Right, I've got a bit of a problem and I hope someone on here can help me out. Up until yesterday I was running Windows XP using a copy. Everything's been fine but I've always missed the security that a genuine disc offers. A few weeks ago someone I know was cleaning out the tops of the kitchen units (they've recently moved in) when they found a genuine Windows XP sealed in it's sleave with the manual and attached product key. Hard to believe but true!
They gave it to me and yesterday I decided to reformatt my hard drive and put this in. The first thing I did was install some updates for added security. This went fine and it installed 18 updates. Nice one I thought. However when I tried to check for updates again Microsoft told me that this isn't a genuine disc even though the last 5 digits of the product key match those that they show.
I've just got in from work and once again successfully installed some updates. So what do I do now? I don't know whether to purchase Windows XP again or stay with the disc I've currently got.

If it's truly a genuine disc, call Microsoft and have them walk you through authorizing your copy with the proper key.

My only fear is someone else is using the key. How much would a new copy set me back?

Thanks but have you got a British equivalent?

This is from Komplett, but the price will be similar everywhere: http://www.komplett.de/k/ki.asp?sku=327649

I'll need a Briton to pop in and lay down some reputable UK dealers, though.

Seems very reasonable. Thought I'd be looking at about £200.

£64 - that's not bad!

Everywhere else was £100 or more.

Seems too good to be true! It is a good deal and Komplett are a fairly reliable company IMHO, no complaints surfacing at the Micromart UK forum's about them, plenty about some other's though. ARIA are doing similar priced copies with an upgrade to vista offered XP MCE is £67 from memory.

OEM XP Pro was going for about £80 about 18 months ago but not sure on retail pricing. I bought XP Home OEM at launch for about £65.

By the looks of things £55 is the price you will be paying after VAT on an OEM version.
