Hi,
I'm new to this forum, and I have a problem. I recently bought a new sony DVD burner. I install it and to test it I put in a DVD so I can watch a movie, here is my question the video/movie plays I can see it on the screen but I get no audio. I thought it might be the audio cable so I plug one onto my DVD burner and my motherboard (AUX) slot, but a no go. Anybody have any suggestion?
thanks

Hello macross. Welcome to Short Media.
Do you get any sound at all on your computer?
IF NOT.....
Are your speakers connected to the proper audio jack (usually green)?
Are your speakers turned on?
Please, go to
START
CONTROL PANEL
SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES
In the VOLUME tab, is there a check mark in the MUTE box?
If so remove it and click ok then try your audio again.

Yes and thank you for the quick reply, I put in a CD into the DVD burner and that works fine I can listen to music, but when I put a DVD disc in to watch a movie the video works fine but no audio.

Ahhh! Ok. Have you tried a different movie?
If so, and you get the same results....
What program (DVD Player) are you using to play your DVD movies?

If you install dvd player software, it comes with a mpeg2 audio and video codec.
and
Depending on what audio streams come with the DVD and which audio settings you have done in the OS audio prefs and dvd player audio setup, you should hear the audiostream. :)

Ok so more then likely I may have to buy a player software? So PowerDVD is the best one?

It's the one I personally use, there are probably many others. :)
You may also be able to find some free software on the internet.

Not necessarily. Like Kentigern said, you may just be missing an audio codec (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/c/codec.html)
Kentigern, can you step macross through getting the codecs s/he needs?

Thanks Pterocarpous :)
I heard about this site http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ on a cd/dvd geeksite haven't tried it personally however it is free
Includes all necessary codecs etc for different o/s
You could also check back at the store where you bought the drive usually if it's a retail boxed they come with some form of dvd player.
 It has been known for retailers to remove the software and sell it seperately, more income for them. :werr:

I don't think you need it. (Remember, you're able to play music CDs fine.)

I bought this off of pricewatch. So it only came with the DVD drive. I'm going to download this player and see if that work.

As long as the option for enabling digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device is set on the properties tab for the driver under device maanger, then the cd audio cable is unneeded. Most drives support this feature and keep in mind that the built in DAC will be disabled on the CD-ROM.
As far as codec, there are many alternatives, http://www.free-codecs.com . My favorite is K-Lite megacodec pack with real and quicktime alternatives built in. If you choose to use the included media player classic, you can play virtually any video file thrown at the software. When you uninstall, every trace of the codecs and software isntalled are removed. It will also alert you if there are conflicting codecs during installation.

I read your initial post more carefully this time, macross, and noticed you said that you use WMP11 AND GOM.
There may be a conflict between the two players OR you may not have you configuration set up completely. Following is some research I did and some suggestions as a result.
----------------------------------------
GOM Player should play your DVD. As for codecs, according to GOM, their codecs are embedded into the software. (No need for seperate codecs.)
What Is GOM Player:

GOM Player:

GOM Player Forum:

Please, perform the following steps:
START
ALL PROGRAMS
ACCESSORIES
SYSTEM TOOLS
SET PROGRAM ACCESS & DEFAULTS
Choose CUSTOM
Change your DEFAULT MEDIA PLAYER to GOM
----------------------------------------
Please, perform the following steps:
Open MY COMPUTER
Right-click on your DVD player
Select the AUTOPLAY tab
Click the drop-down arrow & click on DVD MOVIE
Under ACTIONS, place a dot in the SELECT AN ACTION TO PERFORM
Go through the list and find GOM PLAYER
Click on GOM PLAYER
Click on APPLY
Click on OK

If you've already found success following zero.counter's suggestions in post #19, I'd let sleeping dogs lie and enjoy your working DVD player. :smiles:
Thankyou for posting back here and letting us know how you resolved the issue (post #20). That will help others who read the thread later on researching their own DVD audio issues.
Enjoy!

Tried the custom:
START
ALL PROGRAMS
ACCESSORIES
SYSTEM TOOLS
SET PROGRAM ACCESS & DEFAULTS
Choose CUSTOM
Change your DEFAULT MEDIA PLAYER to GOM
That didn't worked, I'm happy with the VLC player, for right now.
My start up was different from your steps, mine look like this:
"START" THAT PULLED UP THE PANEL THAN I LOOKED ON THE RIGHT SIDE
WHERE IT SAYS "CONTROL PANELS" THERE IS "SET PROGRAM ACCESS & DEFAULTS" UNDER THAT WAS "PRINTERS & FAX".
Again thanks for all the help, I'll be back with anymore problems if I run into them.
