hey,

is there a way of increasing the speed of msn transfers... im sending a doco to a friend and he has adsl 2+ like me and we both have 100kb/sec upload speed and our files send at 4kb/sec... is there a port that needs to be opened on our routers?

Simple. MSN Messenger SUCKS at file transfers; most specifically large ones.

Your right msn does indeed suck, I use gaim and unfortunately I'm forced into using the msn protocol due to all my friends. Surely there is a way of sending files quicker by opening ports?

You could check the MS support site for any needed ports opened for MSN Messenger... or maybe there is some other program out there that would work better.

i too have found messenger to be quite poor for file transfers

its often quicker to upload it to one of the free file hosting sites and send the person the link

Try forwarding TCP port 1863 to see if that helps your speeds, if you really want to send the file via MSN Messenger.

I would take djshowdown advice and just use one of the file hosting sites.

You can try using the sharing folders, I've found it to be a much faster transfer rate than sending files.

Sending files over anything but jabber sucks. Use yousendit.com (http://www.yousendit.com) instead :).
