#2 see #1 but #1 cant see#2

Before we start off with this My name is Morty and my spelling is BAD!!! I do see that there is a spell check but will only help a little but. please forgive my glorious grammar and spelling errors!

I did do a search but got a lot of the same answers and I not sure what to search 4

Now down to the nut an d bolts of my problem. I have 2 computer in my network 1, 4 port linksys router IP range is .100-.150
#1 is called BLUE, #2 is called BOX
I can ping each way, I can use the default shares on BOX to BLUE, But not on BLUE to BOX. BLUE the only thing I see in the network places is the my shares that comes up in the window and On BOX I can see all of the shared files but I get an error message stating I don't have permission to use them. I get the same thing when BLUE travels to others places as well. But I can use the UNC path to gain access to the files I want.
I do get the little hand under the File and I have given access to all sub folders as well.

Things I have done
turned off the Firewall on both
I have run the wizard multiple time on both and given it an time if it need it
Work group name is the same on both
SFS is on both
Put Password on both accounts and changed names of one account (at one time both accounts had the same name but, different computer names)

This is just getting old I have to move the information 2-3 times before it get to it's home.
It's probable something simple like a zone setting or a box to be checked or unchecked. I'm asking for any and all advice I think I'm 2 close to the problem to see the answer.

2 recap my downloads come in on BOX then to transfer them to BLUE I have to transfer them to the default shares folder then go to BLUE pull them down and move them to the proper folder WHAT a PAIN in the NECK.

Sometimes when I can't browse to a NETBIOS share, I map a drive to the IP address. What if you type in the location such as, \\192.168.1.100\ShareName? Or will you still get an access denied error?

Oh, and I also almost committed suicide over one like yours last year. Turned out there was a space at the end of the computer name or at the end of one of the share names, don't remember which...screwed it all up.

there are 2 types of permssions with file sharing. There are security permissions and share permissions. by defualt windows, as well as linux will take the harshest permissions by default. you can add people all day long for security permisions, but if they arent in the share permissions, they cant even see the share.

you can check the permissions on a folder by right clicking on it, and choose properties, if in windows XP Pro, you need to turn on an option to see the security tab ( choose tools, folder options, view, and the very last option is use simple file sharing, turn that off ) there you can see the permissions for the security to the folder, there are a vast number more options there than on the sharing tab, to make the folder pretty much accessible by anyone, as well as copy, anything to it to turn the group EVERYONE, on and allow READ, LIST, EXECUTE, and WRITE, that will allow people to admin the share, once the sharing permissions let them in to the share.

the share persmissons are pretty easy. on the same tab as security you will see a sharing tab, if you add the EVERYONE group into the list and the only permission they need to access and write stuff to is READ, and WRITE. never give the EVERYONE group for full control. full control means they can, read, write, execute, modify, as well as take ownership. that means even if the security permissions are restricted, i can litterally take ownership of the entire directory and to what ever i want with it.


an even easier way to move files around like that is to create an FTP server (filezilla is free! ;)) you create user groups, and then user accounts, then add the accounts to the groups and add groups to have specific rights to any folder, it dosnt even have to be shared! i use both file sharing and FTP in my house, i like FTP because it takes a required account and password, even after your in windows, and the FTP wont tell the rest of the network what is available as shares on the network.


one other tid bit, if you use a $ in the share name, its a hidden share, it wont advertise its self if you browse the network, and to browse to it its like this \\Atlas\E\Music$ that would be a hidden share on my network

It came down to security permissions. I ran that wizard under security and sharing on one and not the other I also think disabling the guest on one and not the other account might of had something to do with it as well. when I could connect to the BOX from Blue it would ask me log in using the guest account?:confused:
But after 3 hours of exhausting all other possibility's settings and re-rerunning the network setup wizard I starting checking permission and those setting and what would you know the box that said share this on the network was grayed out. :grr: Hollybageebers is what I think I said I ran that wizard on the BOX and now everyone is talking.:cheers:

Yes I'll have a :beer: 4 Armo
and I used a lot more colorful words because it was around 10:30 WHEN THIS HAPPENED. The wife didn't see my joy or pain when it happened.
I didn't think it was a permission problem either but when exhaust all realistic possibility's then start exhausting all the unrealistic possibility's

np, just remember, if it ever prompts for a login, or you ger access denied, or permission denied, you have conflicting share/security permissons. :)
