View Full Version : Can't get connected
I've just installed a Belkin wireless networking card in my computer. I ran the networking wizard and all that stuff. I'm connected to my local area network and am getting excellent signal strength but I can't connect to the internet. Also it's not seeing the other computers on the network and they aren't seeing it. I've done everything and been through everything in Windows thats network related and the Belkin wireless configuration utility. I can't see anything wrong but I must be missing something.
Go to start -> run -> cmd:
Type <b>ipconfig</b> and hit enter. Can you tell me what it says?

I have a Belkin router, and as far as I remember, it used 192.168.2.1 as standard IP, whereas I am using 192.168.1.xxx for my network. Also I have decided to use fixed IP adresses, and not let Belkin act as an DHCP server.

It just flashes up a window that quickly disappears giving no info. Did I mention this is Win98. A computer in another room on a wireless card connects with no problems so I'm totally stumped on this.
My router is a Motorola WR850G. But this card has worked with this router in the past.
Ah, 98.
Go to start -> run and type: <b>WINIPCFG</ib>
IP Config dialog box:
Drop down: SiS NIC SISNIC (there are 2 other options)
Adapter Address: 00-00-61-75-56-DE
IP Autoconfiguration Address: 169.254.61.84
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: Blank
And then there's the buttons at the bottom:
OK, Release, Renew, Release all, Renew all and more info.
Holy crap I finally got it working. Don't ask me which of the million times of trying a hundred different things finally got it working. I'm just glad that it is.
Weedo, you 'da man. Not sure how you did it either, but on Win 98 remember Thrax's winipcfg. And by the way, when you winipcfg and see a 169.254.xx.xx address and no gateway, you are always in the deep weeds. No sense in looking at firewall problems or anything else till you get your network adapter taking an address from your router.
I'll make a note of that. Thanks.
