, Annette and I too, come from the Perth area..

I'm soon to be *mumble mumble* as it's my birthday in about ten days (sheesh I just realised!!).

I am a mum of three sons, one's 24 yrs old, another 5 yrs old and my youngest 4 yrs old. I love 'em to bits and basically I'm a stay at home mum who dabbles in Avon and loves her computer, albeit an old clunker.

Last time I visited Jon and Sally, which was on Christmas day last year, they told me about folding and I nearly fainted when I saw the arsenal of folding computers in his house. (Preeetty blue lights) :hair:

Right now I'm on my spare computer (the other one's giving me an error message so I'll have to take it to the techie once I get the spandoolies) and this spare computer is rather slooooooooooooooooooow. I plan to start folding soon enough, once I'm sure that I won't be frozen out of the computer world. See, I've got 256 Ram and the processor is um... 800MHz. The other one is pretty much the same but it's faster -slightly.

Stop laughing. :grumble:

I mean it.. stop laughing. ;D

So it's slow... I plan on saving a little money and asking Jon to build me a you beaut- mega - knock - yer - socks off machine if he ever gets the time!

I'm allegedly getting a laptop for Xmas from someone but well... we'll see.

I thought that this would be a good way to catch up with my bro on a regular basis as well as helping the world out with some folding. I am aware that Jon and Sally are the duck's nuts in folding, so basically I'll be the one at the other end of the spectrum hahah.. that way it will all balance out.

I know I can't do much.. but hey, a drop in the ocean's better than nothing!

So once again, hello :D

Welcome to Short-Media, Annette. I can tell you'll fit right in here.

And any contribution to the Folding team is welcome, no matter how slow the computer may seem... every little bit helps.

What exactly does "duck's nuts" mean? ;)

..ok be patient with me...

I've got the proggie folding in the background and I've put 93 in the team number so that means this team right?

It was team 0 before but I realised that everyone here has #93 somewhere in their sigs or avvies ... so I put 93 in mine.

What's the fraction that appears when you sit your pointer on the little wheel in the system tray? Mine says F@H: working (99/500)..will I have accomplished something when it hits 500? It's been on 99 all morning ..

Yesterday I left my puter for a few hours and when I came back I could hardly move my pointer... I looked in task manager and it stated that F@H was using 98% of my cpu! ... I rebooted and it wouldn't load the programme properly so I rebooted again and no probs.

Is it because I've got a slow clunker? Did F@H think "oh she's going out so we can hog the cpu while she isn't doing anything"..? :smokin:

...What's the fraction that appears when you sit your pointer on the little wheel in the system tray? Mine says F@H: working (99/500)..will I have accomplished something when it hits 500? It's been on 99 all morning...
Work Units (WU's) are divided into frames. The number of frames varies from WU to WU. In this case, once you finish the 500th frame you will have completed the WU, at which point the finished work will be returned to Stanford U. and you will be awarded the points that it is worth. Then a new one will be automatically downloaded and you'll begin the process all over again. If you look in the Folding signature many of have you might see the number of WU's listed along with the total number of points we have accumulated.

Yesterday I left my puter for a few hours and when I came back I could hardly move my pointer... I looked in task manager and it stated that F@H was using 98% of my cpu! ... I rebooted and it wouldn't load the programme properly so I rebooted again and no probs.

Folding uses whatever resources are not in use by other programs at the time, so yes, it did decide to hog the whole CPU. :vimp:

It will also automatically back off as you do other things with the computer. Tasks like surfing the Internet and reading email actually require very little in the way of processing power, so 98% is not an unreasonable mark. If you have a more CPU-intensive program open it will be much lower. While playing a demanding game or doing something like video rendering (both highly CPU-intensive tasks), FAH will drop off to practically nothing. Once you close the programs it ramps back up into high gear. :)

AussieAnnette

ok thanks for that.

I've booted up the puter today and the mouse was frozen on the screen... dang.. had to reboot a bootup.

profdlp
3 Oct 2006, 03:48am
What does your CPU temperature look like? Running at near 100% it is going to get kind of toasty, which could explain the freezing. (Sounds odd when put that way, doesn't it?)

If you haven't cleaned the CPU fan and heatsink in a while that would be a good place to start. :)

AussieAnnette
5 Oct 2006, 03:21am
lol freezing due to the comp hotting up...

I wouldn't even know HOW to clean the fan and heatsink.

Jon came over the other day and looked at my other not working comp...

It's given me the inspiration to finally get it fixed! (seeing as it has a legit xp on it and it hasn't been updated in three weeks)

5 Oct 2006, 04:26am
just turn the machine off, take the heatsink off. usually can be done with your fingers or sometimes you need a flathead screwdriver. use some rubbing alcohol or i like mineral spirits myself to clear off any old thermal compound or grease. then i would just take the fan off and run the heatsink under the water in the sink. get a can of co2 or just wipe the fins off on the fan. let it dry off, put some new thermal grease on the cpu and put the heatsink back on. not too hard. usually something good to do once a month or so, maybe more often if you have pets. just google cleaning heatsink and youll get some more involved guides to cleaning out your computer with pics and stuff. good luck

if you're not familiar with computer repair, try buying a can of compressed air, taking the outside panels off and blowing it out in the garage!

This doesnt really fall under the computer repair categorie. This is more of a basic pc maintenance issue that should be done regularly to avoid other problems. Sadly some people are a little scared of the confuser and dont clean their computer regularly and pay out the back side to replace parts that fail due to overheating.

the_technocrat
5 Oct 2006, 05:33am
I'd definitely say that properly removing thermal paste and re-applying arctic silver 5 or something (properly) is something that is beyond basic maintenance.

Aussie, if you're not familiar with machine repair, please don't do this. a simple can of air is all you need to clean the inside of the machine. If the fan on the processor's heatsink isn't turning or makes noise, it's a cheap replacement, go for it.

If you honestly don't need the machine, you can have your friend show you how to apply new thermal paste, but it would be an educational exercise only, it is not neccessary as part of regular maintenance. I've personally managed over a thousand machines over the last three years, and have never once needed to mess with the thermal paste to solve an overheating issue.

][v][AGIC
5 Oct 2006, 05:36am
If you take the heat sink off youll need to put thermal paste on, and ive worked on a few pcs where a off set heat sink or badly applied thermal paste was causing an overheating issue.

and excuse me, i just realized this debate is going on in the wrong thread.

the_technocrat
5 Oct 2006, 05:47am
Annette, it's dust. You don't need to remove any components, just blow the fins out with a can of compressed air so air can get through where the dust clogs used to be.

Welcome, and hope to see you up soon!

Hi. My name is Charles. I'd like to start off by saying that I've been a big fan of projects such as this one. I can't recall a date, but I use to participate in the Seti@home project with a few friends, and we rounded up quite a group to sink quite a bit of time into that.

I recently just floated across this place, while i was checking out a way to remove a piece of spyware my computer had gotten over the weeks. Well anyhow, here I am here.. I plan to do my part. I've got the system all set up for running as a service and it's on its way.

A little about myself. I'm 26 years old. I live in Clinton, IA.. I might as well just say IOWA, because no one is going to know the town. Anyhow. I've been into computers since I was about 16, and the past 10 years I've done absolutely nothing. I believe if I've always been on a dedicated connection, why not make some use for it. And you've given me that answer.

If anyone wants to know more about me, then just ask. I may post more as I think about it, but I like to keep things simple.

Hey guys,

I just started folding. I have been a member for awhile and have received a lot of good advice and help, so thanks.

I am a loan officer for Zions Bank in Utah. I am working toward becoming a physician's assistant.

About one year ago I bought a computer for my wife and I to do digital photography work. I started having problems and had troubles getting help with it. I decided that I would figure it out myself. After a few months I decided that I would build one myself. Now I have so much fun keeping up with tech and continue to build computers for friends and family. Saved a friend $2000 on a computer that he was going to buy from Alienware.

Anyhow, nice to meet you!

Name: Jordan Rivest
Age: 24
Occupation: Supv in a call center for a small cellular company (going on 4.5 yrs). Which handles calls for two other companys (which compeate against each other - go figure). One of the companys I do work for is a Wimax ISP. Fairly intresting.
Location: Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada - aka the frozen north & in the middle of butt**** nowhere

Interests: Hockey, Hockey, and more hockey. I can't play it (knee injury), but I'm a great arm-chair GM (arn't we all?), and love to watch it. My favorite player is Sidney Crosby, and I watch many of their games. I guess I could say I'm a hockey nut. Along with that, I enjoy spending time gaming. When I had internet at home it was CS. Now it's one of several games (GTA San Andreas, NFS Carbon, EMH2007). I also like playing around with computers (read breaking them). My spending habits on computers usually goes in spurts. The system in my sig, just happens to be my latest one (in 2 yrs). But seeing how I've already found things I want to change, it probably won't be my last.

General info: I grew up in Prince George BC, and moved up to Whitehorse after I graded in 2000 (seems like a long time ago - wow). Other than occasionally camping (maybe a couple times a yr), and some biking, I hate the outdoors. I'm not into hiking, hunting or any of the outdoor winter sports. The summers suck, and are cold, and short. And it never gets dark (I **** you not). The winters are long (very very long), and ****ing cold. Last week, I woke up to -37C (car would barly start). Joy. And it's usually dark all day long (I haven't worn sunglass's in several months). And even with the money aside (which is pretty good - makes up for everything being overpriced), I just love it up here, and don't really see myself some where else.

College is dirt cheep up here (thank you federal gov't), I spent around $3,500 in 2 yrs, including books & supplies. During those two years I was taking computer studies. Unfortunatly due to my living situtation, I wasn't able to finish the program. So instead I went back to work full time with NMI Mobility (a subsidary of Bell Mobility), and bought a little trailer/mobile home about 5 minutes from work. The place will be paid for in 5yrs, and then I'll almost definately be going back to school. I have no clue what I want to do (probably won't be the computer studies program).

However with the current job paying all the bills, and leaving enought to waste on new electronic toys (doesn't everyone need a 42" plasma?), and other much needed items (new computer & LCD Monitor). I don't feel any need to run back anytime soon.

Back in Prince George, I have 2 younger brothers, who are 16 & 12, and they live with my mom & step-father. Here in Whitehorse, I have a 14.5yr old sister (going on 25) who I spoil a lot and am very close to, and a 13 yr old brother, who everyone thinks of as a little ****er. But we get along ok. And I'm teaching him what little I know about computers, and how to put them together.

I started folding for Team 93 (tonight). I'm gonna keep my work desktop folding 24/7 (work pays for that power bill). But I'm leary of leaving my home system on like that... now that I get to pay my own power bill  (would I see much of an increass using the system below - has a 600 watt P/S?).

I found this site while looking for answers about my RAID issue in the new system. But everyone was so friendly that I had to stay. So here I am. Oh yeah, did I mention that I'm into hockey?

Hiya,
urd here

I kinda started lurking around here after i've googled for M2N32 SLI Deluxe's issues and the big ass thread here was quite helpful :D . I sort of knew about what Folding@Home was all about but never cared to research more. After i've seen all those Sigs, i kinda started thinking what's this all about. I stumbled upon this section and then downloaded the utility and voilah..

I just have one question... Usually I prefer having as low temps as possible but after starting the folding thing at load my temps are as high as 47 or so.. and at idle somewhere around 45.. I've never planned to run a constant load utility aside some BT clients. Only one or two days stress testing was the max i've ever done. So was wondering if there is anything i should be worrying about?

That's about it.

Urd! Thanks for joining the team :)

As you know, I also have the M2N32-SLI Deluxe ;) Running constantly at 47-49 is not a concern for me. I have always, from the moment I build a machine, run both cores at 100%. With adequate cooling, there are no issues. If your temps are 47, that indicates adequate cooling for full load :)

It all started a few years ago with an Apple][+, C64, 1040ST... I digress :o

Computer Technician in my 9to5, electronics as a hobby (Not as much as i'd like though... way too much 9to5 gets in the way :) )

Been lurking here for a little while and found a lot of great answers and very interesting reading. My folding box which had a previous score of 161857 for another team is now under the control of Team 93

For some reason my SIG wont work... (Cut and Pasted from the Generator) :(

Hiya to all you out there in folding land!

Where to start? If you know your U.S. state abbreviations, you're one step ahead. I spend most of my life as a student at the University of Iowa, majoring in biology with a focus on genetics. Outside of that, I tend to do a lot of online gaming in my spare time. Also big on the reading part, whether it's nonfiction or fiction.

I'm also involved in my university's American Sign Language club (ASL being my foreign language requirement of choice) and the local American Indian Student Association (I took several courses under one of our native studies department heads).

I'm hoping to put in my two bits of folding, no matter how small they may be.

greetings team 93, from Columbia MO.
I didn't realize until a couple of days ago that I'd been acknowledged here for my little contribution to the cause. Much Thanks. Since i'd gotten good advice here on getting and keeping my over heated machines running, and also because Alzheimer's runs in my family, I took the plunge back in October and set up the cool protein screen saver on my workstation. it's been folding away since then. So when I came across a stats page with my name on it a few days ago i did a double take, then decided to set up on my gamer as well. I am a 41 year old college student at Columbia College, trying to major in math.
The two machines i have folding now are a dual xeon (2.4) on supermicro p4dce+ with 1g rambus, an old workhorse that still serves me well, and a 3.4g prescott @(3.74) on an asus p4p800-e. any advice on improving their output would be appreciated.

Hello ShortMedia / Team 93 people.

I've joined the folding@home effort yesterday (feb 28th. 2007). This board being the reason of my joining (Gen. Keeble and Trogan can fight over the "recruting rights" :p )
I stumbled on the website after googling for help or solutions about a nasty little trojan issue.

The name's Eric Michaud (pronounced mee-sho for you english people  ) and live in Montreal, Canada. I'm a 30+ HR/manager getting himself prepared (mentally and financially) to an interesting return as a University student in what I think could be translated as "Organizational Applied computing". Basically it's the first part of many courses (and years) that should help in analyzing and integrating computer technologies in an organization/company based on its needs and requirements.

In my spare times; play on the computer (RTS, FPS, MMOs), hang out with friends or simply try to have a good time and laughs. I dabble in almost every sports and activities. Always keeping a mind open for new experiences.

Hello my name is Patrick, I'm 26 years old, and I am new to the site and community. I came here yesterday in need of help with spyware and virus problems I am having. That is when I found out about the folding team. I just started folding today. This is a great community and it is for an equally great cause. I will be a part of both for years to come. I am currently in the U.S. Army and I have been for 8 years. I was last stationed in Germany but then I left active duty to go into the reserves. I went to school and made a career change working for Mercedes-Benz of Chicago. 2 years ago I was called back to active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I live in Chicago, where I am originally from and grew up, and I am stationed just north of the city at Ft. Sheridan. Eventually I would love to get a job in the computer industry dealing with networking and security. For myself I would love to learn how to detect and correct problems dealing with spyware and viruses. I see almost all of you have quite an extensive education in these areas and I hope that sometime you could possibly teach me what you know. In my free time I like to game (mainly 1st person shooters and strategy) and make music on the PC. A few weeks ago I started to brew my own beer  My fiends have been doing it for some time and I think it is a great hobby. I am very glad I found this community because you seem like a great group of people. I hope to get to know all of you in the days, weeks, months, and years to come.

G'day all. I'm IndigoRed aka Frank McCauley. I live in Kilmore, Victoria, Australia. Kilmore is a community about 45km North of Melbourne. Originally though, I'm from Tempe, Arizona. Moved to Aus around 20 years ago.
10 years U.S. Navy ('74-'84) as a Sonar Technician.
2 years in the U.S. Post Office (so don't cross me!) :p
10 years with South Pacific Tyres (Goodyear/Dunlop) as a QA Technician/Area Manager.
I've played with pc's (Atari 130xe was my 1st...) for over 25 years. No formal qualifications though (except what you pick up playing with them that long, which is more than most school leavers).
Don't mind a bit of gaming. My nick comes from gaming. If indigo blue is a dark blue, and a good splattering of blood and gore is a dark red...:cool2: Anyway, Red Faction has been my game of choice, and in fact, I was a part of a clan for a while. Not bad for a guy in his mid 40's! Dabbling with UT2k4 now.
So about F2H... I've seen it around for some time, and I've seen it here for a while (SMF Actually) but I never took it up til now. I had been doing seti@home for quite some time, but after a reformat, didn't rejoin. I had lost my password there anyway so didn't even know how I was going... And here I am, all loaded up and folding... for Team 93 of course.
I have a couple of questions, but only one here. Are we still Team Short Media, or Team Icrontic?

Cheers all,

dragonV8

Hey, all, I've been a member of this site for about a year, but don't post much, and just decided to get two instances of F@H running. I'm a U.S. Marine in South Carolina and my interests are very broad, from cooking to working on cars, with tinkering with electonics in there, too. I read a lot, and am preparing to go back to college to get a M.D.

Well, I suppose it's time I popped my head in here. First two names are Matthew Mason, you can call me either.

I'm a 24 year old bit-head and have been building, tweaking, and torturing computers for as long as I can remember, but just started folding in February of this year.

I am half of a two man operation in the Dallas area that acts as CTO for small and medium sized businesses, and spend my free time either with my wife and 1 year old son or gaming like there is no tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who makes this team and community possible.

I'm upgrading my system drastically soon, including a Core 2 Duo processor, which should help :D

Thought I would rewrite my entry, as a fair bit has changed.

My name is Rob, I'm 18, and I've been a member of Icrontic/Short-Media for just about three years. I signed up in december of 2001 to post a smidge of help for someone who was having trouble with their video card: They had a Visiontek geforce card, and apparently a ton of them had been released without the plastic adhesive strip removed from the bottom of the GPU HSF. I suggested he check that.

Welcome! I think you'll find that we're a good group of people here! Good call on the video card!

Hello everyone, I thought I'd introduce myself-

I am Jackie, and I'm the Gnome Queen :D Prime invited me to join the TF2 ICrontic group, and I decided to just go ahead and invite myself to join the whole thing. :P

I am 21, and an English Education major working towards getting my secondary ed degree in English. I am a major Evercrack 2 fiend, and I love TF2. I'm also a big Shakespeare Geek (on top of being a bookworm and videogames nerd) and I'm currently acting in my theater company on campus's production of Alls Well that Ends Well. I have been folding since...uhh...yesterday, (that is, if I set everything up right, I think I'm going to have my friend look it over later). I really should have been folding longer, since I did hear about the program before, and I know that it is doing great things. My boyfriend has it on his PS3, and he showed me the other day that he was working on the folding for a protein of Rett Syndrome, a developmental disorder that my sister has. For that reason alone, I really should already have been folding, but I think I must have seen something shiny when originally told about it. Shiny things are quite distracting.

In case any of you also play EQ2, my main character there is Eilith, on the Antonia Bayle server. Annnd thaaat's me- thank you for letting me join you guys, you all seem like a great group. :D

I'm David Roberts, I just had my 51st birthday. I've been folding since way back when, probably around 2001, but I joined team 93 a few years ago. I had the programs running as services on my computers, for a long time, but about a year ago, my son shut them all off (he thought they interfered with his gaming). But recently, I upgraded two of my computers to AMD Phenom Quad cores, and I couldn't stand that all that power was sitting idle, so I installed the SMP version on them, and two other dual core machines in my house. So we are folding up a storm.

I'm actually not sure how I ended up on team 93. I was rather surprised to discover I was a member. I think I entered "93" by mistake. Maybe I thought they were asking my age!!! (OK, I'm not that old). Anyway, after I found out I was forever tied to Icrontic (if you change your team it resets all your counts), I checked out the web site and it's pretty cool. Anyway, I am a tech junkie all the way, so I guess I fit it.

As for other details, I work as a freelance Japanese to English translator, translating engineering documents for $ 50 million machines made by Nikon that make computer chips. I have a wife and kids, two sons 17 and 13, and a daughter who is 10.

Hey all! Im fairly new to the forums as you can tell by my post count. I'm from www.computerforums.org and im looking for a little different atmosphere and i believe icrontic fits the bill.

Anyway, i'm 16, junior in highschool and as you can see in my sig im a computer technician and system builder for a local computer company. I play sports for school, last year i was on JV baseball at my 6A highschool, and during the summer i play at ken berry (a local baseball complex in topeka).

My background - Born in altus, OK my dad was stationed at Altus AFB, so i'm a military brat. He served in desert storm/gulf war and is now slightly paraplegic due to injuries he suffered in the air force.

Anyway, after growing up in altus at the age of 7, we moved to my current town topeka, ks. And guess what! IT SUCKS! Yea, there's absolutely nothing to do here, NOTHING. Im getting out of here ASAP after college. Which brings my next part, my future.

Right now im planning on attending Kansas State for a BA in Nuclear Engineering and a MA in Computer Systems and Networking, both fields fascinate me, so why not combine them? Also, since i was a kid ive always wanted to be a firefighter and currently im a memeber of the local explorer post for the fire department to get real experience, its not just a dream i've had, its a reality that ive wanted to accomplish. So, after going to K-State i plan on becoming a part-time volunteer fire fighter and emt. That's basically me, except the part about computers, but being a self educated computer technician, the whole computer thing should be obvious :).

I look forward to dedicating 6+ computers to our folding@home team.

Hi!

I figure I should get around to introducing myself, as I've actually been folding for Team 93 for a couple months now. My name is Ben. I am a Biometrics Support Specialist for a hospital group in Cincinnati, OH, which is also where I currently live.

I was brought here by a few longtime friends who frequent Icrontic. You might know them (Ghoosdum, CB, Crazy Joe, Zanthian, sharkydart) :). Anyways, I figured while I was here, I might as well make myself useful and do some folding.

Well, that's it for me. Talk to everyone later!

Maybe I'm slightly too late but I decided to post anyway.

My name is Ian Hooi. I'm chinese, 19 and I live in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

I'm an airline pilot in training with an airline called AirAsia. Due to start line training on the Airbus A320 in a couple of months time. If you ever fly with them give me a shout. I have a CPL, a frozen ATPL (I don't know what it's called over there, Americas FAA has funny names for almost everything) and an Instrument Rating. Got about 200 hours under my belt, I know that might sound shocking to those of you who know about flying but thats just the way things work down here. :)

I play Dawn of War and COD4. The Nazi Zombie map in CODWAW is fast becoming a fad over here, and so is Left4Dead. I play those too. It's been a little dream of mine to play Doom 3 since it came out, and with some help from Icrontic forumers, I got myself up to speed on the hardware market and went out and bought a new PC. So I'm playing Doom 3 now. :P

Currently running the GPU2 and SMP clients on a Q8200 and HD4850 under Vista (After ALOT of help from ALOT of people here) 24/7. Hope to start a big time folding farm soon once my pay scale gets bumped up. :)
