View Full Version : Black and White Game on Windows XP?

So, I built the new box...Atlhon XP 2500+ (Barton), 256 Mb RAM, DFI AD77 mobo...a nice step up from the old home unit. On to that, I installed a brand new and legal OEM copy of Windows XP.
My 12 yr old son has been waiting impatiently for days for me to get this done. He had recently bought the EA game Black and White, which would not play on the old computer (video card not up to snuff.)
So I installed it for him, we launched it, the start-up screen appears...and then "poof", it disappears.
So I do some research, and find some pointers on EA Games site:..end all user processes except explorer and taskmger, clear the temp directory, uninstall and re-install, etc. No change.
So, is anyone using Black and White (orginal version not "recommended" for XP) on XP? If so, is there a patch for XP (we ran the game patch that is on the install disk to fix some game issues, not a specific OS patch.
Any good advice would make my son's weekend much brighter :)
Cheers,
Dexter...

All I can say is that it works fine on my XP machines...
Have you d/led all the patches from EA? Try that, and try updating your video drivers to the latest ones (or the 3.7s if it's an ATi card)

You could try running it in compatability mode...

Actually, we found the answer on Gamefaqs.com, and you guys were on the right track. Needed the v1.2 patch, and it has to be set to Win98 compatibility. My video drivers are okay, new card (though I will search for an update soon (when my boy gets tired of being a white god... )
Thanks guys,

Yeah I used to love Black and White. I had it running on windows 2000.
A few issues, most resolved after first patch.
I sent in detailed error reports as requested.
The Black and White support page said "win2000 issues being worked on check back soon"
It stayed like that for almost 2 years.
WinXP had same problems. Lionhead studios claimed to be working on a fix I continued to send in detailed accounts of errors.
Certain points in the game were unplayable.
Then suddenly the second long awaited patch long promised by lionhead studios (even before the release of the first patch) was scrapped. EA stop trying to fix the problems, and expect everyone to upgrade to black and white 2.
Well sod them. I haven't played the game since, even thought it was my favorite game of all time.
This was not my first run in with poor customer support from EA, and it won't be my last, but I am very weary about buying EA games now, and I certainly don't unless I can avoid it.
I am certainly not buying Black and White 2.
Shame. EA is naff - unfortunalty they own most of the good games now.

I'll be buying Black & White 2, when it comes out. Say what you will about EA (I didn't appreciate the incompatibility with ATi cards in NFSHP2...) but their games are the best around. Black & White STILL has the best AI of any game I've ever used, bar none.

Well, I can understand the point of no longer putting comany resources into patching old software, and just telling user that they have to buy new software. When you buy a game that is designed for ceratin OS platforms, if you make a conscious decision to move away from that platform, that does not make EA or any other software producer automatically responsible to provide you with a patch to enable that. There is no express guarantee in the software that it will last you a lifetime through any OS you upgarde to. Obviously, if enough demand exists to create patches, companies are going to do it. But if they are working on a newer version which will work on the newer OS, it does not make sound business sense to invest a lot of man-hours into upgrading the old version. Owners of the old software either have to stick with the OS that works, or suck it up and buy the new version.
As for our install, it is working great, with only one hitch. I had set up XP home so that my son had "limited" rights, just for an added measure of protection. But B&W (and I suspect many other games that require the CD in the tray to play) would not work for him on limited rights. So I upped him to admin rights, with a stern warning to always virus scan any downloads and not install any software without talking to his mom or I first. Consequences will be losing admin rights, which translates to losing rights to play these types of games. He's a smart kid, he'll be careful :)
Cheers all,

I have the same thing with my accounts and kids. If I install a game I go to - http://www.megagames.com/cracks/gm6.htm
and download a noCD fix. This lets me play the games without putting the CD in.
This is not a warez site, it just has noCD fixs and patches.

Well I've got a slightly different problem ... I found all your advise helpful but my problem is still there. When I load up the game it does so happily until the animated Lionhead logo appears. Then the animation goes dodgy and lots of random lines appear. In the gane itself rocks and other things will disapear and reapear and parts of the screen flood with a single colour which then flashes so in a nutshell the GFX are fooked. Here's a screenshot I took of the first five mins of the game when you follow the three people back to the village and all the peeps are dancing and whatnot http://www.villagephotos.com/viewpubimage.asp?id_=7668742.
I looked on tonnes of forums, help sites, trouble shooters and even sent an E-mail to EA and they all say the same thing, log on as admin, shut down all none crucial processes, make sure your drivers are up to date etc etc. Nothing works :( ... not even the 1.1 or 1.2 patch.
If it's any help to you my specs are:
2600+ Athlon XP
GF FX 5600 Ultra (Gainward)
SoundBlaster PCI 128
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
512 Mb Corsair DDR
DirectX 9
Thanks :)

Well, this is probably not going to solve your problem, but you can take the SB 128 out, as it sucks. The onboard audio is far, far better.
I don't know what to tell you about the game, though. You could try replacing the GeForce FX with something decent, and that may fix it, but there may be other, more cost-effective ways of fixing it that I'm not aware of.

Lol, tbh the soundcard is getting on a bit now, and I aint rich so the FX is a nice card for what I can afford :P lol.

I'm not sure. You can go to a site called gamefaqs.com, see if anyone has already asked that question. If not, you can ask it yourself.

To feed mouse to an old game, you need a slowed down mouse or a old mouse. XP is so dang good at feeding mouse-clicks that old games get overwhelmed. Take the mouse accelleration and zero it, plug in an older PS\2 mouse and use it for the game. Then the mouse will be slow enough that it will not be so far ahead of the game that the game gives up while trying to parse mouse click events and track a hyperfast moving mouse. That dll is a pointer and mouse click handler. Try running the game with Windows 95 compliance, for starters. A real old game may need an old mouse driver installed for it to work, and a floppy boot.

If it is XP, did you try the compatibility modes is mentioned earlier in this thread? Win98 compatibility worked for us.

This still puzzles the hell out of me. I've run it on like 5 different XP machines. Drop it in, install, and it works. Never had any issues at all. Has anyone had this issue with ATi cards? That's the only thing I can think of... every computer I've ever run it on has had ATi video, and it has always run fine. It even ran on my P3-600 SpeedStep/256MB/8MB Rage Mobility laptop, albiet at like 1fps @ minimum detail, since the Rage Mobility has no OpenGL or D3D support under XP...

Ive been trying to play BW and Ive had every problem Imagineable! I have finaly sorted them all out exept 2 interlinked ones:
1. BW doesnt like GeForce cards especialy FX5200 (guess which card I have!) I have finaly found out how to sort out the dodgy streaky graphics caused by this by putting compatability mode into 256 colours and it works perfectly...........Until:
2. (The same problem as da6thSense by the sound of it) when the game loads up it leaves the windows mouse pointer in BW!? so when I click it sends me straight back to windows. So then I click on B&W in the tool bar, it re-launches without the windows pointer and NOT in 256 colours!
All I can say is HHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!! before I go mad!

Ok, i've had a long list of problems with this game. I bought the double pack at Wal-Mart with B&W and Creature Isle. I went to install, and it did so, then i tried to run it. I got the crash to desktop thing. so i patched it with 1.3. Did not work. Re-installed. Patched with 1.2. Worked with my mouse still connected to the desktop. So , i downloaded new video card drivers. Still no help. I opened the game, then clicked my mouse, then restored the window and it worked. Then i noticed terrible graphics glitches. The graphics were fine until i did the trick to get rid of the mouse pointer. Everytime it came back i had problems. I messed with every compatability option possible and no help. Finally, i found that you were supposed to uninstall Hotfix-KB824141. I did this, and the game worked sort of. It runs, but it still has graphics glitches and now it lags like crazy. I'm beginning to get very angry with this game  , as i've done every possible thing i can think of to fix it, and it just slaps me in the face with a new problem every time. Can anyone help me??? has anyone else had this much trouble? Any suggestions? Here are the specs on my computer:
Processor: 1.0Ghz Intel Celeron
Gfx Card: GeForce MX 420 64MB
Memory: 512 SD
OS: Windows XP Professional version 2002 Service Pack 1
CD-ROM Drive: HP cd-writer
I do not see any reason for the poor performance unless it is just my video compatability with the game. I would not be surprised to find out that i have the one card the game will absolutely not work on....Please help me.

Is that Geforce card AGP or PCI?
What driver are you running for it?
And have you checked your BIOS video settings to ensure your BIOS specs match your video cards requirements? IE, 64MB hole for a 64 MB card, proper AGP x settings if it is an AGP card, etc?

It is a PCI card. I just updated my driver yesterday to 56.72. I dont know about the BIOS stuff. I remember having a lot of trouble overriding my onboard card when i installed the new card. I don't remember checking the compatability of my slot to the card though. How exactly would i go about doing this?

OK....a 64 MB PCI card is pretty low end for the graphics intensive gaming you are getting into with games like B&W.
Read this:
http://www.sysopt.com/agp.html
PCI bandwidth peaks at 133 MB/sec in 32 bit mode. That is only under extremely optimal conditions, because the PCI bus is a shared bus, meaning your other peripherals - ethernet card, modem, sound, and whatever sle you have installed on it - all share that bus. If you even get 100 MB/sec you should be lucky.
AGP is a direct pipeline from the video processor to the RAM/CPU, etc. AGP in 1x mode can peak at 533 MB/sec. 2x, 4x, and 8x AGP up that number accordingly.
In other words, for smooth gaming quailty, you want / need an AGP card. If you have an AGP slot on your motherboard, you should switch to an AGP card. You will be much happier :)
Failing that, you could try moving to a PCI card with more RAM, but this doesn't help much with the speed of rendering graphics. As an example, my system has a 64MB AGP card running in 4X mode. My friend's son has a 128 MB PCI card. They both play Halo. When my son plays it, with graphics settings on full for most options, the video is smooth and superb. On my friend's son's computer, we had to set all the video options to the lowest settings or the game would crash constantly. My son's has never crashed. So, the RAM does not play nearly as much a factor as the speed, and for speed, you need AGP.

Hello all
im new to the forums so sorry if i am a bit of a pain at times but i have a problem with black and white that is apparently caused by windows xp.
ok when i play the game it works all fine. not a ingle problem atall... there i am minding my own business throwing villagers around my island to my hearts content, and then all of a sudden the whole game just freeses. no error message the whole thing just locks up. asiff time has stoped, the music cuts out etc.
I was experimenting with this, trying to find a trend, but there wasnt one. it froze randomly (usually bout 4 mins into game). so i tried stopping all non active..thingies on the desktop e.g ctrl+alt+del and then ending most all the procceses etc. but all to no avail. i tried running it in all the compatability modes and nothing happend. i have tried to get the patches but i cannot find them so if someone could be so kind as to give me a link i would e very gratefull. i have updated my video drivers to the latest versions. i cannot find a driver for my sound card (i think it is an internal nforce sound card).
i have tried everything :banghead: AAAAAAAA!!!!!!
WHY ME! WHY IS IT SO HARD TO PLAY THE MOST FUN AND STRESS RELIEVING :rarr: GAME ON THE PLANET (apart from postal 2)
i even tried re-formatting my pc!!! but nothing happend!

Is that the 128 MB version or 256 MB version? WHat are your AGP and video memory settings in your BIOS set for? Is it in 4x or 8x mode? If you have your BIOS set for 8x, you may want to try backig it down to 4x.
both my sound card and my video card are on full acceleration but the crappy eagames customer support said that that wont make any difference.
I disagree. You may want to try backing the acceleration off one notch.
Also, what motherboard do you have, and are you running the lastest chipset drivers for it? And how much system RAM do you have?

This is a thread that does not want to die...... ;)
Well, I did some googling, and the answers came up....in German. Here is a translated version...kind of choppy:
The Setup has an error: If you delete the play file, the play cannot be installed any longer: It finds its entries in the registration data base and thinks, it would be already installed.
In order to create that remedy, you start the program REGEDIT (in Windows over starting/implementing). Look for for the key LionHead, and you delete all entries.
Change to it to the entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, university stable. Delete the key there { E51b4cd9-a0a6-4324-b2ã-31b3f2de26ce }. Now the NEW INSTALLATION is possible.
So basically, uninstall B&W, run Regedit, find any keys marked LionHead, and delete them. Then...I suspect that "university stable" actually should have been translated to "uninstall." So go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Uninstall, and look for a key that matches up to E51B4CD9-A0A6-4324-B26A-31B3F2DE26CE, and delete that.
Oh, and.....
***DISCLAIMER*** Using Regedit without adequate knowledge can seriously foul up your computer. Proceed with caution.
I have not tested this so I take no responsibility for the result, but the reasoning is sound. You are basically going to be wiping off the traces of the software that do not get uninstalled by the uninstaller.
Please come back and let me know if that worked.

I'm confused as to the advice you are giving. Which problem did you "cure" by uninstalling this Hotfix?
Secondly, from a security standpoint, I would not recommend uninstalling this Hotfix. It's there for a reason:
A vulnerability exists because the ListBox control and the ComboBox control both call a function, which is located in the User32.dll file, that contains a buffer overrun. The function does not correctly validate the parameters that are sent from a specially-crafted Windows message. Windows messages provide a way for interactive processes to react to user events (for example, keystrokes or mouse movements) and to communicate with other interactive processes. A security vulnerability exists because the function that provides the list of accessibility options to the user does not correctly validate Windows messages that are sent to it. One process in the interactive desktop could use a specific Windows message to cause the ListBox control or the ComboBox control to execute arbitrary code. Any program that implements the ListBox control or the ComboBox control could allow code to be executed at an elevated level of administrative credentials, as long as the program is running at an elevated level of privileges (for example, Utility Manager in Windows 2000). This could include third-party applications.
An attacker who had the ability to log on to a system interactively could run a program that could send a specially-crafted Windows message to any applications that have implemented the ListBox control or the ComboBox control, causing the application to take any action an attacker specified. This could give an attacker complete control over the system by using Utility Manager in Windows 2000.

Ahem...did you not notice that I asked very specifically about the 1.2 patch, not the 1.3?
The 1.3 has been known to not fix the problem. You MUST install the 1.2 patch first, then try it to see if it works, then you can try installing the 1.3 afterwards. Just installing the 1.3 may not fix your problem.

What are the specifications of your system?
///EDIT: Also, make sure you have read this page:

and check to see if you have installed the 327979 recommended update. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site, it will be under "Windows XP" updates.

HELP!!
I got B&W to run on Xp with the patch 1.2 but once it's started, I had to face a new problem! You have to enter your name and symbol, but whenever I hit a mouse button, the game shuts down and returns to the desktop!! The mouse movement seems to be fine, I just can't puch any buttons....
Does anybody have an idea?!?!
Thanks
I have the same problem, and the suggestions that were made earlier did not work for me and I didn't find anything on gamefaqs. If anyone knows how to fix this, or has seen something on gamefaqs that I might have missed, can you let me know? Thanks! :)

Apparently you did not read "all" the advice posted in this thread, because this question was asked and answered earlier in this thread:
http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=151665&postcount=48
Also, for stuff like this, there is a handy little feature in your Windows XP called "HELP & SUPPORT" which can tell you the answer to Windows XP questions like this pretty easily. Type in "Compatibility Mode" and it willl tell you how to do this.

This sounds very much like a problem I once had, and I learned that it had to do with a Windows XP Critical Update. I uninstalled that particular update and the game worked fine. I just wish I could remember which critical update causes the problem. I found out the answer (as well as the solution to correct the problem) though in the Planet Black and White forums, so you might want to try there. Good luck! Here is the URL to planet Black and White.

When you used a copy of a installed version the program cannot find the Registry setting.
OR
You use a different language version.
Search for a Registry patch maybe someware in this forum.
OR
first put the patch file in the B&W map en try again.

i am having major problems trying to get Black and white to run properly on XP Home. i installed it with no patches and it was running fine, no glitches or freezes. but when i tried to exit the game it made my entire PC restart. If i tried to go back to the game it would start right from the begining, not where i left off, i tried loding saved games but they were all screwed up.
After reading the advice on this forum i downloaded and installed the V1.2 patch and tried running it first in normal mode (i got exactly the same problem with exiting the game as before) and then in windows 98 compatability mode........which made the game just randomly crash and shut down after about 4 minutes of playing.
Anyone have any ideas for a fix? I've been searching through a few forums and no-one has mentioned any similar problems. I really want to play this game again.

Hmmm, I seem to have a different problem.
I tried downloading the 1.2 patch, but it claims that I "need to install Black and White before you can patch it."
I intalled with Class, could that have anything to do with it?
I did some other research, and the EA support site claims that I need to force the game to think that it should not connect to the internet.
Q. BLACK & WHITE IS CRASHING AT THE INITIAL 'TIPS OF THE DAY' SCREEN.
We have seen this crash occur on systems that try to connect to the Internet at the 'Tips of the Day' screen. To force Black & White into thinking that there is NO Internet connection you can do the following:
* Right click on the runBlack.exe file - the default location for this should be C:\Program Files\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White - and select the Create Shortcut option.
* Right click on the Shortcut to runBlack.exe file and select the Properties option.
* In the box labelled Target type in the following command at the end of the path description: /NOINETCONN
* Click the OK button at the bottom of the box and then double-click the Shortcut to runBlack.exe to run the game.
If this does not solve the problem try installing the latest videocard and soundcard drivers. These updated drivers are available from your card manufacturers' websites, the web addresses should be provided with the documentation that came with your video and sound cards or PC. For help with DirectX and information on how to update your DirectX video card and sound card drivers try our helpful Update Your Drivers guide at http://common.ea-europe.com/gens/drivers.htm.
Programs that run in the background can cause problems when starting or running Black & White. To close down these programs hold down the CTRL and ALT buttons together and press DELETE once, the CLOSE PROGRAM window appears. Highlight a program in the CLOSE PROGRAM window and click onto END TASK at the bottom of the window to close the currently highlighted program. Repeat this process for the other programs making sure that EXPLORER and SYSTRAY are the only programs left running.
However, there is no obvious way to change the "target type" of the shortcut, in XP. does anybody know a way?

Sorry for the late reply...but, you misread the instructions. Look at like this:
In the box labelled "Target"
type in the following command
at the end of the path description: /NOINETCONN
You are not looking for a "Target type." You need to TYPE in the box labelled "Target."

Same Problem Here. Followed in her same steps too.
AMD Athlon XP +2400
512 DDR
ATI Radeon 9700 128 MB DDR AND NVIDIA GeForce
in same box with ATI as primary display..........could two displays be a problem?
Anyway, mine doesn't even load the game, it just crashes back to desktop after splash screen. When it comes to uninstalling hotfixes, that is NOT recommended; and, even if i wanted to, i couldn't because it was part of SP2. In that case, i would have to reinstall windows xp fresh. Even then, it would have sp1 on it. Yes i have the Patch installed and everything..... Anyone with sp2 get this to run??? PLEASE help!!!! My little brother wants to play this game so bad.....otherwise, i would have left it in storage :p

First off i would like to say thankyou to you guys here who helped me make B&W work on Xp. O my 98, the screen would keep darkening and going black with dodgy colours etc.
Secondly, i would like to post a warning. Some of you suggeeted uninstalling hotfix kb824141. A while back i was trying to fix this problem nad did indeed attempt to uninstall it. The messages i got read something like this -
"File name could not be changed. Click browse to find it or ok to continue"
It was looking where it was, as i could see it, so i clicked ok after bwosing repeatedly.
"Warning, continuing setup may stop your computer from working if file name has not been removed properly"
I carried on for a bit, but everyfile it came across it wanted be to browse for (there were only 2, asked me twice for each). So i clicked cancel uninstall nd got this
"Warning, not continuing setup may stop your computer from working"
I had no choice, stopped it comp didnt reboot, 1 week later all gcse coursework lost we had to reformat hard drive to get windows back. Every1 else could get their data but i had a password on my user account- aaaaagh.
My advice- dont ever uninstall a hotfix
Evesham micro advie - only ever install security and hish priority hot fixes

I don't like bringing up old threads, but...
I have a particular problem regariding Black and White, and I've tried EA's tech support, GameFaqs, and Google searching frantically - which is actually what brought me here.
I can't even get Black and White to install. I've had this same problem every time I've tried to install Black and White, on different systems and with different CDs.
When installing, I get an error saying an installer bitmap in a temporary directory cannot be installed. Afterwards, the installation crashes and each time I try to repeat the installation, it does the same thing.
I've restarted, cleaned out the temp directory after each install attempt, ran the installation file under various different compatibility modes, closed all user processes besides Explorer and Task Manager, but nothing's working.
Anyone have an idea of how to help?

I updated to nvidia's latest drivers and used the shortcut in the sys tray to change the image settings to high perfromace and left everything else at the programs will. All the nasty lines caused in the begining and all frezzing ceased to exist. Problem solved.

'Lo all. I joined this forum specifically for a solution to this issue, as it seems that many people are enjoying playing B&W on their XP systems now, the members here seem to be knowledgable, and the thread is still relatively active.
I thank you in advance for your kind assistance.
So here's the problem:
My game system is a refurbished Compaq
900 Mhz Duron (@900mhz)
Uwave2 mobo (aka: FIC AZ-31)
Original system BIOS
512meg SDRAM
GeForce4 440 MX w/AGP8X (64meg DDR on card)
Nvidia driver 6.6.9.3
DirectX version 9.0c
Windows XP Pro (5.1, Build 2600) w/ SP2
The game core runs fine, I have no hangs nor spontanious kick-outs from the game. My problem is in the textures displayed in the game. I can't verbally describe the problem, so I will resort to screenshots to show you what I see.

As you can see, much of the landscape is blurred and blued out. Mountains tend to be transparent when you get too close to them. The ground disappears when close up on it.
As you can imagine, it's rather difficult to rain down terror on unsuspecting foes if I can't properly see my launch ramps...err...mountain ranges. Navigation is also rather difficult.
I have tried compatibility modes for both Win98, and Win2000
I have applied patches 1.1, and 1.2 both sequentially, and exclusively.
I have turned down all the resolution settings, draw distances, and graphics detail levels, to no avail. The flaw occurs under all the various settings.
My particular BIOS does not have advanced settings for the AGP speed, leading me to believe that only AGPX1 is applicable with this system.

sounds like i've got quite a different prob than most you guys experience....i'm trying to get the game to work on my laptop because i know it's an old school game and i always loved it. my problem is.... after the black and white splash screen loads..... my computer totally crashes (blue screen and everything) and the computer turns off before i can read the error message on the blue screen. i have tried all the B&W patches, compatibility modes of all OS's. i run the diagnostics from the CD and everything checks ok. i'm pretty sure i have at least directx 8 and i have played around with dxdiag.exe to make sure all the sound and video tests work. but nothing i seem to do gets rid of this stupid blue screen message that turns the computer off. any ideas?

Ok, I'm not really gifted in computers or whatever so forgive me asking dumb questions if that's what they come off on as.
Firstly I won't to mention that I have apparently the same graphics card that was already mentioned to conflict with running Black and White. I get the same exact graphic problems already mentioned.
First question, what does the hotfix 824141 do and how is it going to affect my system if I uninstall it?
Second, how do I run things in compatibility mode?
Thirdly, how do I run the game with 256 colors?
Any help is appreciated.

Had the same problems as some of you with Black and White on Windows XP.
Clicked icon, game would make it to the splash screen, then another window showed with "Options" on the menu bar and "Lionhead" on the title bar. Then it would disappear, and the game never started.
Someone was correct, the Black & White 1.20 patch fixes the problem (although not written to fix that problem) BUT you must be using Windows XP SP1 and the shortcut must be set for Windows 98 Compatibility mode.
If you use Windows XP SP2 as I do... Forget it the game will not run.

I found the answer. uninstall B&W and then reinstall it in a directory path that has NO spaces.
like:
C:\bnw
but not:
C:\Program Files\bnw
patches should then work

I've got the same problem. Game starts, but when loading screen apears it shuts down to desktop.
I reinstalled my pc yesterday. Before reïnstall I could play the game, but autosave caused it to crash and I had to use the task manager to close it. I couldn't even go to the second level.
I tried:

This is what I was about to post before:
I have a common problem without a common solution: The game crashes after the initial LIONHEAD window with the OPTIONS sub-menu on the menu
bar. I have tried the following (in correct order):
1) Installed V1.1 Patch
2) Installed V1.3 Patch after realising there was unofficial patches :p
3) Uninstalled V1.3 Patch - must have the P5 Glove for it to run!
4) Installed V1.2 Patch
5) Set to Windows 98 compatibility
6) Installed V1.3 Patch and P5dll.dll - but wait, it claims I have already installed this patch, even though I uninstalled it! Is this because it is
unofficial?
7) The TNT2 drivers have been downgraded, upgraded, regraded, supergraded, subgraded, nanograded, and all together screwed up (causing my
display to revert back to 640x480x4 [16 colour], and as a result, I now use an older driver)...
8) Restarted several times in between stuffing up drivers :p
I am running a PC with:
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition SP2
- nVidia RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro graphics card (don't laugh)
I know someone said earlier that if you have SP2, you're screwed. Hopefully this isn't the case.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Hopefully someone is still scanning this thread, as I realise the last post was a couple of weeks back.
Cheers to all who can help,
-- Yoctobyte
But, for some reason, the game now works like a charm, with the exception of a little lag! But I would still be interested on finding out why it works now, so, if anyone knows, I'd be grateful if they would tell!
The moral of the story is don't try to fix a problem after 2am, you'll only end up making it worse... unless you're incredibly lucky like I was today/yesterday
Well, at least I can rest easy now...

Look, guys, i joined here just for this.
here's my situation, as if you all havent heard this one already.
I just got B&W Deluxe from GameStop with (aparrently, from what i see in the readme) v1.40!
I install it fine, but i notice one thing:
Wheni get to the EAsy Info thing, that tells you your system stats, it shows my processor speed or something as a negative number
i ignored it, andi started installing the game.... la la la... ah, here! It starts CI, but as soon as it starts, it shuts down with the "send Error Report" popup  HELP :aol: my computer hates me!
EDIT: Wait, what's this P5 glove? i remeber reading about it in a readme.... Yeah, i run a WinXP with SP2, and have a NVidia GeForce FX 5200 with 6.14.10.4523 driver version (i'm pretty sure there is something better out... 77XX, or something) And i know B&W hates NVidia, but still Um, any other edits for me?...
EDIT: Ok, i went back to 1.2 (turns out i had 1.3, who'd've thunk it?), updated my graphics card, and said a million prayers. :screwed: i got it.... still nothing. same as before

Hi guys,
I've also joined the board for this very problem, and it seems a lot of useful help has been given out already.
I have the following system specs:
Athlon 3200+ @ 2.2GHz
ASUS Radeon 9800XT 258MB running Omega 2.5.76 drivers
1GB DDR400 Dual Channel RAM
On-board AC'97 Audio (Gigabyte GA-7N400-L mobo)
DirectX 9.0c
MS IntelliMouse 4.0
My copy of Black & White is fresh installed, then patched to v1.2. It's set to Windows 2000 compatibility, and runs fine - except the game lags while the mouse is moving. I stop the mouse, the game runs fine, till I move it again. My mouse is connected using the normal USB connector, and running the newest IntelliPoint drivers.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :)

Yea yea, u guys r gonna feel like idiots after i tell u this (I know I did when I first got patch v1.3) But that patch is NOT the patch that any of you want. The patch fixes problems just like v1.1, but it was specifically created to make your Black and White game compatable with the P5(check the patch README at http://www.3dgamers.com/dlselect/games/blackwhite/black_white_patch_v1.300.txt)
And if ur curious as to wtf a P5 is, check this out, http://www.videogamealliance.com/vga_catalog/product_detail.php/pid=91598~subid=4564/index.html
Yea, now don't u feel foolish? Oh, and if u don't know how to remove a patch, go here http://www.lionhead.com/bw/downloads.html and just download and execute the patch uninstaller. It should uninstall ALL B & W patches that you have on.

Check the requirment of the game in the diagnostics when it autoloads. It should tell u if you can play it or not.

you can add ram to them from the bios, i should know because i added 128mb of ram to the chip, thay ALL have bilt in ones, because if thay didnt you would not be able to see anything and when you buy a motherboard you dont get a graphics with them.and befor you start whining about "not all of them have chips":
1) have a look at all the motherboards you find ther will be a graphics chip
2) my dad works with comuters and EVERY motherboard i have seen has a graphics chip

Of course you're right...
Ok now, if that can help, I found a way to get rid of the graphic issues I had in B&W (blinking lines & streched/moving textures and so on)...I only had to disable the AGP fast write option on my motherboard, and now everything works fine.
If you don't know how to do this, just see your mother board's user guide or ask google... that's not that hard.
Don't worry, turning off this options should not affect your framerate in games a noticeable way...
Good game.

Video Drivers: (Original) NVIDIA N-Force drivers version 81.92
DirectX - 9.0c
The original problem I was having was the same that many of you have been complaining about. Choppy graphics, weird lines, video artifacts, both in cut scenes and in the game itself. I tried many of the solutions listed in this forum, and nothing worked. To give you all a quick overview, this is what I have tried so far:
1) uninstalling/reinstalling the game, including wiping out all directories and registry entries
2) running dxdiag tests, re-installing/upgrading directx
3) re-installing/updating VIA hyperion pro drivers, including the AGP driver
4) re-installing/updating AMD64 processor drivers
5) updating video drivers from nvidia.com
6) Disabling agp fast write in bios
7) using tweaked/altered versions of nvidia drivers (coolbits)
8) DOWNGRADING drivers to pre 77.xx versions (catastrophe - system would not VISUALLY boot in any mode, SAFE or otherwise - I was forced to install an old PCI video adapter to get back into it.)
After that last step, my system would not visually boot at all if the AGP vid card was installed. I had to have ONLY the pci video card installed if I wanted to get to a desktop. Uninstalling the downgraded Nvidia drivers had no effect. Attempts to install upgraded nvidia drivers resulted in the setup program telling me, of course, that it did not detect any nvidia products.
What was left to do except the most dreaded of options: The system repair routine using the original install CD.
OVERVIEW:
The XP pro software on my system was installed using a somewhat-dated corporate edition CD. Pre-SP1 edition.
The system was shut down to power off and I re-installed my GeForce card and set bios options for high performance (the way it was originally, 128mb paging, fast writes, and all). The system was powered on and allowed to boot from the CD, then completed the windows repair routine.
Immediately after the repair routine and restart, I was again able to get to a windows desktop. At that point I immediately ran the SP2 upgrade (windows xp SP2 standalone IT download) successfully (note: no internet connection, firewall, or antivirus software running while doing so).
After restart, I reconnected to the internet, went to windows update, and proceeded to download every update available, with the exception of the "newer" nvidia drivers provided by microsoft in their updated drivers section.
The next step was to update my sound drivers, which was easily done with a quick visit to www.creativelabs.com.
After all this was completed, I checked the drivers for the video card. They were simple, original Microsoft GeForce FX 5200 drivers. I tried Black & White. All video problems were gone. At that point I quit the game and set a system restore point, then went back to windowsupdate and downloaded and installed the newer Microsoft-sponsored Nvida driver and restarted the PC.
Again, the game worked. Flawlessly. This is WITH AGP fast write turned on, 128mb shared system memory, the whole bit.
Conclusion: If you are using a downloaded driver pack from NVIDIA, this is probably the nature of your problem. I would suggest the following steps in order to install the default microsoft drivers to get the game to work:
1) Set a system restore point!
2) Go to add/remove programs in the control panel and uninstall the nvidia driver pack that you currently have installed. At the END of the uninstallation, DO NOT allow the computer to restart. Tell it you will restart later.
3) Go to the device manager (in the control panel, double click the "system" icon, select the "Hardware" tab, click the "Device Manager" button). In the device manager, click the plus sign next to the line that reads "Display adapters". RIGHT CLICK the listed video adapter, and select "properties".
4) In the video adapter properties window, select the "Driver" tab, and press the "Update Driver" button.
5) This should bring up the Hardware Update wizard window. Select "No, not this time" in the options at the botton of that window, then click "Next".
6) On the next screen, select "Install from a list or a specfic location (Advanced)" and click next.
7) On the next screen, select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install"
, the click next.
8) The next screen that comes up should be the driver selection screen. Make sure that the "Show compatible hardware" option is checked. In the selection window below, look for a listing that reads "NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (Microsoft Corporation)". Select that listing, then click next. Allow the system to install the drivers, click "Finish", then close the video device properties window. At that point the system will want to restart. Let it.
When the system comes back up, it should come up normally and will have the default Microsoft version of the nvidia drivers installed. The game should run at this point. If you wish, you may go to windowsupdate.com and get the UPDATED Microsoft nvidia drivers....they seem to work just as well.
If you are dealing with a VIA chipset based system, you may also want to go to www.viaarena.com, drivers section, and download and install the latest via hyperion pro chipset drivers, as well as the USB 1.1 and 2.0 filter drivers. If you are fortunate enough to own an AMD64, you may also want to install/update the AMD64 processor driver, available from www.amd.com.
NOTE: The version of Black & White I have installed has been updated to version 1.2, and it is running successfully with NO compatibility options set.
Good luck everybody.

Several of you also having a problem with USB mice in the game? I also had this same problem. As one of the posts earlier mentioned, turning off pointer acceleration will help this issue. However, some people do not have that option, depending on which mouse they have. There should be another option though, called "enhance pointer precision". Turn this, and any other enabled pointer options (snap to, pointer trails, etc) off and the mouse should function normally within the game.

the side effect to this fix is that if you do this the game will run (with no artifacts) slower (on my comp it does, but at least its playable)
run dxdiag
goto [Display] tab
click the Disable next to AGP Texture Acceleration
PS: Make sure you reenable it before playing anything else

Hello; I've just registered recently after viewing the information on this thread. I have the same problem with Black and White on Windows XP. Basically I'll click on it, The logo will pop up, and then it will just disappear like nothing ever happened. So, I downloaded the Patch thing, v1.20 or whatever...I set the compatability to Windows 98, did the same with the B&W shortcut, and got ready to play, thinking that my troubles would be over...But of course, nothing happened.
Well, no, not true. I clicked the shortcut, and then this tiny, miniscule white box appears in the center of my screen. A moment passes and it disappears, then a moment passes and a box pops up on my screen for about seven seconds before disappearing.
That's it.
I am NOT smart with computers at ALL, I dont know my specs or anything, and all I know is that B&W worked when I didnt have XP...But now it wont.
Can anyone help me? I'm really hoping to get this working soon, but I havent been successful in any of my attempts.
And I've read all of the pages, but if I missed a few posts with some information, please dont yell at me ^^; I'm human.

I have a problem with my game as well. I installed it on my windows XP and the game runs great without any problems... that is, until the text at the bottom begins to appear while someone is talking. The text can not be read because it is very choppy and does not make any sense. Then when I try and leave the game or go to the options menu all of the text on the menu is messed up as well.
I used to play the game on my windows 98 and I never had this problem. Only now after I installed it on my XP. And I have uninstalled and reinstalled many times.
I cannot find the solution to the problem anywhere. Please help.

Hi, I just recently pulled the game back out and intalled on my XP system, I've got the same problem as this...When it autosaves or manual save this happens! I have current drivers and patch v1.20. but still to my frustration!
It's really bugging me and would much much appreciate if anybody has remedied this??
Cheers,
Daz.
Same problem for me as above one. Does anyone have exact problem or maybe someone fixed it and want to share his experience?
I never got any problems with graphics or so in B&W. I started playing game on patch 1.20. I also doubt if there is any need to change compatibility or remove any hotfix, cause I was playing this game for many hours without any problem. And then, just like it, game started to crashing when I tried to save it. No matter automatic or manually. Any ideas what to do?

Ok, I am also having issues with Black & White (gee what a surprise, right?), and I have looked through the topic and so far have not been able to find this question from someone else. If I just missed it, tell me which post to look at if you don't mind please.
Black & White works perfectly fine most of the time, but occasionally after about 5-10 minutes of play it will do the messed up graphics thing where objects dissapear and textures are stretched all over the place. This only happens, I would say about 1 out of every 3-4 times I try and play.
Also, if I minimize the game, even for a second, it will go into the same messed up graphics mode when I restore the game. This happens every time I minimize the game...
I have really been looking hard and trying as many options as I can, but so far no luck.

Wow that would suck, but I do not think it is that because I play a lot of games on my computer and I end up minimizing a lot and no other game does this. Most of my games have newer graphics, but thats the only main difference that I can think of.
Plus I just got my computer less than 6 months ago, so I hope it isnt having problems already...

Well... I really do hate posting in old threads, but I REALLY wanna play B&W =(.
This is the problem: I run runblack.exe ... Black screen for at least 20 seconds.. Black and white logo for not even 1 second (it flashes). Black screen again.
In the first cinematic (with all those dots..balls..whatever) i can see some lines bothering all around..
Cinematic. LINES EVERYWHERE OMFG... , psicodelic colours everywhere..
Uhmm. I tryied to update but my runblack.exe is so damn cracked that i can't update because of that. I have already tryied with the compatibility tricks but nothing.
My PC:
Windows XP Home edition
nVidia GeForce4 MX 4000

I took the effort to register to say...
SCREW THIS! This game sucks! I can't believe how much these guys at EA and Lionhead suck. They're useless pricks. This POS game lags and jerks on my PC, whereas Half Life 2 will run at maxed out resolution very smoothly. Not only that, It looks horrible, I can't play it 1600 x 1200. I have to turn on EVERY compatibility option and put it to 98/ME to make it work.
I can play B&W2, which I don't think is as fun and it looks better and runs fine. Wtf? I'll save you all the time, either buy an old cheapy PC to play old junk games like this on, buy B&W2, or don't play any B&W games, they're not that awesome. I've spent 3 hours trying to figure out how to make this game work, and if my P4 3 GHz, MSI 6600 GT, 1 GB of memory, and all my other good components can't play this, it's a waste.
You know, a lot of you may have problems because you're cheap asses and don't buy some damn new graphics cards! God, who still uses a FX or even Geforce 1-4 card? Buy at least a 6x Nvidia or a 9x ATI. God you people are cheap! If you're trying to make an old school gaming rig, that may be fine but this game is on the fine line between old junk (leaning towards junk) and too new for an old pc.

Anytime you have to disable Fastwrites, it is an indicator of an incompatibility between the Videocard and the Mainboard, VIA and SiS boards are well known to have issues with Geforce cards and usually need this.
Ok, heres how to get it running.
1. Download and install the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit, this installs a large library of automated game fixes, that are activated upon program launch.
The Application Compatibility Toolkit from Microsoft. It will automatically apply fixes to hundreds of programs to enable them to run under XP. You can find it in the \Support\Tools directory of the XP CD, though a much better bet is to download it from www . microsoft . com/windows/appcompatibility/default.mspx because newer versions are always being made available online.2. make sure the disk is unscratched, the protection on these disks is a total ass to get past when the disk is scratched and will cause crashes at start.
3. Install the 1.2 or 1.3 patch, it doesn't matter whether you have the G5 or not, 1.3 still has compatibility fixes over 1.2.
4. Set to Windows 2000 compatibility mode, or NT4 SP5 compatibility mode.
5. Adjust black and white to use the same Resolution as the desktop, or the desktop to that of black and white.
6. in the compatibility tab, disable theming services, this will help somewhat.
i have played Black and white on my 5900XT without crashes using Forceware 70+, i also have the forementioned hotfix's installed and they do not cause me issues.
if black and white is unreasonably slow, disable the AGP Texture acceleration (only necessary on newer drivers)

Hey all. So like most others I have B&W (deluxe)and win XP. I cannot get it to work so i found my way here, although i was already guessing that i needed a patch. Ive downloaded the v1.2 patch for B&W but when I try to open it for septup it says it has encountered a problem and needs to close. I assumed that it was because the file was corrupt, but i have downloaded the same patch from three different locations and all of them do the same. I even tried running the patch on a different machine and it still does the same thing, so any assistance that anyone can give me would be appreciated.

Ive tried compatibilty, but... no go. I have a zipped copy of the file as well as an unzipped, both aquired from different locations. When I try to open the zipped copy winrar diagnostics says, "unexpected end of archive" "the archive is either in unknown format or damaged" and then "Cannot execute C:\documen~1\hp_adm~1\locals~1\temp\rar$ex00.579\black_and_white_patch_v1_20.exe"

~first one that come up says:
"A required .DLL file, DINPUT.DLL, was not found"
~after you click ok it goes to this error
"The application or DLL C:\windows\system32\DINPUT.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."
i have tried running the patch no effect, and i have changed the compatibility mode and i get the same erors everytime. please HELP i miss my BW :(

and let me guess, you haven't thought to download dinput.dll from one of the many DLL download sites and place it in windows\system32.
though it should be there anyway, so the fact it isn't is worrying.
